Sweaty feet is an issue that spans all age groups. It is normal for the feet of some children and adults to perspire more than others. The issues come when excessive foot perspiration is in place since it can create foot and shoe discomfort. Wearing footwear with no breath-ability, tight fitting shoes, and wearing the wrong type of socks are three main causes for this excessive foot perspiration.
Parents should avoid buying low quality shoes made out of plastic, rubber or polyurethane. Investing in a good quality pair of shoes with breathable materials such as leather, cloth, canvas or newer mesh materials is highly recommended! I will show you what steps to take if your child is suffering from sweaty feet, and the most effective way to get rid of it!
I have been working at a children’s shoe store for over 5 years now, and we specialize in children that have foot or leg problems. Some of these issues involve flat feet, pronation, or knock knees. We see hundreds of children a day and we are experts in what we do. I decided to create a post on how to stop smelly feet because a lot of parents ask me this exact same question at the children’s shoe store that I work for.
In order to solve your kids’ foot odor issue, we MUST first identify where is it coming from.
Is Moisture On My Child’s Foot Causing His Feet To Smell?
Moisture on the foot can create several problems, such as blisters, the growth of odor-causing bacteria, and fungus, such as athlete’s foot. You should ALWAYS switch your children’s shoes and socks if they get wet as soon as possible. Avoid buying synthetic socks since they do not absorb any moisture or allow the foot to breathe properly.
You will notice that a lot of socks have some percentage of synthetic fiber in them and that is not the end of the world, but I always advise against synthetic materials if your feet tend to sweat a lot. The fibers that absorb the most moisture are wool and merino.
I created a post where I explain the importance that socks play in keeping your kids’ feet healthy. The post also explains how to make sure you are getting the right sock size and what are the best socks for sweaty feet.
The post is called:
Why Are Socks Important To Prevent Smelly Feet?
Socks act as a barrier against irritation and infection, and they play a key role in a healthy foot for children and adults. If your child is dealing with sweaty, smelly feet (you can tell by the smell or by checking if his/her socks feel damp after they come back from school), start by talking a look at the fabric content of the sock.
Make sure the socks are made out of high quality materials, such as cotton and nylon. Cotton allows the foot to breathe while the nylon gives strength and shape to the sock. These combination will wick away the moisture. Wool is also an excellent fiber since it allows the foot to breathe and it wicks the moisture away.
Stop Sweaty Feet – Your Child Can Develop Serious Foot Issues!
Did you know that excessive sweating can create serious problems to your kids’ feet?
When our kids’ feet sweat excessively it can lead to secondary infections and several skin problems to their feet.
Some of these complications include:
- The constant moisture in our feet makes them more vulnerable since the skin might become wrinkled and cracked, which can cause the feet to become tender and painful.
- The feet becomes itchy which is often caused by athlete’s foot.
- Blisters might start appearing, since sore skin leads to blisters.
- Fungal infections.
- Social and emotional effects such as stress. Sweaty, smelly feet can easily cause embarrassing situations to your child.
Here are some guidelines on how to prevent sweaty feet:
- Wear socks that absorb moisture such as wool and merino socks.
- High quality socks with high percentage of cotton and nylon is also recommended.
- Wear quality footwear with breathable materials such as leather, cloth, canvas or newer mesh materials.
- Wear the right shoe size and avoid tight fitting shoes.
- Wash and dry your feet everyday.
- Change your kids’ socks as soon as they start feeling wet.
I am a firm believer that the type of shoes and socks that we choose for our children WILL have a direct impact on how sweaty their feet are and how bad their feet smell. It is important to choose shoes with breathable materials in order for our kids’ feet to breathe properly.
I wrote a post where I describe the best shoes for a child that has sweaty, smelly feet. The post describes the most breathable children’ shoes that are also machine washable. The name of the post is:
