Are you having a hard time finding a pair of extra wide shoes for your girl? Do you feel like you try on a whole bunch of different pairs on her feet but you always end up empty handed?

I have been contacted by several parents who want to know which are the best extra wide shoes for girls. Finding a pair of extra wide shoes for children can be a frustrating and time-consuming experience if you don’t know what shoe styles to look for.

Let’s take a look at a couple of examples of children with extra wide feet:

I have helped hundreds of girls with extra wide feet find the perfect pair of shoes for their feet.

Some girls have a high instep in addition to their extra wide feet, and that makes it a lot harder to find shoes that fit. Do you know what the instep of the foot is? The instep is the top part of the foot, and when it’s high, it makes it a lot harder to find shoes that fit. Take a look at the image below to visualize where the instep of the foot is located:

Now let’s take a look at all the extra foot volume that needs to be fitted inside the shoes:

The most common mistake that I see parents make is to assume that just because a shoe style is labeled as extra wide (XW), the shoe is automatically going to fit the shape of their child’s extra wide feet. In addition to being available in extra wide widths, the shoes need to provide 2 important features.

What Makes the Shoes I Recommend Effective for Extra Wide Feet?

✅ The shoes I recommend provide extra depth, which prevents the top part of your kids’ feet from rubbing against the top part of the shoes. Let me show you the difference in depth between 2 shoes that are the same size. Do you notice how the shoe on the right is going to be capable of fitting the shape of a child with a high instep better than the shoe on the left?

✅ The shoes I recommend provide rounder toe-boxes in order to prevent your kids’ toes from rubbing or overlapping against one another. Let me show you the difference between a shoe with a rounder toe-box versus one with a pointier one:

The issue is that shoes don’t come labeled as “extra deep” or with “rounder toe-boxes, but the good news is that I have fitted those type of shoes before and I will help you find them.

I have been working for a specialized children’s shoe store for over 10 years now where we focuses on children with foot and leg problems, but we provide regular shoe fittings as well.  I am familiar with which shoe brands and which shoe styles fit wider than others from having fitted those shoes before.

For the last 5 years I have dedicated myself to helping parents find the perfect pair of shoes for their children online.

I only write reviews of shoes that I have fitted before, otherwise I wouldn’t know how well-made they are, the amount of support that they provide, and how they fit.

In order to allow for growing room, I highly recommend that parents order these shoes a half a size larger than the size their children’s feet measure. This translates to 0.3 inches or 0.7 centimeters of space between your child’s longest toe and the end of the shoes.

Let me show you the most popular questions parents have asked me about the shoes I just recommended:

  •  What Type of Features Do These Shoes Provide?

These shoes all come with a substantial outsole that helps minimize the impact that your kids’ feet and legs take every time they come in contact with the ground. These shoes are also lightweight, flexible, breathable, durable and they come with a firm heel counter —that provides good ankle support—

  • Can my Kids Wear These Shoes as Their Everyday Sneakers?

Yes, these shoes provide good support, allowing your child to play and run comfortably for most of the day.

  • Can I Put These Shoes in the Washing Machine?

No, I don’t recommend putting these shoes in the washing machine as you might end up ruining the shoe materials.

  • Do These Shoes Come with Removable Insoles?

Yes, you can easily remove the original insoles in case you need to fit an orthotic for extra support.

  • Can I Fit an Orthotic Inside These Shoes?

Yes, these shoes provide extra depth, meaning that the orthotic will fit deeply inside the shoes, and won’t give your child the impression that the feet are coming out of the shoes.

  • Do These Shoe Provide Good Traction?

Yes, these shoe styles provide excellent traction. The thread on these shoes will minimize the likelihood of your child from sipping and falling down.

  • Are These Shoes Durable?

Yes, the shoes also come with a reinforceable toe-box in the front, which helps prevent your kids’ from destroying the front part of the shoes even if they like to drag their toes as they walk.

  1. Hi!
Me again. Your site is great, really is. I have not problem what so ever i. Teusting your recommendations.

I just wish, that you could recommend SHOES not sneakers. My little girls can not use sneakers every single day, and all their lives (5.5 & 3.5) they have worn Shoes (not ballerinas, flats, or canvas) and once in a while sneakers.

Have you fitted girls for actual shoes, good ahoes with arch support, heel support? I bet you have, sadly I can tell you that in NYC there’s only one store to get fitt d with good shoes. And once they pass the toddler years they only carry Clarks, stride rite, and sneakers. Another children store only carries sneakers.
If you can guide me in a brand though is not an Amazon product I will be extremely thankful. I hate Clarks cause USA models do not come in wide. keds wides aren’t, stride rite are flimpsy shoes and expensive. I’m breaking my head to find good Shoes for girls. And there are none!! Please help me!

    • Hello Susy,

Please look at my previous response. I will try to create a post where I describe the best shoes with arch support (not sneakers), I just haven’t found the time to do it yet. One of the shoe brands that I recommend are Beeko and Geox also makes shoes with arch support. I will try to get that post out by the end of the week. Take care and let me know how everything works out!
