Do you have a child who wears orthotics and only wants to wear shoes from specific shoe brands such as Nike, Adidas, or Under Armour? Are you hesitant of providing your child with these “popular shoes” as they might not provide the correct amount of support? I have found a few popular shoes for kids with flat feet made by Nike, Adidas, and Under Armour that provide good support, and I will show you these shoes shortly.
The older children get, the more aware they become about fashion trends and they start having strong opinions about footwear choice. Some children refuse to wear shoes picked by their parents, and will only wear the ones that they like. This can become a problem if your child is dealing with a specific foot condition and needs extra support from the shoes.
My Experience Fitting Children’s Shoes
I have been working for a specialized children’s shoe store for the last 10 years, where we focus on helping children with foot conditions such as flat feet, rolled ankles, overpronation as well as “complicated” foot shapes.
I have fitted many children for their first pair of walking shoes up to their teenage years. The older children get, the pickier that they become about shoes.

Some children walk into the store with their minds already set about what shoes they want to get. I always try to balance style with function, as it’s important that children wear the shoes that they like without compromising foot health.
I have noticed that many children would say that the shoes hurt their feet when they don’t like how the shoes look.
My Child Only Wants to Wear Popular Shoes!
Have you looked at any of the Nike, Adidas, or Under Armour commercials? There is a large number of athletes who wear their products, and if you go to any shoe store you will notice that the amount of display space devoted to these shoe brands is so much larger than the space for any other shoe brand.
What Popular Shoes Work Well for Kids with Flat Feet?
There are certain shoes made by Nike, Adidas, and Under Armour that balance style and function by providing supportive outsoles and firm heel counters. Some of these shoes we carry at the shoe store that I work for, while some others I found by doing extensive research online.
For example, the shoe below is made by Nike and older children love it because it’s named after Lebron James. While this shoe is not my number one choice for children with flat feet, it provides certain features that make it appropriate as long as your child has mild to moderate pronation. Below is a picture of how the shoe looks like. I like the fact that the shoe provides a substantial outsole with a reinforced heel counter and Max Air under the heel area to support and protect your child’s heels:

There is a shoe brand that might not be as popular for older children (New Balance) but manufactures a shoe that has been quite popular among older children. The shoe is named after the basketball player Kawhi Leonard, so several children like this style. Below is a picture of how the shoe looks like. I like this specific style because it provides a full-length outsole shank for added stability:

Where Can You Find Popular Shoes that Provide Good Support?
You can visit your local fitting shoe store or buy them online. If you prefer to shop online you need to be 100% sure of your child’s foot shape and length. Your child’s foot shape (narrow, medium, wide, extra wide, high instep) will also determine what specific shoes your child should wear.
If you are unsure of your child’s shoe size I suggest that you take a look at a resource I created where I help parents retrieve their child’s exact foot length and shape online:

What Makes the Shoes that I Recommend Ideal for Children with Flat Feet?
All of the shoes that I recommended provide supportive outsoles and firm heel counters. Even though these shoes provide really good support, there are other shoes manufactured by other shoe brands that might not be as fashionable or popular but provide better support.
I created a different resource that provides a list of the best shoes for kids with flat feet, so I suggest that you also show your child those shoes to check if they like them, as they will be more supportive than the ones recommended above:

The Importance of Properly Lacing Your Kids’ Shoes
I strongly suggest that you make sure that your kids’ shoes are properly tied at all times. The reason I mention this is that a lot of children walk around with untied shoelaces or lace their shoes in a specific way that doesn’t really “hug” their feet. Your child won’t get the full support or stability from the shoes if they are not properly laced:
The tighter the shoelaces are, the more support and stability that your child will get from the shoes. I also suggest that you apply the following shoe lacing technique:
