Have you been looking for a pair of wide width shoes for your toddler? Do you feel like every shoe style that you try on your child fits too tight and ends up leaving marks on his or her feet?
Providing your children with the correct shoe size is extremely important if you want to keep their feet and legs healthy.
I want you to keep one thing in mind: It doesn’t matter how many features a particular shoe style has to provide, if it’s not fitted properly, your kids won’t get any of the benefits that the shoes have to offer. What’s even worse, you will end up creating all sort of issues to their feet such as blisters, calluses, and corns.
I have been helping parents find their kids’ shoes online for the last three years. I am expert when it comes to knowing which shoe styles are best for children in terms of support and FIT.
Why do I say I am an expert when it comes to finding the correct type of shoes for children?
I have been fitting children’s shoes and orthotics for ten years at a premier children’s shoe store specializing in proper fit for over forty years. We specialize in children with foot and leg problems, but we provide regular shoe fitting as well. It’s important for us to carry top quality shoes that are available in different widths, since that’s the only way we can guarantee to FIT every single child.
Finding the correct type of wide width shoes for your children takes more than just choosing a shoe that is available in “wide widths”. The shoes must also be deep (so your child’s feet can fit comfortably inside the shoe) and they also must come with a nice round toed-box (to prevent your kids’ toes from rubbing and overlapping each other). I have fitted these type of shoes before and I will share them with you in this post.
I have seen the positive impact that a good pair of well fitted shoes can have for children, since they will keep their feet healthy and allow them to perform their everyday activities comfortably.
When parents come to the shoe store stating that their kids are complaining about foot pain, the first step is to check the shoes that they are currently wearing. I will say that 90% of the time children were experiencing foot or leg pain due to either not wearing the correct shoe style or the correct shoe size.
Wearing the correct shoe size doesn’t just involve leaving enough growing for our child in the front of the shoe. In order to provide your child with the correct shoe size you must leave the proper amount of growing room length wise but also WIDTH wise.
For example, it doesn’t matter how much space there is in front of the shoe, if it’s not wide enough you will have to end up replacing them even if there is a good amount in the front for your child to grow in to them. This is because your child will outgrow the width of the shoe faster than the length.
Did you know that shoes are available in different widths such as narrow, medium, wide, and extra wide?
I have fitted the best shoe styles for toddlers with wide or extra wide feet and I will describe them here.
In this post I will describe the best wide width shoes for toddlers.
How To Choose The Perfect Toddler’s Shoes – Get It Right!
If your child has wide or extra wide feet, providing them with a pair of shoes that are labeled as “wide” or “extra wide” is simply not enough. Did you know that certain shoe styles are deeper than others? A deeper shoe means that your child’s feet will sit deeply inside the shoe and prevent the top of his or her feet to rub against the top of the shoe.
Another important feature to know is that shoes come with different toed boxes. Some shoes have pointier toed boxes while others are much rounder. If your child has wide or extra wide feet, always go for the shoe that has a round toed box. This will prevent their toes from overlapping and rubbing against each other.
How can you tell which shoe styles are deeper and have rounder toed boxes?
Well I have fitted all those shoe styles before and I will describe them below. Since the shoe store that I work for specializes with children with foot and leg issues, we must carry wide and deep shoes that will allow us to fit an orthotic inside the shoe.
I have noticed how certain shoes in wide widths sometimes even fit wider than those that are available in extra wide widths, but you don’t need to worry about this, I will make it easy for you and show you a selection of those shoes below.
What Features Must A Good Shoe Style Provide For Your Child?
If your child is already walking and putting pressure on his or her feet and legs then the shoes must minimize the impact that their feet take every everytime they become in contact with the ground.
In order to keep your kids’ feet healthy there are certain features that shoes must provide to your child’s feet and legs:
- Support: The shoes that you provide for your toddler must be lightweight and flexible, but at the same time supportive in order to minimize the impact their feet receive every time they become in contact with the ground.
- A firm heel counter: This is important in order to provide our kids with good ankle support. This is especially important for toddlers since most of the time they are performing lateral movements.
- Lightweight: The shoes must be lightweight in order for our child’s feet and legs to not get tired easily.
- Traction: This will prevent our kids from slipping and falling down.
- Breathable: This feature prevents the buildup of odor and bacteria inside the shoe.
If we happen to find a particular shoe style that provides all the features mentioned above, you will be keeping your kids’ feet and legs healthy as long as you provide them with the correct shoe size!

Keep Your Children’s Feet Healthy – Provide Them With Good Socks!
Did you know that socks act as a barrier between our kids’ feet and the shoes? While some children will refuse to wear socks with their sneakers, it’s important to help them understand the importance of wearing their socks every time they wear their shoes.
I have met several children that refused to wear any type of socks, but if you provide you child with a pair of seamless socks you will be surprised about what a difference they will make.
