There is a very small selection of shoes that are capable of accommodating AFOs, as the shoes need to provide extra depth, rounded toe-boxes, and it’s very likely that they will have to be available in extra wide widths (X-Wide) as well.

My Experience Helping Children Who Wear AFOs Find the Correct Types of Shoes

I have been fitting children’s shoes and orthotics for the last 10 years, working for a specialized children’s shoe store that focuses in helping children with foot and leg problems. ➡️ New Balance: I found one shoe style by New Balance that is available in extra wide widths and capable of accommodating AFOs.

There are other shoe brands that manufacture shoes that work well with AFOs, but none of them manufacture an all white shoe just yet.

What Makes the White Shoes that I Recommend Ideal for AFOs?

There are 3 key features that the white shoes that I recommend provide that make them ideal for accommodating AFOs:

1️⃣ Extra Depth: This feature allows the child’s AFO to fit deeply inside the shoes. The deeper the AFO sits inside the shoes, the more comfortable your child will feel. Shoes that provide extra depth can drastically increase your child’s comfort and prevent your child from getting the impression that his/her feet are coming out of the shoes.

2️⃣ Round Toe-Boxes: This feature helps prevent the front part of the AFO footplate from destroying the front part of the shoes.

3️⃣ Wider Opening for Easy On & Off: This feature allows parents to easily slide the AFO inside the shoes so they don’t have to struggle every time they have to put on the AFOs.
