Have you ever heard of Keen sandals? They are the #1 choice for parents who want to provide their kids with a pair of supportive and durable sandals.
Keen sandals are so popular because it allows children to wear them for longer periods of time, they are the most versatile sandals in the market.
Summer time is approaching and children are ready to head out and play. It is important to provide your children with supportive sandals that they can safely and comfortably play and run around with.
Parents love that the sandals are practically indestructible, provide great support (specially for those children that have foot problems), and have great traction, which means children can wear them for different activities.
Among this shoe brand, there are certain sandal styles that will provide more support and will fit better than others. The good news is that I know exactly which styles they are because I have fitted them before.
I have been working for a specialized children’s shoe store for the last ten years, where we specialize in children with foot and leg problems, but we provide regular shoe fittings as well. I have fitted thousands of shoes and I am familiar with which shoe brands and which shoe styles are better than others.
Keen shoes have been the subject of much fashion debate. They may not be the prettiest shoes you will provide for your child, but they are unquestionably the perfect summer shoe for outdoor activities such as boating, hiking, going to the beach, or riding a bicycle.
I will show you a selection of the best keen sandals for children, but let me first show you what features these sandals will provide and how you can make sure that you provide your children with the correct sandal size.
Keen Sandals for Kids – Beloved by Men, Women, and Children ☀️✅
There are certain parts of the world where people experience 7 or 8 months of summer. In the US, summer in Texas is really long and the sandal season is literally 7 to 8 months.
Wouldn’t it be great if children could wear a sandal that provides them with support and stability to run around for most of the day?
I always explain to parents how children should still alternate and wear their sneakers, since the only thing that Keen sandals do NOT provide is ankle support. This is because sandals do NOT come with a firm heel counter (back part of the shoe). The picture below shows you where the heel counter of the sandal is:
You can also notice in the picture below how the sandal provides good support since it comes with a very thick and substantial sole. This sole will provide shock absorption and minimize the impact that your kids’ feet and legs take every time they come in contact with the ground.
The sandal also has a rubber toe-box which makes it practically indestructible. It doesn’t matter if your child likes to drag his/her feet, the rubber toe-box is practically indestructible.
Why are Keen Sandals so Popular? – Unbeatable Versatility
There are 3 main reasons for their popularity:
- Fit: Keen sandals are extremely comfortable and will fit a child with narrow, medium, wide, or extra wide feet (depending on the style that you choose).
- Support: Keen sandals provide shock absorption, which will keep your kids’ feet and legs healthy by minimizing the impact that your kids’ feet take every time they come in contact with the ground.
- Durability: Keen sandals are practically indestructible.
Keen sandals are the most well-made functional and all terrain sandal that I have ever fitted. The footbed on Keen sandals is wonderfully molded and cushioned; they fit the foot with ease.
These sandals are a MUST when it comes to every day summer wear. There is no sandal out there that can replace them in terms of versatility, support, and sturdiness
.Keen prices range from US$ 45.00 to US$ 53.00. You might find them cheaper if you purchase an older style. I believe this is a great price, considering that if fitted properly, your child will wear them for the whole season and more, if you live in a place with predominant summer weather.
How Do Keen Sandals Fit? – Let’s Find Out!
I always recommend to parents to take their kids to be properly fitted for shoes at their local children’s shoe store. If you don’t have a children shoe store in your area, you should consider travelling to your closest one! Seriously, parents travel 30 -45 minutes to come to our store. It is true that we are one of the best children’s shoe stores in the country and we do specialize with children that have foot problems.
Keen sandals have a nice round covered toe-box, which helps protect your little ones’ toes. Keen sandals are available in whole sizes only. So, if your child measures a foot size 10 1/2, then you will get him/her a size 11. If your child measures a foot size 10, then you will need to get the size 11 (since the sandals are not available in half sizes) You will always round up.
The sandals have a velcro strap at the top so your child can control how tight or lose he wants to make them. Now, if your child has a wide foot, I recommend you purchase the Keen Newport since it is the style with the widest toe-box. The Keen Seacamp runs in the narrower width, so if your child has a narrow width, that will be the style you want to get for your child.
Keen sandals come with a particular type of closure called lock laces, which means that your child only needs to push a button to make the sandals tighter, and push on it again to make the sandals loser.
Below, you can see a picture of how a lock lace looks like:
Have you ever heard of lock laces before? They are a toggle lace that is great for children who don’t know how to tie their shoes yet. I actually wrote a post where I describe the best lock laces for children:
The Best Keen Sandals for Children – ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Now that you know what features Keen sandals provide, let me show you a selection fo the best Keen sandals for children that I have fitted before:
This first selection of Keen sandals will fit a child with medium, wide or extra wide feet:
All of these shoe styles fit “true to size”, which means that you need to get a half a size longer of the size that your child measured at the standard foot measuring scale (Brannock device) in order to allow for growing room. Keep in mind that these sandals don’t come in half sizes, so if your child is in between sizes always sized them up so they can wear them for the whole summer.
This second selection of Keen sandals will fit a child with narrow or medium feet:
If your child has NARROW FEET, please choose the style named “MOXIE”.
Lastly, I have heard from several parents that these sandals are the ONLY shoes that their children can grow out of before they get ruined!
There you have it, the perfect all-around kid’s summer sandal.
Some customers have told me that they are not happy with how Keen sandals look, but they got them anyway since their pure function is perfect for children or adults who live active lifestyles.
Why Do Keens Smell So Bad? A Solution To The Stinky Smell!
I have heard several parents comment about how bad Keen sandals start to smell after their children wore them for a couple of months. Imagine your child wearing them most of the day throughout the summer, there is a high chance that the sandal will start smelling. Some parents raised a concern that it is really hard to get rid of the smell. Unfortunately, there are no products in the market right now that can help get rid of the smell, so DO NOT waste any money in products thinking that they will help.
I will tell you the SECRET to remove the smell from these sandals. It is a home based product secret: Use baking soda and vinegar and the smell will be gone! Please make sure you rub it throughout the sandal, especially in the neoprene part.
This is the most effective solution in order to get rid of the smell. I have spoken with several parents who have tried my home-based secret, and they said it worked perfectly. Try it and let me know how it worked out for you in the comments section below.
Is Your Child Flat Footed and Overpronating? – Sandals with Arch Support!
If your child has feet issues such as overpronation, flat feet, or low muscle tone, then this is the type of sandal that will provide them with the most support. Several parents that have children who wear orthotics always ask me what type of shoes they can wear over the summer. They have invested time and money in orthotics and they want to make sure that during the summer, their children can run and play in a sandal that will provide them with the best support.
If you look closely at how Keen sandals are made, you will realize that they have the structure of a sneaker. They are the most supportive sandals in the market right now. This does not mean that children can wear them all day during the summer; they still MUST alternate with their sneakers.
