I decided to write an article about the best shoes for girls with flat feet since I have been contacted by several parents that were dealing with this issue. The shoes described in this article provide arch and ankle support, and they are available in medium, wide and extra wide widths.
I have been fitting children’s shoes and orthotics for ten years at a premier specialty children’s shoe store, a leader in proper fit for over forty years. We specialize in fitting children with foot and leg problems as well as provide regular shoe fittings for all children, whatever their needs are.
In this article you will find out which are the best best everyday shoes for girls with flat feet.
Below you can find a conversation between myself and a father who had a daughter dealing with foot and leg pain due to having flat feet, and her pain went away as soon as she tried the pair of shoes I recommended.
UPDATE: These are the current most effective shoes for girls with flat feet:
I am located in Jordan [Middle East] and my daughter is 3 years and 8 months. I am reaching out to you because she is suffering from foot and leg pain due to having flat feet. I was told that one foot is 95% flat and the other is 100% flat with noticeable pronation.
Since she has been putting pressure in parts of her feet where she is not supposed to, she has developed bunions in both of her feet.
The problem I have is that the place I took her to have her feet evaluated only had 1 shoe style that will work for her feet. My daughter is very selective and stubborn, and I would like to know if you could provide me with other options (maybe sneakers and boots).
My daughter’s shoe size is 11 1/2 and she needs a wide or an extra wide width shoe (this is what I was told by the person who measured her feet).
I appreciate your kind assistance.
I have helped several girls with flat feet find the correct pair of shoes that minimized and in certain cases fully eliminated the pain they were experiencing.
I will help you, but your daughter needs to be flexible because there are only certain shoe styles that provide good arch and ankle support. I will send you a link of the shoes that will work for her feet, but there will not be more than 3 to 5 options.
There are certain requirements that the shoes for your daughter need to provide in order to minimize the pain that she has been experiencing:
- Arch Support: this will help cushion your girl’ feet and prevent them from collapsing and turn in as she walks or runs. A shoe with arch support will also help your daughter to walk and run straighter, and also prevent her from putting pressure in parts of her feet and legs where she is not supposed to.
- Ankle Support: a shoe that provides ankle support will cushion and protect your girl’s ankles and provide lateral stability and ankle support.
- Wide Toe Box: this will prevent her bunions from rubbing against the side of the shoes.
- Depth: this will allow your daughter’s feet to sit deeply inside the shoes and prevent the top part of her feet or the bunions to rub against the shoe. This feature will also allow you to fit an orthotic inside your daughter’s shoes in case you have to for extra support.
Are you looking for a pair of boots or a pair of sneakers? I recommend that she wears a pair of sneakers since they provide more support than boots.
I think we should focus on minimizing or fully eliminating her foot and leg pain first, and then we can worry about providing your daughter with a pair of seasonal shoes.
Here is an example of shoes that are supportive, durable, and are available in wide and extra wide widths:
1st Option: New Balance With Support (choose the correct shoe width “W”, or “XW”)
2nd Option: New Balance With Support (choose the correct shoe width “W”, or “XW”)
3rd Option: Geox With Support (only available in regular width but the shoe fits wide).
If she needs a pair of boots here are the most supportive ones (please have her wear sneakers most of the time).
I understand that your daughter is picky about her shoes, but we need to go for what fits and for what provides good support.
I hope this helps and let me know if you have any other questions.
Thank you so much!
I would like to ask you before I order the shoes:
1- The person who measured my daughter’s feet recommended a wide or an extra wide shoe, is New Balance the only shoe brand that makes wide or extra wide shoes that will work for my daughter?
2- Do you have any solution for the bunion?
3- The local doctor told me that she must wear the shoes at least 6 hours a day and when she is not wearing them, she must not walk barefoot. Actually, I believe it is difficult to have her wear the shoes for such a long time specially since she has no school yet. Don’t you think she will benefit it if she only wears it for one or two hours a day?
4- Do you recommend me to provide her with a pair of sandals also?
1- New Balance is not the only shoe brand that makes wide and extra wide shoes, Saucony and Stride Rite make them as well. However, New Balance makes the deepest shoes with the roundest toe boxes (that is the main reason why I recommend New Balance shoe styles). She needs a wider width shoe in order for the bunion not too rub against the shoes ( I will recommend that you start with the “wide” and if the shoes feel too tight or if you see pressure around the area where her bunion is then order the ” extra wide”).
2- The most cost-effective solution to bunions is wearing shoes that fit properly and don’t put pressure on them. Once she is older you can think about considering surgery. In the meantime, by providing your daughter with the correct pair of shoes, the pain from her hammer toes will be greatly reduced and, in some cases, fully eliminated.
3- I strongly recommend that she wears her shoes most of the time (even more than 6 hours a day, the more she wears them the better), but she can also alternate with a pair of sandals or boots.
4- Here are the sandal options:
I hope this clarifies!
Thank you for all your help. I ordered the New Balance shoes and the Merrell sandals and I will get back at you and let you know how they worked for my daughter.
My daughter is so happy with her New Balance shoes that she wants to wear them all the time. She doesn’t complain about foot or leg pain anymore, and I know this is because of the shoes she is wearing. I also noticed the she is walking and running straighter, and the doctor told me that she doesn’t seem to need an orthotic for now (since the shoes have made such a big difference).
I really appreciate all the time you took to help me find the perfect pair of shoes for her.
She also is wearing her sandals and boots and never complains about them. I have noticed that you have written several articles on children’s shoes, but my question is: How can I search for specific ones? I wanted to see if you had any articles about soccer shoes for girls with wide feet.
Can you please help me find the article or recommend a good pair of soccer cleats (they must be wide or extra wide for my daughter’s bunions)?
Thank you Juan.
I am glad that the shoes worked out for your daughter’s feet. The most important thing is that she is not experiencing any foot or leg pain anymore. Please keep a close eye on her feet and keep asking her how her shoes feel.
