Have you been looking for a pair of wide basketball shoes for your child? Has your child been asking you for a pair of basketball shoes and you can’t seem to find a pair to fit his or her wide feet?
I always tell parents that it doesn’t matter how wide or how narrow their kids’ feet are, there is at least one particular shoe style out there that will fit the shape of his or her feet perfectly.
I have been fitting children’s shoes and orthotics for ten years at a premier children’s shoe store specializing in proper fit for over forty years. We specialize in children with foot and leg problems, but we provide regular shoe fitting as well. It’s important for us to carry top quality shoes that are available in different widths, since that’s the only way we can guarantee to FIT every single child.
The shoe company New Balance used to make a particular basketball shoe style for kids’ that was available in wide and extra wide widths. However, that shoe style got discontinued but luckily there is a new style made by Adidas that is the one I have been using to fit children with wide or extra wide feet.
That particular shoe style is available in wide widths and will fit a child with wide or extra wide feet.
When children are playing a particular sport, they are stressing their feet and legs at a whole different level. That is the reason why it’s so important to provide them with shoes that FIT properly.
Did you know that the risk for injury is higher in sports with more jumping, such as basketball, or sports with quick direction changes, such as soccer or football?
Most toe, foot, or ankle injuries occur during sports. When we provide our children with a sport-specific shoe we are minimizing the risk of injury since those types of shoes are engineered to provide the support, motion control, and cushioning that their feet need.
I want you to remember one thing: It doesn’t matter how many features a particular shoe style has to provide to your child, if it’s not fitted properly, your child won’t get any of the benefits that the shoes have to offer.
If you have been providing your child with a pair of basketball shoes that were too narrow just because you didn’t know that basketball shoes for kids with wide or extra wide feet actually existed, you can STOP doing that now and finally allow your child to play in a pair of basketball shoes that actually FIT his or her feet!
Can you imagine playing basketball, soccer, or baseball in a pair of shoes that feels too tight? The constant friction will lead to several foot issues such as blisters, calluses, and corns.
In this post I will describe the best wide basketball shoes for kids!
What Features Must A Good Basketball Shoe Provide?
If you want to keep your kids’ feet and legs healthy while playing basketball the shoes must provide the following features:
- Firm heel counter: This is the part of the shoe that provides ankle support and minimizes the impact that our kids’ feet receive every time they come in contact with the ground.
- Arch support: Shoes that provide good arch support will prevent your kids’ feet from getting tired when running on the court.
- The shoes must come with shoelaces and not velcro closure: Shoelaces will provide more support and more stability to your child than velcro shoes. The reason for this is that shoelaces will hug your kids’ feet and also secure his or her ankles in the shoes.
If we find a shoe that provides all of those features, your child will be ready to go! However, the MOST important feature is that the shoe MUST be the correct shoe size! By the correct shoe size, I mean the correct shoe length and the correct shoe width.
Please remember that it all starts with getting your child the correct shoe size, so if you are one of those several parents that don’t have a children’s shoe store in their area that they trust you should START by reading a post I wrote where I explain the most simple and most effective way to figure out your child’s correct shoe size:
Now that you know which features a basketball shoe must provide and how to make sure your child is wearing the correct shoe size, let’s take a look at a selection of the best wide basketball shoes for kids!
Wide Basketball Shoes – The Secret Revealed!
Like I mentioned before, there is only basketball shoe style that is actually available in wide widths and it’s made by Adidas. I have fitted this shoe style before and not only it will FIT a child with wide or extra wide feet, but it also provides all the features I mentioned above!
Please find below the only basketball shoe for kids that is available in wide widths:
This shoe style runs “short”, so I recommend going a whole size longer of the size that your child measures in the shoe measuring scale in order to allow for growing room. Also keep in mind that basketball socks tend to be cushioned and padded which will take some extra room inside the shoe.
This proves that it doesn’t matter what type of shoe style you are looking for your child, there is always at least one shoe style that will fit the shape of your kids perfectly and I will help you find it. If your child is into other sports such as soccer, baseball or football and you have been looking for a pair of wide or extra wide cleats for him/her you can take a look at these three articles below:
Maybe you know a family who has been looking for wide or extra wide cleats for their kids and now you can help me spread the word.
Tying Your Kids Basketball Shoes – It Makes A Difference!
I always try to emphasize to parents to never underestimate the importance of properly tied shoes. When your kids’ shoes are tied properly, they will provide more stability and support to your kids’ feet.
The other benefits of properly tied shoes is how they will keep your kids’ ankles locked, protecting them from injuries.
Before your child is ready to play, make sure you use all the eyelets (holes) of the shoes for maximum support and stability. If your child does not know how to tie shoelaces yet, make sure you double knot them before he or she goes into the field to play. The last thing you want is your child running around the basketball field with untied shoes.
I actually wrote an article where I explain the most effective way to tie shoes for children who play sports, and I also explain the most effective way to teach a child how to tie his or her shoes. You can find that article here:
Let’s Not Forget About The Socks – Keeping Your Kids’ Feet Healthy!
Socks play a key role when it comes to keeping our kids’ feet healthy. They act as a barrier between our kids’ feet and the shoes and prevent the formation of bacteria inside the shoe.
When it comes to specific basketball socks, they play a key role since they cushion our kids’ feet and prevent the formation of blisters or calluses from the constant friction between the court and the shoes.
There are specific basketball socks that provide great cushioning and breath-ability when your child is playing basketball. While I can’t get into too much detail about the importance of socks in this article I wrote a post where I describe the best basketball socks for kids’ and you can find it here:
Not providing your child with sport specific shoes (specially as they get older and the intensity is higher) will lead not only to foot and ankle problems, but leg, hip, and back pain as well.
Remember that providing your child with the correct pair of basketball shoes will be the best way of protecting your child’s ankles and feet from getting injured.
Now that you know which are the best wide basketball shoes for kids you are ready to make the most informative decision!
