Are your child’s cowboy boots too tight, a struggle to pull on, or leaving red marks on the tops of their feet? Most cowboy boots are made with pointed toes and shallow insides, so kids with extra wide feet just don’t fit. As a certified children’s shoe fitter with over 10 years of experience, I look for cowboy boots with extra depth, round toes, and wide openings, so your child can wear them comfortably and get them on without a fight.

Why Cowboy Boots Are Hard to Find for Extra Wide Feet

Traditional cowboy boots are built narrow. The toe tapers to a point, the inside is shallow, and the shaft has no laces, so you can’t loosen it. A child with extra wide feet ends up with squeezed toes, and many can’t even get their foot past the ankle.

Very few kids’ cowboy boots come in wide or extra wide widths. The trick is finding styles that are cut roomy to begin with.

Does Your Child Also Have a High Instep?

Many kids with extra wide feet also have a high instep. The instep is the top of the foot, between the toes and the ankle. When it’s high, the foot is thick from top to bottom as well as wide.

High insteps are the biggest problem with cowboy boots. Since you pull a cowboy boot on, the foot has to bend through the narrow spot where the shaft meets the foot. If the boot is too shallow, a high instep gets stuck there, and once it’s on, the top of the boot presses on the foot all day. Every boot below has extra depth, a zipper, or an oversized opening to get around this.

What to Look for in Extra Wide Cowboy Boots

Extra Depth

Extra depth means more room between the sole and the top of the boot. It fits a high instep and a thick foot without pressing down on it.

A Round or Broad Square Toe

A round toe gives the toes room to spread out, which prevents blisters and pinching. A broad square toe works too. Avoid pointed toes, which squeeze extra wide feet the most.

A Wide Opening, Zipper, or Pull Tabs

A wider opening at the top of the shaft lets the foot slide in without getting stuck, and it fits kids with fuller calves. A side zipper is even better, since it opens the whole boot up. Pull tabs give your child something to grab.

Soft Uppers

Soft leather, suede, or soft faux leather bends with your child’s foot instead of pressing on it. Leather and suede also soften over time, so the boot slowly shapes itself to the foot. Avoid stiff, hard uppers that don’t give at all.

How to Get the Right Size

  • Order a whole size larger than your child’s current foot size. Cowboy boots have no laces to adjust, and the extra room helps extra wide feet and high insteps fit.
  • Try them on with the socks your child will wear. Thick boot socks take up room, so a boot that fits with thin socks can feel tight with thick ones.
  • Check the top of the foot. Once the boot is on, your child shouldn’t have red marks on top of the foot when you take it off.

Are Cowboy Boots OK for Kids with Flat Feet?
