The Most Important Thing to Know: Labeled Narrow vs. Naturally Narrow
This is the question I get most often from parents of narrow-footed children, and it’s the source of most confusion when shopping online.
Labeled narrow (N): The shoe carries an official narrow width designation — the last was designed to be narrower than standard, and the width is stamped inside the shoe or noted in the product listing. Naturally narrow: The shoe doesn’t carry a narrow label but runs significantly narrower than standard through its construction. Adjustable closure. Laces allow the most precise tightening across the instep — you can snug the laces down more firmly to compensate for a narrow foot without affecting the toe area. Velcro straps are the second-best option. Slip-ons and elastic closures are the hardest to secure on narrow feet.
Two Fixes That Help Before You Buy New Shoes
Tongue pads. A tongue pad is a self-adhesive insert placed on the underside of the shoe’s tongue. It fills the gap between the tongue and the top of the foot, pushes the foot back into the heel cup, and significantly reduces the slippage that narrow-footed children experience in standard-width shoes. They’re inexpensive and can be the difference between a dress shoe that works and one that gets returned.
Thicker dress socks. A thicker sock adds a small amount of volume around the foot, which can meaningfully reduce heel slippage and side-gapping in a shoe that’s only slightly too wide. This works best as a supplement to a properly fitted narrow shoe — not as a permanent workaround for a shoe that’s significantly too wide.

A child with a wide foot won’t be able to fit in these shoe styles, and a child with a medium width foot might be able to fit in these shoe styles.
