How to Fit 3/4 Length Orthotics in Children’s Shoes – A Quick Hack for Better Comfort
Does your child wear 3/4-length orthotics and you’re unsure how to fit them properly inside their shoes? Many parents wonder whether 3/4-length orthotics should sit on top of the original insoles or if those insoles need to be removed. In most cases—about 80% of the time—3/4-length orthotics can be placed directly on top of the shoe’s existing insoles. However, if your child says the shoes feel too tight or uncomfortable, removing the original insoles can instantly create more space and improve the fit. As a specialized children’s shoe fitter with many years of experience, I’ll show you exactly how to fit 3/4-length orthotics inside kids’ shoes for the best comfort and support.
When Keeping the Original Insoles Is Perfectly Fine
In most cases, 3/4-length orthotics fit comfortably on top of the existing insoles in kids’ shoes. If the shoe still closes easily and your child feels comfortable, you don’t need to remove anything.
When to Remove the Original Insoles for a Better Orthotic Fit
Sometimes keeping the original insoles in place isn’t the best option. If your child has a “tricky” foot shape—like wide or extra-wide feet or a high instep—removing the original insoles can create extra space for a more comfortable fit.
Another key reason to remove them is if your child’s heels slip out of the shoes. By taking out the original insoles, the 3/4-length orthotic and your child’s feet can sit deeper and more securely in the shoe, providing better stability, support, and comfort.

If you remove the original insole and place the 3/4-length orthotic inside the shoes, there won’t be any cushioning under your child’s toes, which can cause rubbing or discomfort. To prevent this, follow the steps below to trim the original insole and leave the front portion inside the shoe. This way, your child’s toes stay comfortable while the orthotic fits properly in the heel and arch area.

See It in Action: Step-by-Step Video on Fitting 3/4-Length Orthotics
Sometimes it’s easier to understand orthotic fitting when you can actually see it in action. In my YouTube video, I walk parents through step-by-step instructions on how to correctly fit 3/4-length orthotics inside children’s shoes.
Can 3/4-Length Orthotics Fit Inside Any Shoes?
One of the biggest advantages of 3/4-length orthotics is their versatility—they fit comfortably in most types of shoes, not just sneakers. They work well in casual shoes, dress shoes, and even some boots, making it easier to support your child’s feet throughout the day.
That said, not all shoes are created equal—some are deeper, while others offer less room. After fitting many different brands and styles at the children’s shoe store where I work, I’ve learned which shoes consistently provide a comfortable fit for orthotics. You can check out a full list of my approved everyday sneakers for children who wear orthotics in a separate resource I’ve created.
I forgot to mention that 3/4-length orthotics a great solution for shoes that don’t come with removable insoles.
