Wide Soccer Cleats for Kids – The Best Wide and Extra Wide Soccer Cleats for Children!

Wide Soccer Cleats

Do you have a child with wide or extra wide feet that likes to play soccer and you are having a hard time finding a pair of soccer shoes that fit?

Most parents don’t know that soccer cleats for children with wide or extra wide feet actually exist. There are actually only 2 soccer shoes capable of fitting children with wide or extra wide feet, but the good news is that I will help you find them. These 2 shoe styles are also capable of fitting children with high insteps.

I have been working for a specialized children’s shoe store for the last 10 years, where we specialize in children with foot and leg problems, but we provide regular shoe fittings as well. It’s important for us to carry top quality shoes that are available in different widths, as that’s the only way we can guarantee to fit every single child. Over the years I became familiar with the best shoes for children with wide feet.

If you provide your child with a pair of cleats that are too narrow, you might end up creating all sort of foot issues to your child’s feet such as blisters, calluses, and corns.

What Makes the Soccer Shoes I Recommend Effective for Wide Feet?

✅ Extra Depth: This feature allows the child’s feet to fit deeply inside the shoes and prevent the top part of the foot (instep), from rubbing against the top part of the shoes.

✅ Round Toe Box: This feature prevents the child’s toes from overlapping or rubbing against one another.

Take a look at the image to visualize the difference between a soccer shoe with a rounder toe-box versus one with a pointier toe-box. These shoes are the same length and width. Do you notice how the shoe on the right has a much rounder toe-box compared to the shoe on the left?

In order for children to get all the benefits that a soccer cleat has to offer you must provide them with the correct shoe size – and by this I mean the correct shoe length and the correct shoe width.

I can guarantee you that a cleat that is too short, too long, or too narrow, will have a direct impact on how your child performs on the field. I have helped several children that wore cleats that were too narrow and they developed  blisters, calluses, and corns. What’s even worse, they weren’t able to play for a couple of consecutive days because of their foot issues.

When playing soccer or any other sport, children stress out out their feet and legs at a whole different level, as they are running faster and making sudden stops. I have had several cases of children complaining about knee and leg pain after playing soccer, and most of the time this is simply due to them not wearing the correct pair of soccer cleats.

Before I provide you with a selection of the best wide soccer cleats for kids, let me first show you the most common mistake that parents make when buying cleats for their kids with wide feet.

STOP Buying Longer Cleats – Fit Them Right!

One of the most common mistakes that I see parents make when buying soccer cleats for their children with wide feet is to buy them longer in order to take the pressure away from the widest part of the foot. I have spoken with several parents that explained me that because they weren’t aware that soccer cleats came in different widths, they kept trying longer sizes until the shoes didn’t feel tight anymore.

Please stop doing this!

If you provide your child with shoes that are too long you will end compromising your child’s stability, making your child more prone to falling down.

By providing your child with a pair of wide or extra wide cleats, you won’t have to get the cleats too long and you will be keeping your kids’ feet and legs healthy.

Children Soccer Cleats

There are only 2 soccer cleats available for kids with wide or extra wide feet. One is made by the shoe company New Balance and the other one is made by the shoe company Zephz. These are the only 2 shoe brands that manufacture kids soccer shoes in wide widths (W) or (EE).

The new Zephz style that was released in 2020 fits and looks better than the previous one. The cleat also comes with extra shoelaces that come with different colors, so your child can match them up with their favorite colors or team jersey. If your child has a high instep I recommend that you order the Zephz style.

The New Balance style will fit kids with wide or extra wide feet but it won’t fit a child with a high instep.

Without further due, let’s take a look at the best wide soccer cleats for kids.

In order to allow for growing room, I highly recommend that parents order soccer shoes a half a size larger than the size their children’s feet measure. This translates to 0.3 inches or 0.7 centimeters of space between your child’s longest toe and the end of the shoes.

If you are not sure what your child’s foot size is, start by reading an article that describes the simplest, yet most effective way to figure out your child’s exact foot size from home:

How to Measure Your Kids Foot – 2 Simple Steps to Determine Foot Length and Foot Width

I have noticed how fashion oriented shoes have become the trend for some children (specially as they get older). Shoe brands such as Nike, Adidas, and Under Armour seems to children’s number one choice. However, in order to keep your kid’s feet healthy, providing them with the correct shoe size and the correct shoe style is more important than the brand name. Please use your best judgment and keep reminding your children why it is important to wear cleats that fit.

Soccer Socks for Kids – Prevent Blisters, Calluses, And Corns!

Did you know that blisters are common in children who engage in soccer no matter what level they are playing? Blisters can develop not only from wearing the wrong shoe size, but also from wearing socks that don’t provide enough cushion.

Always check your kids’ feet to make sure that they don’t develop any blisters, especially on the back of the heel and bottom of the foot. Blisters form due to the repeated friction that occurs between the feet and the cleats, which causes the layers of the skin to separate from each other.

