If you’ve been buying your child school shoes in the right length and they still feel too tight across the top of the foot — or the buckle or Velcro barely reaches, or the shoe leaves a red line across the instep by lunchtime — the problem almost certainly isn’t the size. It’s the depth.
A high instep means there’s more foot volume along the top of the foot than a standard school shoe is designed to accommodate. Most back-to-school shoes are built for a standard instep height, which means children with a high instep end up in shoes that fit the length but compress the top of the foot all day. After a decade of fitting children’s school shoes, I can tell you this is one of the most misdiagnosed fitting problems I see — parents size up repeatedly, the shoes get longer and longer, and the instep problem never actually gets solved.
This guide will help you identify whether your child has a high instep, understand what a school shoe actually needs to accommodate it, and choose the right style for your school’s dress code requirements.
Four Signs Your Child Has a High Instep
You don’t need a shoe store to confirm a high instep. These four signs will tell you:
The shoe closes on the tightest setting. If the Velcro or buckle is maxed out even before the shoe is fully tightened, the instep clearance inside the shoe is too shallow for your child’s foot volume — not a sizing issue.
A red line or pressure mark across the top of the foot. This is the clearest sign. When you remove the shoe at the end of the day and see a distinct indentation across the instep, the shoe was pressing against the foot rather than sitting above it.
The shoe won’t go on without a fight. A high-instep foot has to be forced over the heel counter of a standard school shoe because the opening isn’t deep enough to allow the foot to drop straight in. This is also why high-instep children often walk out of their shoes — the foot never fully seated inside.
The child complains about tightness “on top” rather than at the toes. Toe complaints usually mean the shoe is too short. Top-of-foot complaints almost always mean the instep clearance is too shallow.
What a School Shoe Actually Needs for a High Instep
Two things, in order of importance:
Extra depth above the footbed. This is the defining feature. The footbed sits at the bottom of the shoe; the distance between the footbed and the inside of the upper at the instep point is the critical measurement. A shoe with good depth has visible clearance here when you look inside. A shoe with shallow depth has the upper touching or nearly touching the footbed.
An oversized opening. Even a deep shoe won’t work for a high instep if the opening is too small for the foot to drop in cleanly. A wide, generous opening — ideally one where the tongue can be pulled fully back or the back strap releases completely — is what makes the difference between a shoe that works and one that causes a daily wrestling match.
Does a More Expensive School Shoe Fit Better for High Insteps?
Not necessarily. Price correlates with materials and brand positioning — not with instep clearance. Some of the most affordable school shoes I’ve fitted have better depth than shoes at twice the price. Size by length first — never size up in length to try to gain instep room. A longer shoe shifts the foot forward, loosens the heel, and doesn’t add any vertical clearance above the footbed.
