Are you having a hard time finding shoes for your child that has the middle toe longer than the other toes? Do you feel like you try a whole bunch of different shoes but you always end up empty-handed?Having the middle toe longer than the other toes can lead to your child developing blisters on his/her middle toe, and finding a pair of shoes to accommodate the middle toe can be a frustrating and time-consuming experience.

My Experience Fitting Children’s Shoes – Over a Decade of Shoe Fitting Experience!

I have been working for a specialized children’s shoe store for over 10 years where we focus on helping children with “complicated” foot shapes as well as foot and leg problems, but we provide regular shoe fittings as well. We carry some of the most supportive children’s shoes and orthotics, and I am familiar with which shoe brands and which shoe styles are better than others.

Most Common Mistakes Parents Make

There are 2 common mistakes that I see parents make when trying to accommodate the shape of their child’s middle toe:

❌ The first one is to buy larger shoes to prevent the middle toe from rubbing against the front part of the shoe.

❌ The second one is to assume that a shoe that is labeled as extra wide (XW) will automatically prevent the toe from rubbing against the front part of the shoe.

Your Kids’ Shoes Must Provide These 2 Key Features

1️⃣ Extra Depth: This feature allows the child’s feet to fit deeply inside the shoes and prevent the middle toe from rubbing against the top front part of the shoes. Let me show you the difference between a shoe that provides extra depth versus one that doesn’t. Do you notice how the shoe on the right is a lot deeper than the shoe on the left?

2️⃣ Rounder Toe-Boxes: This feature prevents the child’s toes from overlapping one another or rubbing against the side of the shoes Take a look at the image below to visualize the difference between a shoe with a rounder toe-box versus one with a pointier toe-box. These shoes are the same length and width. Do you notice how the New Balance shoe (right image) has a much rounder toe-box compared to the Saucony one (left image)?

Parents are often confused as to how they are supposed to find shoes that provide those two features as shoes don’t come labeled as “extra deep” or with “rounder toe-boxes”. The good news is that I know exactly which styles provide those 2 features and I will help you find them.

In addition to providing extra depth, your kids’ shoes must also be supportive, lightweight, durable, and breathable. Now that you know what features your kids’ shoes must provide I will show you a selection of the best shoes for children that have their middle toe longer than the big toe.

I only write reviews of shoe styles that I have fitted before, otherwise, I wouldn’t know how well-made they are, the amount of support that they provide, and how they fit. Disclosure: Keep in mind that we may receive commissions when you click our links and make purchases.

Are You 100% Sure of Your Child’s Foot Size? – Let’s Find Out!

I want you to remember one thing, it doesn’t matter how many features a particular shoe style has to provide to your child’s feet, if the shoes are not the correct size, your child won’t get any of the benefits that the shoes have to offer. What’s even worse, you will end up creating several foot issues such as blisters, calluses, and corns.

I always recommend parents take their children to their local fitting children’s shoe store that they trust, the issue is that most fitting stores have been closing down and parents need to end up buying their kids’ shoes online. There is nothing wrong with this, but you must know your child’s exact foot size to know what size to order.

I created a resource that showcases the best-fitting children’s shoe stores by state:

How to Retrieve Your Child’s Exact Foot Length and Shape

If after looking at that resource you still can’t seem to identify a shoe store in your area, then proceed to take a look at an article I created that describes the simplest, yet most effective way to figure out your child’s foot size from home:

How to Measure Your Kids’ Foot – 2 Simple Steps to Determine Foot Length and Foot Width

In that article I help parents determine their child’s exact foot size and whether the child has narrow, medium, wide, or extra wide feet. I also will be able to tell you whether your child has a high instep or not.

Socks also play a key role in keeping your children’s feet comfortable, especially if they have their middle toe longer than the other toes.

The Best  Kids’ Socks – Seamless and Breathable!

Socks act as a barrier between your kids’ feet and the shoes, preventing the formation and buildup of bacteria inside the shoes. In addition, there is a particular type of sock  that helps prevent your kids’  toes from overlapping or rubbing against one another. Have you ever heard of seamless socks?

These types of socks are great because they won’t constrict toe movement and allow your kids’ toes to freely move. These are the type of socks I recommend for children who have wide or extra wide feet and they are also great for those children that feel every lump and bump.

While I can’t get into too much detail about the importance of seamless socks in this post, I provide a description of the best seamless socks for children in another article. Go to the link below:

  1. Please, can you suggest shoes (or someone who could suggest a source) for adults with a longest third toe? I’m not a little kid any more, though I can still wear girl’s 5 1/2, that may not be an option in the future. Wide shoes don’t work: they’re generally too loose, and the slope from the big toe to the little to is still too steep to accommodate my long middle toe. I can wear shoes a size or so larger, but I tend to stumble in them, because of the excess length. I see men’s shoes that have a reasonbly square to, but usually, they’re not an option, either; they never come in sizes that are small enough for my feet.
