Extra Wide Shoes for Girls – The Best Shoe Style for Girls with Extra Wide Feet!
Does your daughter have extra wide feet and complain that all shoes squeeze and pinch her toes? Are you always struggling to get your daughter’s shoes on and off? The best extra wide shoes for girls are extra deep, provide round toe-boxes, and oversized openings, and should be available in extra wide widths if they don’t fit naturally wide.
You should know that not all extra wide feet are the same. Some children might have a very wide forefoot while some others might have very high insteps (the top part of the foot). Below you can find some images of girls with extra wide feet:
I have helped hundreds of children with extra wide feet find the perfect pair of shoes for their feet, and I am confident that I will be able to help your daughter as well.
Does Your Daughter Also Have High Insteps?
Some girls have high insteps in addition to their extra wide feet, and that makes it a lot harder to find shoes that fit. Do you know what the instep of the foot is? The instep is the top part of the foot, and when it’s high, it makes it a lot harder to find shoes that fit. Take a look at the image below to visualize where the instep of the foot is located. Now let’s take a look at all the extra foot volume that needs to be fitted inside the shoes:
Most Common Mistakes Parents Make
The most common mistake that I see parents make is to assume that just because a shoe style is labeled as extra wide (XW), the shoe is automatically going to fit the shape of their child’s extra wide feet. In addition to being available in extra wide widths, the shoes need to provide two important features.
What Makes the Shoes I Recommend Effective for Extra Wide Feet?
1️⃣ The shoes I recommend provide extra depth, which prevents the top part of your kids’ feet from rubbing against the top part of the shoes. Let me show you the difference in depth between two shoes that are the same size in length. Do you notice how the shoe on the right is going to be capable of fitting the shape of a child with a high instep better than the shoe on the left?
2️⃣ The shoes I recommend provide rounder toe-boxes to prevent your kids’ toes from rubbing or overlapping against one another. Let me show you the difference between a shoe with a rounder toe-box versus one with a pointier one:
The issue is that shoes don’t come labeled as “extra deep” or with “rounder toe-boxes”, but the good news is that I have fitted those types of shoes before and I will help you find them. Another important feature that the shoes I recommended provide (which is optional), is for the shoes to have oversized openings. This feature makes it easier to get the shoes on and off, especially if your daughter has a high instep.

Let me know in the comments section below if you have found a specific extra wide shoe for your daughter that has worked well for her feet.
Hi,
Thank you for all this info. Do you have any recommendations for a dress shoe for an 8 year old girl with wide feet and high instep? Thank you!
Hello Andrea.
Yes, but I first need to know what shoe size your daughter wears to check what shoes are available in her size.
Hello! I have this same question. Looking for dressy shoes (ballet flats, Mary janes, etc) for both my girls who have high insteps. One is a big kid size 4 extra wide w/ high instep. The other is a toddler size 9 wide with a high instep. Thank you so much!
Hello Lakisha,
The shoes below are for your younger daughter who wears a toddler shoe size 9:
Option 1 Available in extra wide widths
Option 2 Not available in wide widths but fits wide
Option 3 Comes with additional insoles for a wider fit
For your older daughter who wears a shoe size 4:
Option 1 Available in wide widths
Option 2 Available in wide widths
Let me know if you have any other questions.
Please help ! I am a 76 year old who wears a size 3 wide. I need a pair of black/blue flats that don’t look too childish. Payless used to carry such shoes, but their website indicates that they no longer carry wide widths. Land’s End shoes do not fit at all.
Hello Susan,
Have you already tried this specific shoe style by Hush Puppies? Blue Flats It’s available in wide widths (W) so it might be wide enough for your feet.
I’m hoping you can help me! My 5 year old has extra wide feet apparently! I have tried the shoes in this post, plus wide, extra wide, new balance, stride rite, Hey Dude & others. 9 (so far in total). Do you have any other suggestions? I hate for her to wear crocks all year!
Hello Mandy,
I am happy to help, but I suggest that we start by retrieving your daughter’s exact foot length and shape to make sure that you are ordering the shoes in the correct size: How to Measure Your Kids’ Foot – 2 Simple Steps to Determine Foot Length and Foot Width
Do you have any suggestions for a flower girl big kid size 3.5 or 4 that is very dressy?
Hello Carol,
Take a look at the recommendations below. I have fitted children with extra wide feet in these styles but whether they will work for your daughter’s extra wide feet depends on whether she has a high instep or not:
Option 1
Option 2
Let me know if you have any other questions.
Hi!
Me again. Your site is great, really is. I have not problem what so ever i. Teusting your recommendations.
I just wish, that you could recommend SHOES not sneakers. My little girls can not use sneakers every single day, and all their lives (5.5 & 3.5) they have worn Shoes (not ballerinas, flats, or canvas) and once in a while sneakers.
Have you fitted girls for actual shoes, good ahoes with arch support, heel support? I bet you have, sadly I can tell you that in NYC there’s only one store to get fitt d with good shoes. And once they pass the toddler years they only carry Clarks, stride rite, and sneakers. Another children store only carries sneakers.
If you can guide me in a brand though is not an Amazon product I will be extremely thankful. I hate Clarks cause USA models do not come in wide. keds wides aren’t, stride rite are flimpsy shoes and expensive. I’m breaking my head to find good Shoes for girls. And there are none!! Please help me!
Hello Susy,
Please look at my previous response. I will try to create a post where I describe the best shoes with arch support (not sneakers), I just haven’t found the time to do it yet. One of the shoe brands that I recommend are Beeko and Geox also makes shoes with arch support. I will try to get that post out by the end of the week. Take care and let me know how everything works out!
