Best Sneakers for Toddlers with Wide Feet and High Insteps

Last Updated: August 2026 | Juan Valenzuela, Certified Children’s Shoe Fitter

Do you always struggle to get your toddler’s shoes on and off, and notice the Velcro straps never seem to extend far enough across the shoe? Many toddlers have wide feet or high insteps, which makes finding a properly fitting shoe genuinely challenging. Wide feet need extra room across the shoe; a high instep needs extra depth to avoid pressure on top of the foot. The best sneakers for toddlers with both combine extra depth, a rounded toe box, and oversized openings for easy on-and-off.

My Experience Fitting Children’s Shoes

As a shoe fitter with years of hands-on experience, fitting a child’s shoes is something I take seriously — the future comfort and health of a growing foot rests on getting this right, and I know parents are trusting me with exactly that.

Key Features of Toddler Shoes for Wide Feet and High Insteps

1. A rounded toe box — lets toes spread naturally, which matters for balance and healthy development, and helps prevent bunions and overlapping toes.

Do you notice how the shoe on the right (New Balance) has a rounded toe-box compared to the shoe on the left (Nike)?

2. Extra depth — lets the foot sit deeper inside the shoe, preventing the instep from rubbing against the top.

Do you notice how the sneaker on the right (See Kai Run) is a lot deeper compared to the shoe on the left (Nike)?

3. Oversized openings — makes on-and-off easier for parents, and adjustable closures let you fine-tune the fit for width and instep at once.

How Can You Tell If Your Toddler Has a High Instep?

Struggling to get shoes on and off, then noticing indentations on top of the foot when you take them off? That’s a common sign of a high instep — or simply the wrong size.

Visual check: look for red marks on top of the foot after removing the shoes.

Fit test: if the Velcro straps don’t extend far enough across the shoe to close comfortably, the shoe likely isn’t deep enough for the instep.

Can You Rely on Reddit or Quora for Shoe Recommendations?

Online forums can offer general advice and community support, but they lack the specificity a foot this particular actually needs. Recommendations that worked for someone else’s child may not translate to your toddler’s exact shape — and without a professional eye, it’s hard to know which advice actually applies to your situation. That’s where a dedicated fitter (or at least a proper measurement) makes the real difference.
