Keen Sandals for Boys – The Most Supportive and Durable Summer Sandal for Your Boy!

Have you been looking for a pair of Keen sandals for your child? Are you having trouble deciding which Keen style provides better support and durability? Keen sandals are the most supportive and durable sandals for kids, but among this shoe brand, certain styles provide more support and fit better than others. In this resource, I have put together a list of the best Keen sandals for boys that can fit different foot shapes (narrow, medium, wide, and extra wide).

Keen sandals are the most popular type of sandals that kids wear to summer camp, go to the beach, ride their bicycles, or any other type of activity that requires them to be active. Two particular features that parents love about Keen sandals are the good amount of support that they provide and how they are practically indestructible, which guarantees that their children will outgrow the sandals before they wear them out.

Depending on your boy’s foot shape certain Keen sandals will fit better than others. For example, if you have a boy with wide or extra wide feet, there is only one Keen sandal style that will fit the shape of your child’s feet. The same applies if you have a boy with narrow feet.

The good news is that I will be able to show you which style will fit your boy’s feet depending on your child’s unique foot shape.

My Experience Fitting Children’s Shoes – Over a Decade of Shoe Fitting Experience!

I have been working for a specialized children’s shoe store for over 10 years now that focuses in fitting children with “complex” foot shapes as well as foot and leg problems, but we provide regular shoe fittings as well.

Most physical and occupational therapists recommend Keen sandals for children with foot conditions because of the excellent internal support mechanism that the sandals provide.

What Makes Keen Sandals the Best Summer Sandals for Boys?

Parents love how supportive, durable and comfortable these sandals are for their kids. The footbed of Keen sandals provides an internal support mechanism that is anatomically engineered to provide excellent arch support and cradle the natural contours of the foot.

You can rest assured that Keen sandals can take anything your child can dish out. Let’s take a look at the 5 most important features that these sandals will provide to your child’s feet:

1️⃣ Substantial Outsoles: This feature help support your kids’ feet and minimizes the impact that your kids’ feet and legs take every time they come in contact with the ground.

2️⃣ Adjustable Hook-and-Loop Strap: This feature allows children to easily put the sandals on and take them off by themselves.

3️⃣ Traction: This feature helps prevent the likelihood of your child from slipping and falling, especially when walking or running around wet surfaces.

4️⃣ Quick-Drying Webbing: This feature prevents your child’s feet from being wet for most of the day, and it will allow the sandals to quickly dry once your child is done playing in the water.

5️⃣ Machine Washable: The styles that I recommended are all machine washable. Use a small amount of detergent, wash on a gentle cycle and air dry.

These sandals are built for all-day play or afternoon exploration, and they provide the support, comfort and flexibility that developing feet need!

What Size to Order? – Let’s Find Out!

Keen sandals are not available in half sizes; they are available in whole sizes only. This factor will also play a key role in which size you will end up ordering for your child.

To allow for growing room, I highly recommend that parents order these sandals half a size larger than their child’s current foot size. This translates to 3/16 of an inch or 0.4 centimeters of space between your child’s longest toe and the end of the sandals.

Let’s take a look at a couple of different scenarios that will help you identify which sandal size to order for your child.

  • If your child measures a foot size 5, you will order the size 6 and your child will still get the correct amount of growing room.
  • If your child measures a foot size 5 ½, you will order the size 6 and your child will get the correct amount of growing room.

Makes sense?

If you are unaware of your child’s foot size, you won’t be able to order the correct sandal size online. This brings me to this next question: Are you 100% sure of your child’s foot size?

I always recommend parents take their children to their local fitting children’s shoe store that they trust, the issue is that most fitting stores have been closing down and parents need to end up buying their kids’ shoes online. There is nothing wrong with this, but you must know your child’s exact foot size to know what size to order.

Do You Have a Good Fitting Children’s Shoe Store in Your Area?

I created a resource that showcases the best fitting children’s shoe stores by state:

How to Retrieve Your Child’s Exact Foot Length and Shape

If after looking at that resource you still can’t seem to identify a shoe store in your area, then proceed to take a look at an article I created that describes the simplest, yet most effective way to figure out your child’s foot size from home:

How to Measure Your Kids’ Foot – 2 Simple Steps to Determine Foot Length and Foot Width

In that article I help parents determine their child’s exact foot size and whether the child has narrow, medium, wide, or extra wide feet. I also will be able to tell you whether your child has a high instep or not.

Are Your Kids’ Keen Sandals Starting to Smell?

Several parents have contacted me asking why Keen sandals start smelling so bad after their children wear them for a couple of months. Keep in mind that most sandals that your child wears during the summer will start developing a smell. Unfortunately, there are no special products in the market right now that can help get rid of the smell, so don’t waste any money on products thinking that they will help.

However, there is a home-based method you should try that has worked well for many families. This home-based method is used with baking soda and vinegar, and you will notice how the smell will be greatly reduced or fully eliminated. Please make sure you rub it throughout the sandal, especially in the neoprene part.

I have found that this is the most effective way to get rid of the smell.

Now that all Keen sandals are machine washable parents have not been complaining about the sandals smelling bad.

Some parents are on their feet all day and need comfortable and supportive summer shoes. I have fitted several moms and dads that bring their kids to the shoe store in Keen sandals, and once they try them on they love how comfortable they are.

Did you know that if you wear a women’s shoe size 8 (or below) you can get the kid’s version (shoe size 6) and you will end up paying half of the price? You will get the same amount of support and comfort for half of the price.

Pretty awesome, right?

While I can’t get into too much detail about how this shoe size conversion works, I wrote another article where I explain how this shoe size conversion works. Go to the link below:

2 Comments on Keen Sandals for Boys – The Most Supportive and Durable Summer Sandal for Your Boy!

  1. A lot of brands have similar styles of sandal, like the Pediped Canyon and Sahara or the Stride Rite Jayden. Merrell also has a few styles. Thoughts on these? Is any sandal of this style a good choice if it fits well?

Additionally, what are your thoughts on shoes like the Stride Rite Phibian or Merrell Hydro 2.0 “sneaker sandals”?

    • Hello Brynn,

The Pediped Canyon is a great sandal in terms of support but it doesn’t provide the same stability as Keen sandals do. Notice how thet don’t come with a toggle lace to hug your kids’feet. The same applies to the shoe style that you mentioned made by Stride Rite. To answer your questions they are great sandal styles but Keen sandals are more versatile in the sense that they provide the same support but more stability for when your kids’are running and playing around.

The Stride Rite Phibian doesn’t provide good support, it is pretty similiar to wearing a pair of Crocs.

      I hope this helps!
