Best Sandals for Kids in 2026 — Recommended by a Certified Shoe Fitter

Are you looking for the best sandals for your kids this summer but not sure which styles are actually worth buying?

Every summer parents come into the store asking the same question — which sandals will last the whole season without falling apart, hurting my child’s feet, or causing blisters?

I am a certified children’s shoe fitter with over 10 years of experience. I work in a specialized children’s shoe store where I fit kids every day. The sandals I recommend below are the exact styles I reach for when a family comes in looking for summer footwear.

Why Most Kids’ Sandals Are Not Worth Buying

Walk into any big box store in May and you will see dozens of kids’ sandals on the shelf. Most of them have one thing in common — they are designed to look good, not to support your child’s feet.

Flimsy soles. No heel padding. Straps that slide around. No traction. These are the sandals that cause blisters after one day of wear and fall apart before August.

The good news is that the correct kids’ sandal does not need to be expensive. It just needs to have the right features.

5 Key Features Every Kids’ Sandal Must Have

1. Rounded Toe Box

The toe box is the front of the sandal. It should be wide and rounded — not narrow or pointed. A round toe box allows your child’s toes to spread naturally and move freely. This prevents blisters, calluses, and long-term issues like bunions or ingrown toenails.

The difference between a sandal with a round toe box and one without.

2. Padded Heel Counter

The heel counter is the back part of the sandal. Press on it — it should feel firm and well padded. A good heel counter keeps the foot in position and prevents the most common summer complaint I hear from parents — blisters on the back of the heel.

3. Multiple Points of Adjustability

The best kids’ sandals have two or three Velcro straps — not just one. Multiple straps allow the sandal to be adjusted to fit your child’s exact foot shape. This is especially important for children with high insteps or wide feet. It also means the sandal stays securely on the foot during active play.

4. Good Traction

Summer means wet pool decks, slippery grass, rocky trails, and sandy beaches. The outsole of the sandal must have a patterned rubber grip that provides reliable traction on all of these surfaces. A flat smooth sole is a slip waiting to happen.

5. Lightweight and Flexible

The sandal must be lightweight and flexible enough to allow natural foot movement. But not too flexible — a sandal that bends all the way in half provides no support at all. It should flex at the ball of the foot and no further.

What About Flip Flops and Crocs?

Parents ask me this every summer. The short answer is — use them sparingly.

Flip flops offer almost no support, no heel counter, and no traction. They increase the risk of trips and falls and cause blisters around the toe post.

I recommend flip flops for a quick walk to the pool, but they should not be your child’s main summer sandal.

Crocs are more supportive than flip flops. But they lack the traction and adjustability needed for active play. They work well for short, casual wear. For a full day at summer camp or on a trail, choose one of the sandals below instead.

Does Your Child Know Their Foot Shape?

Before ordering any sandal online, you need to know your child’s exact foot shape — narrow, medium, wide, extra wide, or high instep. Each shape requires different considerations to get the right fit.

I offer a free virtual shoe fitting service that helps you measure your child’s feet from home in just a few minutes. It covers both length and width. This will save you a lot of frustration when ordering online.

Frequently Asked Questions

At what age can kids start wearing sandals?

As soon as a child is walking confidently and steadily. For early walkers — typically between 12 and 18 months — I recommend sandals with at least two adjustable straps and a firm heel counter to provide stability. Avoid flat flip-flop style sandals for young walkers as they provide no support and increase the risk of falls.

Are water sandals safe for kids?

Yes — water sandals are a great choice for summer. The key is making sure the outsole has good rubber traction for wet surfaces. Avoid sandals with smooth leather or fabric soles near water. Closed-toe water sandals like the Keen Newport H2 offer the added protection of a toe cap, which I recommend for rocky beaches, trails, and creek beds.

My child gets blisters every summer — what am I doing wrong?

The most common causes of summer blisters are sandals that are too narrow, a heel counter that is too stiff without enough padding, or a sandal that fits too loosely and allows the foot to slide around. Make sure the sandal fits the correct width for your child’s foot, the heel is well padded, and all straps are adjusted snugly before heading out.

How often should I replace my child’s sandals?

Check the fit every 2 to 3 months for toddlers and every 3 to 4 months for older children. Sandals also wear down faster than sneakers because they are exposed to water, sand, and outdoor terrain. If the outsole is worn smooth, the straps are fraying, or the footbed has flattened out, it is time for a new pair.

Should kids wear socks with sandals?

For most sandals, no — they are designed to be worn barefoot. However for children with sensory sensitivities or those who wear orthotics, thin seamless socks can help prevent irritation. If your child wears AFOs or SMOs, always wear the brace sock underneath the brace before putting on the sandal.
