Are you having a hard time finding a pair of wide basketball shoes for your child? Do you feel like you have tried on several pairs and always end up empty handed?
I am always stressing to parents how it doesn’t matter how wide or narrow their kids’ feet are, there is always at least one particular shoe style out there that will fit the shape of their kids’ feet perfectly, and I will help you find it!
I have been fitting children’s shoes and orthotics for the last 10 years, working for a specialized children’s shoe store that focuses on children with foot and leg problems, as well as regular shoe fitting. I am familiar with the best kids’ shoe brands and the best styles among these brands.
For the last 3 years I have been helping families find the perfect pair of shoes for their children online.
The shoe company New Balance used to make a particular basketball shoe style for kids’ that was available in wide and extra wide widths. That shoe style got discontinued but luckily there is a new style made by Adidas that is the one I have been using to fit children with wide or extra wide feet.
This is the ONLY basketball shoe style made for kids that is actually available in wide widths (as of April, 2019)
Please keep in mind that if you provide your children with basketball shoes that are too narrow, you will end up creating all sort of foot issues to their feet such as blisters, calluses, and corns.
When children are playing a particular sport, they are stressing out their feet and legs at a whole different level. They are also making movements that they don’t normally do, such as side to side movements or sudden stops. There is also a lot of jumping involved in basketball, and the shoes must be supportive enough to minimize the impact that your kids’ feet take every time they come in contact with the ground.
Did you know that the risk for injury is higher in sports with more jumping, such as basketball, or sports with quick direction changes, such as soccer or football?
Most toe, foot, or ankle injuries occur during sports, that is the reason why you must provide your children with a sport-specific shoe in order to minimize the risk of injury since those types of shoes are engineered to provide the support, motion control, and cushioning that their feet need.
I want you to remember one thing: It doesn’t matter how many features a particular shoe style provides to your child’s feet and legs, if the shoes are not fitted properly, your child won’t get any of the benefits that the shoes have to offer.
I will show you a selection of the best wide basketball shoes for kids, but I want to show you first what features these basketball shoe styles will provide to your child’s feet and how to figure out your child’s exact foot size from home.
Wide Basketball Shoes for Kids – The 3 Most Important Features
If you want to keep your kids’ feet and legs healthy while playing basketball the shoes must provide the following features:
✅ Firm heel counter: This is the part of the shoe that provides ankle support and minimizes the impact that your kids’ feet take every time they come in contact with the ground.
✅ Lightweight and Flexible: These features will prevent your kids’ feet and legs from easily getting tired.
✅ Shoelaces vs Velcro closure: Shoelaces will provide more support and more stability to your child compared to Velcro shoes. The reason for this is that shoelaces will hug your kids’ feet better, and they will also push your kids’ heel back, securing them against the back of the shoe.
I am always emphasizing to parents that it does’t matter how many features a particular shoe style provides, if the shoes are not fitted properly which involves getting the correct shoe length and the correct shoe width, your child won’t get any of the benefits that the shoes have to offer.
I always recommend parents to take their children to their local children’s shoe store that they trust, the issue is that most stores have been closing down and parents end up buying their kids’ shoes online. There is nothing wrong with this, but you must know your child’s exact foot size in order to know what size to order.
I created a map that showcases the best fitting children’s shoe stores by state, so I suggest you start by taking a look at that map:
If after looking at that map you still can’t seem to identify a shoe store in your area, then proceed to taking a look at an article along with a video I created that describes the simplest, yet most effective way to figure out your child’s foot size from home:
IMPORTANT TIP: Always make your children try the football cleats that they will be playing on with the same exact type of socks that they will wear on the field.
Now that you know what features a basketball shoe must provide and how to figure out your child’s foot size from home, you are ready to take a look at a selection of the best wide basketball shoes for kids.
The Best Wide Basketball Shoes for Kids – ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Please keep in mind that I only write reviews of shoe styles that I have fitted before, otherwise I wouldn’t know how well-made they are, the amount of support that they provide, and how they fit.
These shoes are have everything your children need to perform comfortably when playing basketball. They are lightweight, flexible, have a firm heel counter (for lateral movement), excellent traction, and they are available in wide widths.
Like I mentioned before, there is only one basketball shoe style that is actually available in wide widths and it’s made by Adidas. I have fitted this shoe style before and not only it will fit a child with wide or extra wide feet, but it also provides all the important features that I described above.
Please find below the best wide basketball shoe style for children. Disclosure: Keep in mind that we may receive commissions when you click our links and make purchases.
This basketball shoe style fits “short”, so I recommend going a whole size longer of the size that your child measured at the standard foot measuring tool (Brannock device), in order to allow for growing room. Also keep in mind that basketball socks tend to be cushioned and padded which will take some extra room inside the shoe.
Not providing your child with sport specific shoes (specially as they get older and the intensity is higher) will lead not only to foot and ankle problems, but leg, hip, and back pain as well.
Basketball Socks for Kids– Let’s Keep Your Kids’ Feet Healthy!
Basketball socks play a key role when it comes to keeping your kids’ feet healthy. They will act as a barrier between your kids’ feet and the shoes and prevent the buildup of bacteria inside the shoe and the formation of blisters.
When it comes to specific basketball socks, they play a key role since they will cushion your kids’ feet in specific areas to prevent the constant friction between the court and the shoes.
There are specific basketball socks that provide great cushioning and breathability for when your child is playing basketball. You can take a look at a selection of the best basketball socks for children in another article I wrote. Go to the link below:
How to Tie Your Kids Basketball Shoes – It Makes a Difference!
I always try to emphasize to parents to never underestimate the importance of properly tying their kids’ shoes. When your kids’ shoes are tied properly, they will provide more stability and support to your kids’ feet.
The other benefits of properly tied shoes is how they will keep your kids’ ankles locked, supporting them and protecting them from injuries.
Before your child is ready to head out to the basketball court, make sure you use all the eyelets (holes) of the shoes for maximum support and stability. If your child doesn’t know how to tie his/her shoelaces yet, make sure you double knot them.
