There is one particular shoe style made by the shoe company Merrell that is one of the most versatile children’s shoes that I have fitted for children.
This shoe style is supportive, lightweight, flexible, durable, and it provides great traction. This shoe style s made from high quality materials and is practically indestructible.
The Merrell Jungle Moc is a slip-on-shoe that will keep your children’s feet warm and dry. This shoe style also provides great traction, which will minimize the likelihood of your child from slipping and falling down, especially when walking on wet surfaces.
This type of shoe is mostly used as a school shoe, but depending on how fancy the occasion is, it might be also be worn as a dress shoe.
Children love the simplicity of sliding into and out of these shoes. I particularly recommend this shoe style because of the excellent quality that the shoe is made of and how it is practically indestructible. Another advantage of this shoe style is how it will fit a child with wide and extra wide feet.
I have been working for a specialized children’s shoe store for over 10 years now, and I know everything that relates to children’s shoes and the way they fit. This is a specialized shoe store that focuses on children with foot and leg problems, but we provide regular shoe fittings as well. We carry some of the most supportive children’s shoes and orthotics, and I am familiar with which shoe brands and which shoe styles are better than others.
The main reason why I recommend this shoe style is because it’s lightweight (the svelte 1 pound 6 ounce weight makes these shoes feel like walking on air), immensely comfortable (the time-tested footbed also adds to the comfort), and they work for almost every occasion, making them one of the most versatile children’s shoes.
Parents always feel frustrated when their children wear down their shoes before they are ready to be replaced. Some children are so rough on their shoes that they will destroy them before they grow out of them. I always explain to parents that since children grow so fast (they might outgrow their shoes anywhere between 4 to 6 months), they should aways outgrow their shoes before they wear them down.
The good news is that the Merrell Jungle Moc is basically an indestructible shoe. I will show you this shoe style shortly, but first I want to describe what features this shoe style will provide for your child and how to figure out your child’s foot size from home.
Merrell Shoes for Kids – The 5 Most Important Features!
Your cild will want to wear this shoe style all the time. These are the 5 most important features that this shoe style will provide to your child’s feet:
- Support: This shoe style comes with a substantial sole to minimize the impact that your kids’ feet take every time they come in contact with the ground.
- Firm Heel Counter: This feature will provide ankle support to your kids’ feet.A firm heel counter absorbs shock and adds stability.
- Traction: This shoe style provides excellent traction that will minimize the chances of your child from slipping and falling down.
- Waterproof: This feature will keep your kids’ feet dry and warm. The waterproof suede upper with M-Select DRY sealing provides dryness and comfort. This feature will become very handy for those rainy days school days.
- Durable: This shoe style is practically indestructible. It provides a rubber sole and a rubber toe-box at the front of the shoe that will hold up even if your children like to drag their feet as they walk. The waterproof pigskin upper gives the shoes good durability in varied weather conditions.
Let’s face it, you probably don’t want your child to wear wet shoes and socks, since this can create a myriad of problems.
There is one thing you need to keep in mind, if you don’t provide your children with the correct size, they won’t get any of the benefits that the shoes have to offer.
This is why I always recommend parents to take their children to their local children’s shoe store that they trust, the issue is that most stores have been closing down and parents need to end up buying their kids’ shoes online. There is nothing wrong with this, but you must know your child’s exact foot size in order to know what size to order.
I created a map that showcases the best fitting children’s shoe stores by state, so I suggest you start by taking a look at that map:
If after looking at that map you still can’t seem to identify a shoe store in your area, then proceed to taking a look at an article along with a video I created that describes the simplest, yet most effective way to figure out your child’s foot size from home:
Is This Shoe Style Going to Fit a Wide or Extra Wide Foot? – Let’s Find Out!
Yes, these shoe styles will fit a child with wide or extra wide feet. This shoe style is very deep, which will prevent the top part of your kids’ feet (the instep) from rubbing against the top part of the shoes. It also comes with a round toe-box to prevent your kids’ toes from overlapping against each other or rubbing against the side of the shoes.
A child with a narrow foot will have the hardest time fitting in this slip-on Merrell. The issue is that this shoe style doesn’t come with a Velcro strap to hold your child’s feet in place, and if your children have narrow feet, their feet might end up coming up and down the shoes. However, in order to prevent this from happening, you can insert a tongue pad inside the shoes. A tongue pad will push your kids’ heels back, supporting and securing them against the back of the shoe.
I describe how to fit tongue pads in shoes in a different article. If you have a child with narrow feet or a child that is complaining about the shoe moving up and down too much, you should insert a tongue pad inside the shoes.Go to the link below:

This shoe style fits “true to size”, which means that you need a half a size longer of the size that your child measures in the shoe measuring scale in order to allow for growing room.
Please note that this version of the shoe is not waterproof. This style looks very similar to the one I showed you above, but it’s missing the waterproof label. In order for your kids’ Merrell shoes to be waterproof they need to come with the waterproof logo. Take a look at the image below for clarification:
If you do not have the waterproof version of the Merrell shoes, read this post where I describe how to make shoes waterproof:
What Makes This Shoe Style so Special? – It’s Versatility!
I can assure you that the structure, support and overall quality of this shoe is excellent. I have a co-worker who wears the adult version of the shoes and told me how they are the most comfortable shoes that she has ever worn. In addition to that, she was experiencing foot and leg pain, which was significantly reduced after wearing these shoes. These shoes are the perfect combination of cushioning, comfort, stability and support.
Keep in mind that this endorsement came from a person who is working on her feet for 10 hours a day. The best part is that she was able to get the kid’s version of the shoes and ended up paying half of the price that she would have paid for the adult version of the shoes.
Did you know that if you are a women’s shoe size 8 1/2 or below you can wear the kids version of the shoes? I am talking about the same quality and same amount of support, but for half of the price. I created a chart that shows you how this shoe size conversion works:
I also wrote an article where I describe how this shoe size conversion works in more detail. Go to the link below:
