Best Sandals for Kids with Extra Wide Feet: Round Toe-Boxes (2026)
Extra Wide Shoes · Written by Juan Valenzuela, Certified Children’s Shoe Fitter · Updated June 2026
If you’ve ever stood in a shoe store — or scrolled through Amazon for an hour — trying to find sandals that actually fit your child’s extra wide feet, you know how frustrating the process can be. Most sandals are cut for medium or standard feet, which means kids with extra wide feet end up squeezed in, pinched at the toes, or unable to get the sandals on at all.
I’ve been fitting children’s shoes professionally for over a decade, and extra wide feet — especially when combined with a high instep — are one of the most common challenges families bring to me. Below I’ll share exactly which sandals work, what to look for, and how to tell when a sandal is the wrong fit before you even put it on your child’s foot.
Does Any of This Sound Familiar?
Before I get into recommendations, here’s a quick checklist. If you’re nodding at even one of these, you’re in the right place:
- Sandals go on, but leave deep red marks or imprints on your child’s foot by the end of the day
- The buckle or strap won’t reach across the top of the foot
- Your child’s pinky toe gets pushed against the side of the sandal
- You’ve been sizing up in length to get them to fit — and now the sandals are flopping off
- Your child has both extra wide feet and a high instep, and nothing seems to work
That last combination — extra wide plus high instep — is the hardest to fit, because the foot needs more room in two different directions at once. I’ll flag which sandals below handle both.

Images of Children with Extra Wide Feet
I have had the privilege of helping many children find the perfect sandals for their extra wide feet. These children struggled with sandals that constantly pinched their toes, but I was able to find a pair of extra wide sandals that fit them perfectly, so I am confident I will be able to help your child as well.

What I Actually Look for in a Sandal for Extra Wide Feet
After years of fitting children, these are the three things I check before I’d ever hand a sandal to a family dealing with extra wide feet. The good news: once you know what to look for, you can spot a good fit in seconds.
A genuinely round toe box. Not just “roomy” — actually round, so the toes can lie flat and spread naturally without any one toe getting pushed sideways. This is the single biggest factor in preventing blisters and pinky-toe calluses.

Extra depth through the instep. Width and depth aren’t the same thing. A sandal can be wide at the toe but still clamp down on a high instep. I look for sandals that open up fully — ideally with a back strap that releases completely — so the foot can drop in without force.

At least two points of adjustability. One Velcro strap isn’t enough for extra wide feet. Two or three straps — especially one at the back — give you the ability to open the sandal wide for entry, then snug it down to a secure fit. This is what prevents the heel from slipping even when the toe box is wide.

By the way, Keen released a sandal that is adaptable and has a velcro strap on the back, which makes it really easy for children to slide their feet in and out of the sandals. This is an awesome feature, especially for children with extra wide feet.

Some of the sandals below are available in labeled wide (W) or extra wide (XW) widths. Others aren’t labeled but fit naturally wide — I’ve personally confirmed each one works for extra wide feet in the store. Check the fit note under each listing. How to Tell If Your Child’s Sandals Are Too Narrow
You don’t need to wait until your child complains. Here’s what to look for the moment the sandals are on:
Red marks or imprints on the top or sides of the foot after wearing for an hour or less — this means the strap is pressing against the foot, not lying flat on it.

Pinky toe pushed inward against the side panel of the sandal — this is the most common early sign of a sandal that’s too narrow. The small toe takes the hit first.

Strap won’t buckle on the loosest setting — if you’re maxing out the Velcro even before tightening, the sandal simply isn’t wide enough.
A Note on Crocs for Extra Wide Feet
Crocs work for short-term wear — beach trips, poolside, around the house. They’re roomy, quick to dry, and easy on and off. What they don’t provide is the strap support and heel enclosure that kids need for extended walking or active play. If your child wears them for a day at the park or a long walk, they’ll likely be shifting their toes to grip the shoe rather than walking naturally. I have a separate resource on the safest Crocs styles for children if you want to explore that option alongside the sandals above.
Still Not Sure? Reach Out Directly
Every child’s foot is different, and sometimes a list isn’t enough. If you’ve tried a style from above and it didn’t work, or if your child’s foot shape doesn’t fit neatly into “wide” or “extra wide,” feel free to email me directly. I’ll ask a few questions and give you a specific recommendation based on your child’s measurements.
How to Measure Your Child’s Foot at Home
If you’re unsure whether your child has extra wide feet, don’t guess. I put together a virtual shoe fitting guide that walks you through how to measure both foot length and width at home in two steps. It’ll also help you figure out if your child has a high instep — which changes which sandal I’d recommend.

how do you order?
Hello Angela,
By clicking on the image of the sandal that you want to try you will either be redirected to Amazon or Zappos where you can place your order.
My son is eight. His foot is 8.25 inches; extra wide. Jambu sandals worked once for him. And following years each pair gave him hot spots. He wears Nike and New Balance wide tennis shoes. What sport sandal would you recommend for him?
Hi Tanya –
I am not sure if you are looking for a closed toed or an open toed sandal so I am providing you with both options below:
Water Play Sandal for Extra Wide Feet: Option 1
Water Play Sandal for Extra Wide Feet: Option 2
You can also try the Newport style made by Keen: Option 3
I hope this helps!
Thank you so very much. Between the closed-toe options, which do you think is widest?
Hi Tanya –
Do you know if your son has a high instep? If he has a high instep then I recommend the Keen style as it’s a little bit deeper. Otherwise I recommend the Merrell one.
If I were you I will keep an eye on his Nike sneakers, they are not really effective in fitting children with wide or extra wide feet.
Sorry – yes, my mistake. He’s been wearing solely New Balance, not Nike!
Hi Juan,
Thank you so much. I love the first one but unfortunately they are not sold in Canada. I’ve ordered the option 2 (Im worried the sole isn’t flexible enough?)
What are your thoughts on this fisherman sandal: https://amzn.to/3IZycbW
Kind regards,
Hannah
Hello Hannah,
I will choose the second option (Stride Rite). PLAE shoes fit wide but I am not sure if they fill fit an extra wide foot. Let me know if you have any other questions.
Hello Juan,
THanks again for your response. I have one last question about two more brands: Momo baby and also Livie & Luca – do either of these fit wide?
Thanks again and kindest regards,
Hannah
Hello Hannah,
I have never fitted the shoe brand “Momo baby” but I have fitted “Livie & Luca” and the shoes will fit a child with wide feet but NOT with extra wide feet.
I hope this helps! Let me know if you have any other questions.
Hi Juan,
So nice to have found a blog dedicated to kids shoes! I find it so hard to get proper fitting shoes. I was wondering – could you reccomend a sandal for an early walker (14 month boy) for extra wide feet? (We currently have a tsikahoshi sneaker in size 7 that you reccomend on your website and the fit is perfect).
Thank you,
Hannah
Hello Hannah,
I am glad that you found the website informative. Here you can find my recommendations for your boy with extra wide feet:
Stride Rite Sandal: Option 1 Make sure that you select the “W” (wide width) option. I have fitted boys with extra wide feet in this sandal before, because it runs really wide.
Stride Rite Sandal: Option 2 make sure you select the “XW” (extra wide) option.
Are these the types of sandals you had in mind? Let me know, otherwise I can help you find something different.
Juan
Where is the info. on the sandal? On a page about socks for wide feet there’s no list either? What am I missing here? Thanks.
Hello AK,
Please try refreshing your page and it should be working fine now.
Once I open each shoe they all show a M width. My son is an XW. Will the M fit work for him?
Also. He is a 6 1/2 XW big kid
Biggest size I found was 6 M big kid.
Will these work for him or do I need to shop men’s shoes?
He is only 8 but he’s big for his age and has bigger feet!
Sorry to be troublesome.
Thank You!
Hello Amanda,
The sandals don’t come labeled as XW (Extra Wide), but the regular width fits really wide. I have fitted children with extra wide feet in these sandals before. I am not 100% sure they will work for his feet but you should definitely try them. I will recommend that you order the size 6, because they fit very long. If the 6 is not long enough, let me know and I would recommend a pair of men sandals for him (please keep in mind there might be a big price jump between kids and men’s shoes).
I hope this helps!
