How to Measure Your Kids’ Foot – 2 Simple Steps to Determine Foot Length and Foot Width

Parents across the country are increasingly ordering their children’s shoes online—unfortunately, without the benefit of proper shoe fittings—because most specialty children’s shoe stores nationally are closing their doors. Big retail stores such as Nordstrom’s, Payless, or Footlocker don’t provide adequate child shoe fittings, causing many children to wear footwear that is the wrong size. Let me show you how to measure your kids’ foot from home.

I developed the most effective way to determine your child’s exact foot size from your home and will personally assist you with a custom fitting tailored to your child’s individual needs. This easy-to-follow method allows parents to accurately determine:

  • Correct length, width (narrow, medium, wide, or extra wide), and instep height
  • Identify possible foot conditions such as flat feet or misaligned heels

1️⃣ Step 1: Measuring Your Child’s Exact Foot Length

  • Make sure that your child is standing straight, and then place a measuring tape or ruler below your child’s heels. You must measure your child’s feet while standing, as on weight-bearing the foot becomes longer.
  • Measure both feet up to the tip of your child’s longest toe (make sure that your child is not curling his/her toes). You must measure both feet since there is always one foot that is bigger than the other. Keep in mind that your child’s longest toe doesn’t necessarily have to be the big toe — it may in fact be the second or even the third toe.
  • Make a note of that measurement in centimeters or inches or email me the image showing the measurements (such as you see below) to avoid confusion with the measurements.

2️⃣ Step 2: Pictures of Your Child’s Foot Width

The pictures below will help me determine whether your child has narrow, medium, wide, or extra wide feet.  Also, the pictures will help me see whether your child has a high instep and additional information such as whether your child has flat feet or not. Below you can find examples of how the pictures should look like:

Please note that I won’t need the measurements of your child’s foot width, the images will be sufficient to help me determine whether your child has narrow, medium, wide, or extra wide feet.

➡️ Recap – What to Include in Your Email

  • Your child’s foot length measurements (or an image of their foot length measurements)
  • Three images of your child’s feet (see example images above)
  • The country you live in case you need specific shoe recommendations

Feel free to include in your email any additional information I should know about your child’s feet:

You will then receive a response within 24 hours with your child’s exact foot length, shape, and specific shoe recommendations as needed.

How Much Does This Service Cost?

This service is completely free. I am passionate about fitting children’s shoes as I truly believe that the correct type of shoes can be life changing. Children’s feet are constantly developing, and what happens to their feet during their childhood will affect their physique as they grow older.

If you wish to support the work of Fitting Children’s Shoes, you can Donate Here Your support helps ensure that families around the world can find the correct shoes for their children, regardless of their foot shape or condition.

How Do I Retrieve Your Child’s Exact Foot Length and Foot Shape?

I will input your child’s foot length measurements in the Brannock device to accurately determine your child’s exact foot length. The Brannock device is the standard foot measuring tool, and the most effective tool on the market right now.

I understand that not all families can afford to invest $50 in a foot measuring device. To support families who may not have this device, I offer my personal assistance in applying my method which involves 2 simple steps.

The main downside of the Brannock Device is that it won’t retrieve your child’s exact foot width (narrow, medium, wide, extra wide) and whether your child has a high instep or not. This is something that comes with experience.

There have been several inventions and online tools that claim to provide you with the most accurate foot size. Please don’t waste any money on those tools. These tools are ineffective because they are not able to capture two key factors that determine the final foot size: instep and width.

  6. Hi JP,

I have incredibly flat feet. Knowing that this is hereditary my 5 yr old son too has flat feet . Is there anyway to revert this or increase a natural arch over time because of his young age ?

    • Hi Audray,

If your son doesn’t develop an arch by the time he reaches six years old then it’s highly likely that he will remain flat footed for the rest of his life.

Please note that having flat feet is common and no treatment is necessary unless the child starts complaining about foot or leg pain. if your son starts complaining about foot or leg pain I suggest that you make sure your son is wearing supportive shoes at all times. Depending on the degree of your son’s flat feet you might also have to consider fitting an orthotic inside your son’s shoes.

The correct type of shoes and the orthotics won’t mold your son an arch, but they will help improve your son’s walking gait and overall posture.

Keep in touch and let me know if you have any other questions.

      • Thank you so much for providing this service! Our fav local Childrens shoe store that did the measuring for us shut down and I have no idea how to properly size my kids for shoes, particularly my oldest who has low tone, toe walks and is flat footed. He normally wears AFOs with special shoes but I tried to figure out shoe size for him myself for water shoes when we went on a little vacation and he has blisters all over his feet from them now. I’ll be getting the measurements and pics tomorrow to send.

      • Hi Juan , its has been 2-3 years since I first wrote you and my son is now 8 with completely flat feet ( as does his father ) . He does not complain of any pain or discomfort but i would like your suggestion for easy to find best shoes for flat feet . I have read many articles but have a hard time finding the recommendations.
What are your suggestions for us in Canada ( Montreal) ?

Ps. I just ordered the Asics gel venture 8 and have read about but can never find the New Balance 997h V1.

        Thank you in advance ,

          • Hi JP,
I sent you the pics. I always have trouble determining how much space or size up a shoe should be give that the shape is not flat at tip . And is it 12 mm or less ?

