Have you ever taken your kids to be fitted for shoes at big retailers such as Nordstrom, Stride Rite (most stores have closed down), or Payless? We often help children that come to our store wearing the wrong shoe sizes after being fitted in those stores.
I have been working for an independent specialized children’s shoe store for over 10 years now, and we specialize in children with foot and leg problems, but we provide regular shoe fitting as well.
I am trying to raise awareness among parents since most children that are fitted for shoes at these big retailers end up wearing the wrong shoe size. The salespeople who work there are not properly trained to fit shoes. Most of the shoe brands that they carry are NOT even available in different widths such as medium, wide, or extra wide.
Wearing the wrong shoe size or the wrong shoe style can lead to several foot issues such as blisters, calluses, or corns, as well as foot and leg pain.
Keeping your kids’ feet and legs is important, and by investing in the correct type of shoes you will end up saving a lot of time and money in the future. The next time you need to buy shoes for your kids, do it in a place that you trust!
At the store I work at, I have helped many parents who bring their children to complaining about foot or leg pain find the perfect pair of shoes.
For the last 3 years, I have been helping parents who don’t have a children’s shoe store in their area find their kids’ shoes online.
I can’t tell you the amount of children that come to the store wearing the wrong pair of shoes or the wrong shoe size. It is hard for me to believe that someone would fit a child (who more often than not, can’t speak up when they are in discomfort) in a pair of shoes that don’t fit, just to make a sale.
The level of irresponsibility from these shoe stores is so unbelievable that I felt obligated to reach out to parents and let them know to that they need to STOP taking their kids’ to be fitted for shoes at those retail stores!
I always recommend that parents take their kids’ to be fitted for shoes at their local children’s shoe store. However, a number of parents have contacted me asking me where they can get their kids’ shoes online since they don’t have a shoe store in their area that they trust.
Start by taking a look at a map I created where I showcase the best fitting children’s shoe stores by state:
If you still can’t seem to find a shoe store in your area then proceed to taking a look at an article I wrote where I describe the simplest, yet most effective way to figure out your child’s foot size from home:
Avoid Shopping for Shoes at Big Retailers – Here’s Why!
Most children who were fitting for shoes at big retailers came to the store wearing shoes that were either too big, too small, too narrow, or too wide… Not surprisingly, they were never the right size!
Let me tell you about a particular situation which was extremely upsetting to me:
I was assisting a mother and her 18 month old child who came wearing an arch support (piece of rubber that is fitted inside the shoe) that they purchased from Stride Rite. The mother explained to me that the physical therapist recommended an extra arch support to be fitted inside the shoes so that the child could walk better, but after fitting the arch support in the shoes, the child simply refused to walk.
Once I proceeded to take the kids’ shoes off to measure her feet and evaluate her feet, I found out that the arch support that they put inside the shoes was way too big. The mother was so upset when she saw the size of the arch support. An arch support is supposed to fit below the arch of the foot, not behind the entire kids’ foot. And this is just one of many examples. We experienced several issues from children who came wearing shoes from Stride Rite (it’s not a surprise to me that most of their shoes stores have closed down).
Children’s feet are constantly developing, and we MUST fit them in the correct pair of shoes in order to keep their feet, legs, and back healthy. Like I mentioned to you before, making sure that your child is wearing the correct shoe size will save you a lot of money in the future since you will keep his feet, legs, and back healthy.
Has your Child Developed Any of The Foot Issues Mentioned Below?
Not wearing the correct shoe size can lead to several foot, leg, and back problems such as:
- Foot Pain.
- Lower back pain.
- Knee pain.
- Ankle pain.
- Ingrown Toenails.
If your kids have developed any of these foot issues, start by checking the shoes that they are wearing.
Something so simple such as providing your child with the correct type of shoes will prevent all of these foot and leg issues and makes sure that your child’s feet develop properly.
I believe that the customers who come to the children’s shoe store that I work for appreciate seeing the familiar faces of the staff. Receiving help from someone they already trust gives them a peace of mind. You will end up saving a lot of money in the long run if you are taking care of your kids’s feet properly from a young age.
If you don’t have a local kids’ shoe store and you must purchase your kids’ shoes online, I will tell you which is the best online shoe retailer to purchase your kids’ shoes from.
The Best Place to Buy your Kids’ Shoes Online – Amazon or Zappos?
There are several online retailers that offer kids’ shoes but 2 of the most popular ones that you have probably already heard of are Amazon and Zappos.
Both of these online retailers offer a great selection of children’s shoes that are provide great support and are available in different widths. I always recommend parents to shop for their kids on Amazon because the prices for the shoes are more affordable than Zappos.
I explain why you should purchase your kids’ shoes on Amazon in more detail in this article:
The Best Kids’ Shoes That I Have Fitted Before ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
While I can’t help you find the correct shoe size for your kids without looking at their feet, I can provide you with a selection of the best fitting children’s shoe styles that I have fitted before. These are styles that come in different widths such as medium, wide, and extra wide and provide great support and durability.
Below you can find a selection of the best fitting children’s shoes.
The shoes below will fit a child that has narrow, medium, or wide feet (choose the width accordingly).
This first selection of shoes fit “short”, which means that you need to go a whole size longer of the size that your child measures in the standard foot measuring scale (Brannock device) in order to allow for growing room.
The shoes below will fit a child with medium, wide, or extra wide feet.
This selection of shoes fit “true to size”, which means that you need to go a half a size longer of the size that your child measures in the shoe measuring scale in order to allow for growing room.
These are the best fitting shoes for kids’ that I have fitted before in terms of support, quality, durability.
I have helped hundreds of children who have had foot, knee, leg, and lower back pain by fitting them in the right pair of shoes. After wearing the correct shoes for a period of 3 to 5 months, their pain was significantly reduced and in some cases it fully disappeared.
Don’t forget to provide your child with the correct pair of socks. Did you know that getting the correct sock size is just as important as getting the correct shoe size?
A sock that is too small will cramp your kids’ toes and won’t allow their toes to move freely. However, socks that are too big will bunch up and feel uncomfortable.
While I can’t get into too much detail about which are the best socks for children in this article, I wrote a post where I describe the best kids’ socks and you can find it here:
