The Best Place To Find Kids' Shoes
That Fit For Any Foot Problem

The Cheapest Kids Shoes – What Is The Price You Will Pay For Keeping Your Kids’ Feet Healthy?

Cheap Kids Shoes

Are you looking for a pair of affordable and supportive shoes for your child? Do you feel like your children always wear down their shoes before they are ready to outgrow them?

Buying shoes for children who will outgrow their shoes every 3 to 4 months can get expensive. Are you finding it hard to justify spending 40 dollars or more in a pair of shoes that your child might outgrow in less than 4 months?

Parents are always trying to economize when it comes to buying their children’s shoes, and it’s understandable since they have to replace them so often. However,  one common mistake I see parents make is buying bigger shoes for their kids hoping that their kids will be able to wear them longer. By providing your child with shoes that are too long you will end up compromising your child’s stability and creating all sort of foot problems which will end up costing you so much more money in the long run.

It is a fact that what may be considered “cheap” for one person may be “expensive” for another. In my opinion, a pair of cheap, yet high quality shoes will cost around 40 dollars. To some parents this might sound like more money than they want to pay for their kids’ shoes, but remember, shoes still need to provide good support to your kids’ feet.

If you are spending less than 40 dollars in your kids’ shoes, that’s great, but make sure they are supportive and well-made. If the shoes are not supportive enough or they are not made from good quality materials, it will lead to foot and leg pain. If you think about it, if you are spending 40 dollars for each pair of shoes, and your child is outgrowing the shoes every 4 months, that means that you are spending a total of 120 dollars a year to keeping your kids’ feet and legs healthy.

I have been working for a children’s shoe store for 10 years now, and I know everything that relates to children’s shoes and the way they fit. This is a specialized shoe store where we focus in children with foot issues, but we provide regular shoe fittings as well.

There are certain shoe styles that I have fitted before that are affordable and made from high quality materials at the same time.

But before I show you a selection of the most affordable shoes for kids that are also supportive and well-made, I want to clarify a couple points:

  • Your kids’ shoes wont last a whole year, or even six months (maybe older kids’ can get away with wearing their shoes for 6 months). Most children will outgrow their shoes between 4 to 5 months (depending on their age). The reason why I am telling you this is because I helped a family the other day who came to the store complaining that their kids’ shoes didn’t hold up as expected after being worn for an entire  year.

Take a look at the picture of the shoes that the child was still wearing when he came to the store.

Wore Down Shoes

The Worst Shoes For Kids

We can’t blame the quality of the shoes in this particular case, since the child wore the shoes for so long that even the sturdiest shoes will have fallen apart. I was shocked that the family allowed  this child to walk around with the shoes looking like that. Normally children will outgrow their shoes before they wear them down, but if your kids’ shoes look like this, please replace them even if your child still has growing room left.

  • I have spoken to certain parents who have told me how their kids keep outgrowing their shoes every 2 months. I find that hard to believe, and that’s probably happening because they are not fitting their kids’ shoes properly (leaving the correct amount of growing room) to being with. Even if you have a toddler at home, his/her shoes should last 3 1/2 to  4 months. If your toddler’s shoes are falling apart before they are ready to outgrow them, then the shoes you are buying for them are made from poor quality materials. Remember that your kids should always outgrow their shoes before they wear them out.
  • More expensive shoes don’t automatically translate into better shoes for your child. Buying cheaper shoes for your child doesn’t mean that you need to compromise on the quality or the support of the shoes.  I have fitted several kids’ shoe styles that are affordable and provide the same amount of support as some of the more expensive ones. Most importantly, they are available in different widths such as medium, wide, and extra wide.

I will provide you with a selection of the cheapest kids’ shoes that are made of high quality materials and  that also provide great support for your children to wear them as their every day sneakers.

Happy Kids

Places you Need to Avoid – Stop Buying Shoes at Target or Walmart!

I always advice to parents to stop buying their kids’ shoes at superstores like Target or Walmart. Yes, you will see some of the cheapest kids’ shoe styles in there, but they will end up falling apart so much faster than expected. I have helped several children that have come wearing shoes from those stores and some of them were literally made out of cardboard!

I have heard several stories from parents of how the tongue of the shoes fell out, or how the whole sole of the shoe came apart…

I understand how tempting it is to spend 20 dollars or less on a pair of kids’ shoes, especially when they are outgrowing them so fast. But in reality, you are only creating foot problems for your child that will end up costing you so much more in the future.

I am not saying that you have to spend a fortune on your kids’ shoes, and being economical is a part of everyone’s life, regardless of  income bracket. But if you can’t invest 40 dollars every 4 months into your kids’ feet and risk hurting foot development in order to “economize”, that becomes false economy!

I wrote an article where I describe in more detail why you must avoid getting your kids’ shoes in those places. Please go to the link below:

Cheap but Durable Shoes for Kids – Learn About the Best Styles!

There are many parents who come to the shoe store telling me that they don’t care about how the shoe looks like, as long as they fit the shape of their kids’ feet perfectly and the shoes fall under a certain price range. I appreciate when parents tell me this, because it makes the whole shopping experience so much easier. I bring out the shoes in the price range that they are comfortable with, and I also select shoes that will provide good support and structure for their kids’ feet.

One shoe company that makes great shoes for kids’ at very affordable prices is Saucony. They make high quality and supportive shoes for kids in different widths such as medium, wide, and extra wide. When a family asks me to find their child a pair of good quality, yet affordable shoes, I tend fit that child with a pair of Saucony shoes. You might even recognize this brand from wearing their shoes yourself.

There is an article I wrote where I describe the best shoe brands for kids. If you want to learn which are the best 5 shoe brands for kids go to the link below:

I always recommend that parents  have their kids’ shoes fitted at a local children’s shoe store that they trust. NEVER shy away from telling the shoe fitter that you want your kids’ shoes to fall under a certain price range! The shoe fitter will actually appreciate this since you will make the whole process of finding shoes for your child much easier!

Please keep in mind that I only write reviews of shoe styles that I have fitted before, otherwise I wouldn’t know how well-made they are, the amount of support that they provide, and how they fit.

Amazon offers the best prices by far when it comes to children’s shoes. You might even find some of the styles I describe below between the 25 to 35 dollar range.

Below you can find a selection of the cheapest and more supportive shoes for your kids. These shoe styles will fit a child that has medium, wide, or extra wide feet (s long as you choose the shoe width accordingly).

This first selection of shoes fit “short”, which means that you need to go a whole size longer of the size that your child measures in the shoe measuring scale in order to allow for growing room.

The first two styles from the left made by Saucony are called the “Baby Ride 10”. I am providing you with the latest version of the shoes, but you might find the “Baby Ride 9” or the “Baby Ride 6” for a much lower price.

The great thing about the shoe styles that I describe above is not only how affordable they are, but also how supportive, lightweight, flexible, breathable, and durable they are.

If you decide to buy cheaper shoes for your child, you will find yourself buying multiple pairs in a season. Remember that in the long run, you will end up saving a lot of money by investing in higher quality shoes.

I usually get a parent that asks me how our feet survived before all the supportive, better-made shoes came around? I believe that the advances in medicine and technology have lead us to live better, healthier lifestyles.

If you have ever experienced back or leg pain, your doctor will start by checking the shoes you are wearing. I have experienced foot and leg pain myself, and wearing the right type of shoes has helped reduce and eliminate the pain tremendously.

It must be noted that expensive shoes don’t automatically translate into better shoes for your child’s feet.

  1. Hello,

I am looking for shoes my niece, what would you recommend for a 4 year old little girl? She does play hard all day long non-stop, she plays with her brothers so you can imagine how hard she is on her shoes! I saw your recommendations but which shoe style will you recommend for her that’s durable and affordable?