Soccer socks are important because they are meant to protect your kids’ feet against irritation and infection. Most parents believe that the main purpose of soccer socks is to hold the shin guards in place but that’s not the only purpose. The primary role of soccer socks is to protect the feet from the cleat itself, without compromising the fit of the cleat. Below you can find a selection of the best kids soccer socks that I have fitted before.

When Should I Provide My Child with Soccer Cleats?

I believe that there is not a set age to start wearing cleats as it depends on the size and weight of your child, and their muscle development should also be taken into consideration.

Sneakers with outsoles that provide good traction are a better choice for young children as having young children wear cleats too early might increase their risk of injury.

The best way to figure this out is to ask your kids’ soccer coach, as he/she will be able tell you if your child is ready to start wearing cleats. If your child is serious about playing soccer, please note that it’s almost impossible to learn proper form in sneakers, due to the simple fact that most sneakers have a wedge. Grab a pair of cleats and notice how they are generally flat. When the coach says is the right time to wear soccer cleats, go ahead and provide your child with a pair of well fitted soccer cleats.

Please take into consideration that children who don’t wear cleats on the field tend to slip and fall specially when the grass is wet.

  1. These Zephz cleats work great. Our son loves the cool designs and colors, and it’s a relief to finally find some soccer cleats that fit his super wide feet.

    • Hello Britney,

Most parents are not aware that soccer cleats for kids with wide or extra wide feet actually exist, and they end up fitting their children in soccer shoes that are too narrow and cramp their kids’ toes. This can lead to several foot issues such as blisters, calluses, and corns. I am glad that they worked out for your son!

      • The New Balance “wide width” cleats are quite narrow. They have several models, not just that one, but all are narrow. Narrower than the Diadora standard width, which is the best I have found, but not really satisfactory. Zephz does not make toddler / little kid sizes so still no good options for a 10.5 W or WW foot. If I could find a model in real leather I could try stretching it with isopropyl alcohol or shoe stretch liquid.

        • Hello Mary,

I am sorry that the New Balance style didn’t work for your child. It has worked well for certain children with wide and even extra wide feet, but it all depends on the instep of the child’s foot. Children with really high insteps will have a hard time fitting in this cleat. I will let you know if I find a cleat that is made 100% leather.

  2. I am in Canada and can only find Zephz with delivery to Canada for 222.00 dollars. Do you know of another brand that makes extra wide youth soccer cleats?

  3. My child measures 1.5 ee. We were really disappointed when ordering the zephz that they’re both too narrow and too short. They also are unfortunately quite low quality as we received them and already noticed a breakdown in the color of the shoe. We purchased them through zephz and will be returning them this week.

    • Hello Amy,

I am sorry you had a bad experience with the cleats. You mentioned that the cleats were too short, maybe you should try them in a size 2 or 2.5 Zephz cleats tend to hold up pretty well, which makes me wonder if you had bad luck with that particular style.

  4. Hi. I was hoping you may be able to help. I’m trying to find soccer shoes for my daughter who has wide feet. She doesn’t need it to have the clear/spike part. I’ll be in London for a week and thought to look there as I live overseas otherwise and there are no options as such where I am. Thanks for your help

  5. Hi! My son has a wide foot with an extremely high instep! I live in the US and ordered the Lotto Spectrum wide width soccer cleat and it fit well for my son. He made it through 2 seasons (Fall and Spring) before outgrowing them. Have you checked out this brand before?

    • Hello Amy,

Thank you so much for letting me know. I don’t recommend shoe styles that I haven’t fitted before, but I will try this soccer cleat style on a couple of children with wide feet and see how it works out.

      • Hello Anna,

You can buy them from Amazon or New Balance. The issue is that most soccer cleats are not available in a toddler size 8.5. Did the coach recommended wearing outdoor cleats? There are other soccer cleats that are available in smaller sizes but they might not fit the shape of your son’s wide feet.

  6. Hi, I hope you can help. Your advice for finding wide width sneakers was spot on, and the New Balance that we bought were perfect.

Now I am on the hunt for wide width TURF shoes. There seem to be some option for cleated shoes, but I am specifically after turd shoes. We tried New Balance Furon Dispatch in wide, but the toe box is still too narrow (especially after adding the necessary socks).

Any suggestions? New Balance was sort of our last hope.

    Thanks!

  7. Hi Juan!

Our local New Balance store was hesitant to recommend the NB 404, as they didn’t think it was appreciably wider in the toe box than the Furon Dispatch turf shoe that we tried.

After ordering FIVE different pairs of Adidas Copa models, we finally found one pair that seems to work. The Copa 19.4 turf shoe is wide through the toe box, and as the shoe runs about a half size small, ordering a half size up seemed to comfortably accommodate thick soccer socks, and not be too long.

Thanks so much for the assist!
    Ann