          • Hello Audray,

I received your email and responded. However, you didn’t provide me with your son’s foot measurements. They need to be either in centimeters or inches, and you need to measure from the back of his heels to the end of the longest toe.

  7. Hi Juan, thank you so much for offering this service for free. I order my kids’ shoes online all the time, and the shoes are always too small or too big resulting in me having to return the shoes. This is a waste of my time and money.

I just sent you both of my son’s measurements so I am looking forward to your response.H

I will be sharing this with friends and family as well as in my social media channels.

  8. I haven’t been able to walk into shoe store in these times so your service came at the perfect time. I already received your response with my son’s measurements and wanted to thank you for offering this amazing service to parents. I didn’t know he had a high instep, which makes perfect sense as we always struggled getting his shoes on and off. Thank you Juan!

  9. Hi Juan. I just sent you my daughter’s foot measurements. Can you believe we took her to 3 different shoe stores and they all measured her at different sizes? One store told me she has narrow feet and the other one told me she has wide feet! How is this possible?

    • I always respond back between 24 hours so you will get my response soon. I am not sure how that happened to your daughter but if you followed the instructions on my article I will be able to tell you whether your daughter has narrow or wide feet, as well as her exact foot length.

Thank you! My goal is to make sure that no children suffers from foot or leg pain from wearing the wrong type of shoes.

  11. Hi Juan,

My grandson always used to kick off his shoes until we got him a pair of the extra wide shoes you recommended. He loves his shoes and he refuses to take them off. That new Balance shoe is the only shoe he will wear, for now we are glad that we found something that works. Many thanks keep up the good work.

    • Hi Pete,

I am glad to hear that the shoes worked out for your grandson’s feet. I suggest that you periodically check the shoes and make sure his toes are not rubbing against the side of the shoes.

  12. Hi Juan. I received your shoe size recommendations for both my daughter’s feet and they were right on point. We were finally able to find a pair of comfortable boots that they like. We were able to accomplish this because you told us they have both extra wide feet. Forever grateful for your service!

  13. Hello there! I’ve always had an issue with buying the correct sizes of shoes for my 2 kids, even when I took them to our local shoe store. I feel like most salesmen don’t have the patience to deal with my kids so I started buying their kids’ shoes online and you article has been super duper helpful! Many thanks!!!!

  14. You are offering an excellent service.

Like you, I think children’s shoes need to fit properly. My mother insisted we were measured for shoes and I did the same with my children and grandchildren. Poorly fitting shoes can damage feet, especially those of a growing child.

Here in the UK we can still get a child’s feet measured, though it has to be by appointment now.

I am sure a lot of families are grateful that you offer this service for free.

    • Hi Linda,

I hope things are well in the UK. Happy to help and let me know if you ever need help fitting your grandchildren’s shoes.

  15. Hi Juan. I don’t know how many times I ordered shoes online and had to return them because they were either too big or too small. I just received your response and apparently my son has wide feet with a very high instep which is probably the reason why none of the shoes were fitting correctly. I just wanted to reach out and thank you for your help.

  16. I am amazed you are offering this service for free. I was looking at your website and noticed that every time you recommend a specific shoe you tell us how it fits which is extremely helpful. Determining the accurate shoe size for children can be challenging as some brands may be big or small.

This is great stuff I will be sharing it with friends and family.

  17. Hi Juan – Thanks so much for offering this service free of charge – it’s highly appreciated. I have just emailed you the information you requested. Do you also provide recommendations on which shoes to wear based on the results? I always have trouble finding the correct shoes for my kids! Thanks again for all your help – I find your website extremely valuable and I visit it frequently.

  22. Good morning Juan Pablo, thank you for offering this service. I sent you an email yesterday afternoon with my son’s measurements. I’ve been having a tough time trying to find him the right soccer shoes, he always has trouble putting them on, at the store they keep telling me he doesn’t have wide feet. But I noticed he’s developed calluses around his big toes and small ones and also has redness on back of his foot therefore my assumption is he possibly might have wide feet and a high instep but I’m not an expert. Also he’s developed a corn on the sole of his right foot, not sure if its the soccer shoes or the constant playing of soccer. Thank you in advance for your assistance, please confirm you received my email I would greatly appreciated.

    • Hello Gino,

I received your email and I just responded. Keep in mind that I respond to emails in the order that I receive them. I can confirm that your son has wide feet, a high arch, and a high instep. You will find all of the details in my response.

  23. Good morning Juan, may I ask if you can help my son please? He is 7 years old, wight 21kg, has knock knees and flat feet. His feet measured at 8.5 inches long and 3.5 inches wide. Can you help me find shoes and sandals please? He is currently receiving physical therapy for weak hip…

    • Hello Christine,

I am happy to recommend specific shoes for your son, but first I need to know from which country you are contacting me to check what shoes are available in your area. In addition, I can’t tell by the width measurements whether your child has narrow, medium, wide, or extra wide feet. If you are unsure of your son’s foot shape please send the images requested in this article.

  24. Thank you so so so much for offering your expertise! I can’t tell you how overjoyed I was to find your website. Can I share pictures for both of them with you in case you’re still helping families? I’ve never been to a children’s shoe store and suspect I might be getting the wrong type of shoes (and size) especially for my 3 year old son.

  27. Hi Juan, I have done a disservice to my son. Instead of getting the best fit, I purchased the most popular brands. I noticed the over pronation this year and started doing research. Please help. USA
