Best Sandals for Kids with Foot Pain – Extra Arch and Heel Support

Last updated: June 2026 | By Juan Valenzuela, Certified Children’s Shoe Fitter

Foot pain in children is more common than most parents realize — and it gets significantly worse during the summer months when kids are spending long hours in flat, flimsy sandals that provide little to no support. If your child frequently complains of sore feet, tired legs, or heel pain, the sandals they are wearing are likely a big part of the problem.

As a certified children’s shoe fitter with over 10 years of experience, I have seen firsthand how the right pair of supportive sandals can transform a child’s comfort, posture, and willingness to stay active. In this guide I will explain exactly what features matter, introduce an exciting new sandal launching soon, and give you my top recommendations for kids with foot pain.

Why Most Kids’ Sandals Make Foot Pain Worse

Most children’s sandals sold at mainstream retailers are designed with style and price in mind — not foot health. The result is flat insoles with no arch support, outsoles that bend in the middle rather than at the ball of the foot, and no heel containment whatsoever.

For a child with healthy foot posture, this may not cause immediate problems. But for a child with flat feet, overpronation, plantar fasciitis, Sever’s disease, or any other foot condition, spending hours in flat unsupportive sandals can significantly worsen their symptoms.

What Makes a Sandal Truly Supportive?

When I evaluate sandals for children with foot pain, I look for two non-negotiable features:

1. Stable Base of Support The outsole must provide a firm, stable foundation that keeps the foot in a neutral position. A supportive outsole prevents excessive inward rolling (overpronation) and reduces the impact of each step. Quick test: press down on the midsole from the side — it should feel firm, not soft and squishy. Gently bend the sandal — it should flex at the ball of the foot, not in the middle.

2. Targeted Cushioning and Support Below the Heel Extra padding in the heel area absorbs shock and distributes pressure evenly across the foot. This is especially important for children with heel pain, Sever’s disease, or plantar fasciitis — conditions where the heel takes the most impact during walking and running.

Before and After: The Impact of Supportive Sandals

I always share before-and-after images with parents because nothing communicates the difference better than seeing it directly. When a child with flat feet stands barefoot, the arches collapse and the feet roll inward — overpronation at its most visible. When the same child wears one of the supportive sandals I recommend, the feet are noticeably straighter and better aligned.

Now take a look at the same child wearing one of the supportive sandals I recommend. See how much straighter and more aligned the feet appear?

Remember how I mentioned that not all sandals offer the same support? Take a look at the same child in a different pair—notice how the feet aren’t as straight as in the previous image?

The difference is not subtle. And it is not just cosmetic — better alignment means less strain on the ankles, knees, hips, and lower back throughout the entire day.

Coming Soon — Arch-Up Sandal by Footlogics

I am very excited to introduce a brand-new sandal launching within the next month: the Arch-Up by Footlogics. This is one of the most clinically thoughtful children’s sandals I have come across, and it is designed specifically to address foot pain and poor posture in an active, lightweight sandal format.

Here is what makes the Arch-Up stand out from everything else on this list:

Cushioning Footbed with Proprioceptive Bubble Pattern The footbed features a proprioceptive bubble pattern — small textured nodules that stimulate sensory feedback from the ground with every step. This enhances balance, coordination, and body awareness, and is especially beneficial for children with flat feet who rely on compensatory movement patterns.

Metatarsal Raise A metatarsal raise supports the forefoot and helps distribute pressure evenly across the ball of the foot — reducing metatarsal pain and fatigue during long periods of activity. This feature is rarely seen in children’s sandals and makes the Arch-Up stand out clinically.

Biomechanical Arch Support Not just a cushioned bump — a true biomechanical arch support that guides the foot toward a more neutral position and actively reduces excessive pronation.

Deep Heel Cup for Rearfoot Stability The deep heel cup provides firm rearfoot containment, stabilizing the calcaneus and preventing the heel from collapsing inward. This is one of the most important features for children with heel pain, overpronation, and flat feet.

35 Degrees of Real Arch Support A measurable 35 degrees of genuine arch correction — not token padding but meaningful, clinical-grade support in a sandal format.

3 Velcro Straps Three fully adjustable Velcro straps allow for a precise, customizable fit across a wide range of foot shapes and instep heights.

Anti-Slip Rubber Pads Strategically placed anti-slip rubber pads on the outsole provide reliable traction on all surfaces — indoor floors, outdoor paths, beach boardwalks, and playground equipment.

Lightweight Midsole Despite all these support features, the Arch-Up remains lightweight — critical for active children who need a sandal that moves with them, not against them.

Available in 3 Colors

The Arch-Up by Footlogics is not yet available but will be launching within the next month. I will update this article with the purchase link as soon as it becomes available. To be notified when it launches, reach out to me at customerservice@fittingchildrenshoes.com.

How to Find the Right Sandal Size

Most sandals come only in whole sizes, so here is my simple sizing rule:

  • If your child measures a size 10 in sneakers, order a size 11 in sandals
  • If your child measures a size 10.5 in sneakers, order a size 11 in sandals

This ensures enough room without the sandal becoming a tripping hazard. For sandals with individual sizing tips above, follow those recommendations as they may vary by brand.

Can My Child Wear Orthotics Inside Their Sandals?

This is one of the most common questions I get from parents. The short answer is no — standard sandals are not designed to accommodate orthotics, and placing orthotics inside a sandal that was not built for them can affect fit, function, and the effectiveness of the orthotic itself.

If your child’s podiatrist or physical therapist has prescribed orthotics and also wants them wearing sandals, I recommend the orthopedic sandals on this list — particularly the Agnes by Memo — which are specifically engineered to provide orthotic-level support without a separate insert.
