What are the Best Shoes for Kids with Wide Feet?

best-shoes-for-kids-with-wide-feet

Children with wide feet need to wear shoes that fit the shape of their feet properly, otherwise, they might refuse to wear the shoes or develop foot issues such as blisters, calluses, corns, and ingrown toenails, among other issues.

I have noticed that many children have wide feet, but luckily, there are some great kids’ shoes that are available in wide (W) and extra wide widths (XW) that are both stylish and comfortable.

I have helped several children with wide feet find the perfect pair of shoes for their feet, and I believe I can help your child as well.

My Experience Fitting Children’s Shoes

I work for a specialized children’s shoe store that focuses on helping children with “complicated” foot shapes (such as wide or extra wide), but we provide regular shoe fittings as well. I have been fitting children’s shoes for the last 10 years, and I handle approximately one hundred shoe fittings/try ons per week.

Nowadays I dedicate myself to helping families from all over the world find the perfect pair of shoes for their children online.

Do they Make Wide Kid Shoes?

Yes, there are children’s shoes that are specifically made for wide feet as they are available in wide (W) or extra wide (XW) widths.

Most Common Mistake Parents Make when Buying their Kids’ Shoes

I have noticed that a lot of families get the next size up to help alleviate the width issue. It is a fact that children’s feet grow fast and families try to get the most out of the shoes, but buying bigger shoes might compromise your child’s stability and make your child more prone to falling.

Shoes that are too big can also allow for too much foot movement inside the shoes, and that constant friction and rubbing between the feet and the shoes might lead to foot issues.

Does Your Child Have a High Instep as Well?

Some children in addition to having wide feet have high insteps. Do you know what the instep of the foot is? The instep is the top part of the foot, and when it’s high, it makes it a lot more challenging to find shoes that fit.

Take a look at the image below to better visualize where the instep of the foot is located. As you can see, when children have high insteps there is a lot of extra foot volume that needs to be fitted inside the shoes.

If you are having a hard time finding shoes for your child’s wide feet, you’ve come to the right place.  I will provide you with a list of the best shoes for kids with wide feet, and I will show you this list shortly. But first, I want to show you what features your kids’ shoes must provide to accommodate a wider foot.

What Makes the Shoes I Recommend Ideal for Kids with Wide Feet?

I usually look for shoes that provide 3 key features:

Round Toe Boxes: This feature helps prevent your child’s toes from overlapping against one another or rubbing against the side of the shoes. Let me show you the difference between two shoes that are the same size in length and width. Do you notice how the shoe on the right (New Balance) has a rounded toe-box compared to the shoe on the left (Nike)?

Extra Depth: This feature helps prevent the top part of your child’s feet (instep) from rubbing against the top part of the shoes. Shoes with extra depth also allow for easy on and off, which is a great feature if you always feel like you struggle to get your child’s shoes on and off.

Available in Wide (W) and Extra Wide (XW) Widths: All of the shoes that I recommend are available either in wide or extra wide widths. Buying a pair of shoes that are made specifically wide or extra wide will keep children’s feet healthy and comfortable.

  • Tsukihoshi
  • See Kai Rrun

Keep in mind that this doesn’t mean that all of the shoes from those brands will accommodate the shape of your child’s wide feet. There are certain styles among each shoe brand that work a lot better than others, and I will show them to you shortly.

What Shoe Size Should You Order?

To allow for growing room, I highly recommend that parents order these shoes half a size larger than their child’s current foot size. This translates to 3/16 of an inch or 0.4 centimeters of space between your child’s longest toe and the end of the shoes.

Do These Shoes Provide the Correct Amount of Support and Flexibility?

All of the shoes that I recommend are breathable, lightweight, flexible, and supportive at the same time. The shoes provide the correct amount of flexibility as they flex at the ball of the foot but no further. If you can flex your kids’ shoes like a spiral, then it’s likely that the shoes don’t provide the correct amount of support. Take a look at the image below for better visualization purposes:

You will notice that all of the shoes that I recommend open up widely to allow for easy on and off, which is an amazing feature to have specially if your child has a high instep.

What are Good Socks for Kids with Wide Feet?

Socks play a key role in healthy foot development, as big of a rule as the shoes themselves. If your child has wide or extra wide feet and often faces issues in finding comfortable socks to wear, then consider purchasing a pair of socks that will fit your children’s wide feet.

The Final Fitting

I understand that it can be frustrating and time-consuming to find the perfect shoes for your child’s wide feet.

Most families are not aware that there are shoes available in wide and extra wide widths for children with wide feet. In addition, finding shoes that provide extra depth and rounded toe-boxes will help increase the chances of the shoes fitting your child’s feet and keeping them healthy at the same time.

Never buy bigger shoes to accommodate the shape of your child’s wide feet, as this will end up creating foot issues. I have created several resources that will help you figure out exactly what shoe size you need to order online.
