Best Shoes for Kids’ Summer Camp 2026 – One Pair for Every Activity
Last updated: May 2026 | By Juan Valenzuela, Certified Children’s Shoe Fitter
Summer camp season is here, and one of the most common questions I get from parents this time of year is: “How many pairs of shoes does my child actually need for camp?”
The honest answer is two — a good pair of sneakers and a good pair of sandals. That’s it. Many families show up to camp with hiking boots, athletic sneakers, flip-flops, and sports shoes, spending far more than they need to. With the right shoes, your child can handle hiking, sports, outdoor activities, and water play without needing a separate pair for each one.
As a certified children’s shoe fitter with over 10 years of experience, I put together this guide to help you find the most durable, versatile, and supportive shoes for kids heading to summer camp — options that can do it all without wearing out after a week.

How Many Shoes Does Your Child Need for Summer Camp?
Two pairs is the sweet spot for most summer camps:
Pair 1 — A durable, versatile sneaker for hiking, sports, running, and everyday camp activities. This is the shoe your child will wear the most, so durability and support are the top priorities.
Pair 2 — A supportive sandal for water activities, free time, and any situation where a closed-toe shoe isn’t needed. I recommend Keen sandals for this role — they are far more supportive than flip-flops or Crocs, dry quickly, and can handle light hiking on their own.
The two pairs work together so your child always has a dry pair ready while the other airs out — a small but important detail for a week-long or overnight camp.
What to Look for in Summer Camp Sneakers
Not all sneakers are built for summer camp. Here are the four features I look for when recommending camp shoes:
Durable construction. Camp is hard on shoes. Look for reinforced toe boxes — ideally rubber-capped — stitching that won’t come apart after a week of outdoor use, and materials that hold up to dirt, water, and rough terrain. One of the shoes I recommend below has a practically indestructible rubber toe cap that holds up better than anything else I have tested.

Sturdy, non-slip soles. The sole needs to be thick enough to absorb impact, grippy enough to handle wet grass and uneven terrain, and flexible enough not to restrict natural foot movement. A flat, thin sole is not appropriate for camp activities.

Breathability. Feet sweat significantly during summer activities. A breathable mesh upper — ideally reinforced for durability — keeps feet cool and dry, reduces blisters, and prevents the odor and fungal issues that come with hot, damp feet trapped in non-breathable shoes.

Adequate cushioning. Your child will be on their feet all day. Press on the midsole — it should feel firm and supportive, not soft and squishy. A well-cushioned midsole absorbs impact during running and jumping and distributes pressure evenly across the foot.

The Best Sandal for Summer Camp — Keen Newport H2
For the second pair, I consistently recommend the Keen Newport H2 for summer camp. It is water-friendly, dries quickly, and has a closed toe box that protects feet during active play — making it far safer and more supportive than flip-flops or Crocs. The adjustable hook-and-loop straps provide a secure, customizable fit, and the non-marking rubber outsole grips well on both wet and dry surfaces.
The Newport H2 can handle light hiking on its own, which means it doubles as a backup activity shoe if your child’s sneakers get soaked and need time to dry.
Tips for Making Shoes Last Through Summer Camp
Even the most durable shoes can wear out faster than expected without proper care. Here are a few tips I give to parents every summer:
Rotate daily. Alternating between sneakers and sandals each day gives each pair time to air out and dry completely, which significantly extends the life of both.
Check the fit before camp. Children’s feet can grow up to three sizes per year. Shoes that fit in March may be too small by June. Check the fit before packing — there should be about a thumb’s width of space between your child’s longest toe and the front of the shoe. Here is how to check if your child has outgrown their shoes.
Pack the right socks. Moisture-wicking socks make a significant difference in keeping feet dry and blister-free during high-activity days. Avoid cotton socks for camp — they hold moisture and increase the risk of blisters.
Label everything. This is practical advice, not shoe advice — but labeled shoes come home much more reliably than unlabeled ones.

What About Kids with Foot Conditions?
If your child has flat feet, overpronation, low muscle tone, or wears orthotics, choosing the right camp shoes requires a little extra attention. The Keen Targhee and Merrell Moab Speed 2 are both excellent options for children with foot conditions because of their firm heel counters and supportive construction.

Frequently Asked Questions
No. Crocs and flip-flops provide no meaningful support and are not safe for active outdoor use. I recommend Keen sandals as the supportive alternative — they are water-friendly, have closed toe boxes, and provide the support children need during camp activities.
Durability and waterproofing. Summer camp puts shoes through more wear in one week than many kids experience in a month of school. Look for reinforced rubber toe caps, waterproof or water-friendly construction, non-slip outsoles, and secure closures.
The Keen Targhee and Merrell Moab Speed 2 are both excellent options for children with flat feet because of their firm heel counters and supportive construction. If your child wears orthotics, make sure to choose a shoe with a removable insole.
