The Best Sneakers for Toddlers with Extra Wide Feet and High Insteps

Last updated: May 2026 | By Juan Valenzuela, Certified Children’s Shoe Fitter

If your toddler has extra wide feet and you are struggling to find shoes that fit, you are not alone. This is one of the most common challenges I hear from parents at the store. Most mainstream shoe brands are designed for medium-width feet, which means parents of toddlers with extra wide feet often go through shoe after shoe before finding something that actually works.

As a certified children’s shoe fitter with over 10 years of experience, I have helped hundreds of toddlers with extra wide feet and high insteps find the right shoes. In this guide I will walk you through exactly what to look for, which brands work best, and give you a curated list of the 10 best sneakers for toddlers with extra wide feet that I personally recommend.

How Do You Know If Your Toddler Has Extra Wide Feet?

Before diving into shoe recommendations, it helps to confirm that your toddler does indeed have extra wide feet. Here are the most common signs:

Red marks or indentations on top of the feet. If you notice red marks or indentations on the top of your toddler’s feet every time you remove their shoes, this is a strong sign that the shoes are too narrow. Shoes that are consistently too narrow can cause blisters, calluses, and corns over time.

Difficulty getting shoes on and off. If it takes significant effort to slide your toddler’s foot into a shoe even in the correct length size, the shoe is likely too narrow or too shallow for your child’s foot shape.

Toes overlapping or bunching inside shoes. If your toddler’s toes are rubbing against each other or against the sides of the shoe, the toe box is too narrow for their foot.

The pinky toe spills over the sides of the shoes. This is one of the clearest visual signs of extra wide feet.

The Most Common Mistake Parents Make

The most common mistake I see is parents assuming that buying a shoe labeled “extra wide” (XW) will automatically solve the problem. The width label is important, but it is only one piece of the puzzle. There are three additional features that extra wide toddler shoes must have to truly fit your child’s feet correctly.

Key Features to Look for in Extra Wide Toddler Shoes

1. Extra Depth This is the feature most parents overlook. Extra depth allows your toddler’s foot to sit deeply inside the shoe instead of being pushed up against the top. Shoes with extra depth also tend to have wider openings, making them much easier to get on and off — which is a huge practical benefit with toddlers.

The difference in depth between a standard shoe and a properly deep shoe is significant, especially for children with high insteps.

2. Rounded Toe Box A rounded toe box gives your toddler’s toes room to splay naturally inside the shoe without rubbing against each other or pressing against the sides.

3. Oversized Openings Shoes with oversized openings — typically achieved through wide double Velcro straps or a wide-opening design — allow you to open the shoe up fully before sliding your toddler’s foot in. This makes dressing much easier and reduces stress on the shoe’s structure.

Shoe Brands for Toddlers with Extra Wide Feet

New Balance is my top recommendation for toddlers with extra wide feet. Their shoes come in true extra wide (XW) widths, tend to have the deepest construction, and have the most consistent sizing between styles. If your toddler has both extra wide feet and a high instep, New Balance is almost always my first recommendation.

Stride Rite is a solid second option. Their extra wide styles are well-constructed and APMA-approved, though they are generally not quite as wide or deep as New Balance.

See Kai Run does not label their shoes as extra wide, but they fit naturally wide due to their generous construction. They are a great option for toddlers who fall between wide and extra wide.

Tsukihoshi is another brand worth knowing. All Tsukihoshi shoes run wider than standard medium-width shoes, and they feature seamless interiors that are especially good for toddlers with sensory sensitivities.

Ten Little and IKIKI are two affordable brands that fit naturally wide and are favorites among parents for their practicality and easy-on, easy-off designs.

Brands to avoid for extra wide feet: Nike, Under Armour, Adidas, and most other mainstream athletic brands. These styles are designed for medium-width feet and will not accommodate your toddler’s foot shape comfortably.

Need a Personalized Recommendation?

Every toddler’s foot is different. Some children have extra wide feet and flat arches, others have extra wide feet with high insteps, and some need to accommodate orthotics or AFOs. Don’t Forget the Socks

The right shoes will not work as well as they should if your toddler is wearing the wrong socks. Regular socks with thick seams across the toe area can cause your toddler’s toes to overlap or rub against each other, especially in wider feet. I recommend seamless socks specifically designed for toddlers.

Seamless socks are great because they allow your toddlers to freely move their toes and prevent them from overlapping against one another.

Be Careful About Fitting Your Toddler in Narrow Shoes

Many toddlers develop blisters from wearing shoes that are too narrow. The most common place they get blisters is on their small toe (pinky toe).

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best sneaker brand for toddlers with extra wide feet?

New Balance is my top recommendation. Their toddler shoes come in true extra wide (XW) widths, have the deepest construction, and have the most consistent sizing. The 574, 990v6, and Fresh Foam Arishi v4 are the three styles I recommend most often.

Can my toddler wear Nike or Adidas if they have extra wide feet?

In most cases, no. Nike and Adidas design their toddler shoes for medium-width feet. The toe boxes are tapered and the depth is insufficient for toddlers with extra wide feet or high insteps. I recommend sticking to the brands listed in this article.

How often should I check if my toddler’s shoes still fit?

Toddlers can grow up to three shoe sizes per year. I recommend checking the fit every three months.

My toddler is labeled extra wide but no extra wide shoes seem to fit. What am I doing wrong?

Width alone is not enough. You also need extra depth and a rounded toe box. A shoe can be labeled extra wide but still be too shallow for a child with a high instep. Focus on the three key features described in this article — extra depth, rounded toe box, and oversized openings.