    • The Saucony baby ride is the style that you probably want for your child. It provides great everyday support, it’s durable, and it’s available in medium, wide, and extra wide widths. I can guarantee you that you won’t find another kid shoe for that price with the support and quality of the Saucoy baby ride.

  2. Great article!!!

I am a mom of two and I am always trying to get the perfect shoes for my kids. Our feet support our bodies every day and children who are growing and developing really need good shoes, to support their growing body, develop properly, and play hard!

I wish all parents understood the importance of taking care of their children’s feet. The worst mistake is buying second hand shoes for children. People need to realize that everyone’s foot pattern is different, unique like a fingerprint. Used shoes do more damage because now there is different wear on the shoes that can actually cause damage to the spine! All for what? to save ten to twent dollars? Buy proper shoes and make your life easier down the road but more importantly make your child’s life easier! Thank you Juan Pablo!

    • I agree with you! Taking care of our kids feet properly by providing them with the correct pair of shoes it’s important to keep their feet and legs healthy! I always explain to parents the consequences of providing their children with hand-me-down shoes. I actually wrote a post where I explain this into more detail: Second Hand Shoes For Kids – Stop Hurting Your Child’s Feet

I know how we are always trying to economize, but compromising our kids’ feet and legs health for saving 10 to 20 dollars is false economy.

  3. I usually purchase shoes from Walmart all the time due to costs and I am guilty of buying the shoe bigger so they can last. What are the long term damages of wearing cheap shoes? Is it cheaper to buy kids shoes online? Which website offers kids shoes for the cheapest prices?

    • Hello Krissy,

Cheaper shoes don’y automatically translate into low quality shoes. I have fitted some reasonable priced shoes that offer great support and structure, and they are made of good quality. However, if you are paying less than 20 dollars for your kids shoes, then the shoe is probably made of low quality. Amazon offers the best prices when it comes to kids shoes.

  4. Informative article. I usually would purchase shoes from Walmart all the time due to costs and I am guilty of buying the shoe bigger so that they can last. What are the long term damages of wearing cheap shoes?

    • There is nothing wrong about providing our kids’ with cheaper shoes as long s they are supportive enough! There is a certain amount of growing room you can leave for your child to grow into the shoe, but if you are leaving extra room then you can create all sort of foot problems such as blisters, calluses, corns, and you will be compromising his or her stability!
STOP leaving too much extra growing room! I created a post where I describe how to make sure your child is wearing the correct shoe size: How Can I Make Sure My Kids’ Shoes Fit? – Learn The Secret Here!

  5. I am a father of four kids and I spend a lot on my kids shoes. My oldest is very picky and will only wear Nike or Jordans. But my other three kids are not as picky. I used to buy shoes from Walmart and it was a waste of my time and money! The shoes fell apart fast and gave my kids blisters! I am NEVER buying my kids shoes from there ever again.

    • Felix,

When children reach a certain age they start asking for particular brands or fashion oriented shoes. It is important to never compromise on the fit or support of the shoes, but still try to make your kids happy.

Stay away from low quality made shoes, since they will end up creating several foot problems to your kids feet that will end up costing you so much more!

  6. I don’t usually go for low cost shoes because I do understand that shoes is one of the most important things for our comfort. However, when I had my daughter I realised that it wouldn’t be the case most of the time because of how fast they grow. So I tried as much as I can to scout online for trusted brands at reasonable prices. Yes Target comes in really cheap and sometimes you’ll get good finds. But I would always end up buying through amazon.

    • Hello Cherie,

Amazon offers good, quality shoes for kids. It is important to provide our kids with good quality, supportive shoes to keep their feet and legs healthy!

I always recommend parents to take their kids to be properly fitted for shoes at their local fitting shoe store. However, Target, Wallmart, Payless… etc are not fitting stores, so they don’t know how to fit shoes and they offer low quality shoes that end up wearing out so much faster than expected.
