Do you have a child with flat feet that is complaining about foot and leg pain? Are you having a hard time finding a pair of supportive sandals for your child to wear during the summer?
Finding a pair of supportive sandals can be a frustrating and time-consuming experience if you don’t know what shoe styles to look for. Most sandals don’t provide any support whatsoever, which can lead to your child having to deal with foot and leg pain during the summer.
Children impose an enormous amount of stress on their feet and legs, and the most effective way to minimize the impact that your kids’ feet and legs take every time they come in contact with the ground is by wearing supportive footwear. In addition, wearing a pair of supportive sandals will help align your kids’ feet and legs and allow them to walk and run straighter.
When children have flat feet, their feet collapse, which throws their whole body out of alignment. Let’s take a look at a picture of a child that is flat footed. Do you notice how the child’s feet are turning inwards since there is no arch to prevent the feet from collapsing?
Maybe the picture looks familiar since you might have a child at home that is also flat footed.
Something so simple such as providing your children with the correct pair of shoes can help straighten their feet and legs, and allow them to walk and run straighter.
Let me prove this to you…
Let’s first take a look at a picture of a flat-footed child.
Now let’s take a look at a picture of the same child wearing a pair of supportive shoes. Do you notice how the feet are not collapsing anymore? Since the shoes come with a substantial sole that provides arch support, the features of the shoes are preventing the feet from collapsing.
A pair of substantial and supportive sandals will also help prevent your child’s feet from collapsing and turning inwards. The issue is that there are very few kids’ sandal styles that come with a substantial sole with arch support. The good news is that I will help you find them!
I have been working for a specialized children’s shoe store for over 10 years now, and I know everything that relates to children’s shoes and the way they fit. This is a specialized shoe store that focuses on children with foot and leg problems, but we provide regular shoe fittings as well. We carry some of the most supportive children’s shoes and orthotics, and I am familiar with which shoe brands and which shoe styles are better than others.
For the last 3 years, I have dedicated myself to helping parents find their kids’ shoes online.
Have you ever heard of Keen sandals? They are the most supportive type of sandals for children. In addition to being supportive, the sandals are also lightweight, flexible, durable, and they provide great traction. However, not all Keen sandals provide the same amount of support, since there are certain styles that are more supportive than others. The Newport style is the one that comes with a more substantial and supportive sole, but it won’t fit all type of feet.
Let’s take a look at the difference in support between two different Keen sandal styles. Do you notice how the sandals in the first picture have a much flatter sole than the sandal style in the second picture?
The Newport style has a much more thicker, substantial sole.
Children with narrow and extra wide feet will not be able to fit in the Newport styles. However, if your child has narrow or extra wide feet, I will provide you with the best alternatives.
Did you know that Keen sandals come with a footbed that provides an internal support mechanism which is anatomically engineered to provide excellent arch support and cradle the natural contours of the foot?
I will provide you with a selection of the best sandals for kids with flat feet shortly, but first I want to dig a little deeper in what features these sandals will provide and how you can figure out your child’s foot size from home.
Sandals for Kids with Flat Feet – The 5 Most Important Features!
These are the 5 most important features that Keen sandals will provide in order to keep your child’s feet and legs healthy:
- Substantial Sole: This feature will prevent your child’s feet from collapsing and will allow your child to walk and run straighter. A substantial sole will also attenuate the impact that your kids’ feet and legs take every time they come in contact with the ground, allowing your child to be able to wear these sandals for longer periods of time (I still recommend your child switching to a pair of sneakers throughout the day). Do you notice how thick and supportive the sole of the sandal is?
- Lightweight and Flexible: These features will prevent your kid’s feet and legs from easily getting tired. Besides, depending on the age of your child, he/she might not have the strength to bend a harder sole.
- Traction: This feature will minimize the likelihood of your child slipping and falling down, especially when walking on wet, slippery surfaces.
- Fast Drying: Keen sandals come with a quick-drying webbing that is perfect when kids are in and out of the water and everywhere else.
- Easy On & Off: The elastic cord lace and adjustable hook and loop strap allows children to put them on and take them off by themselves.
Keen sandals can take anything your child can dish out!
However, I am always emphasizing to parents that it doesn’t matter how many features a particular shoe style provides, if the shoes don’t fit the shape of your child’s feet perfectly, your child won’t get any of the benefits that the shoes have to offer.
If the sandals are too long, your child’s foot will end up moving too much inside the sandals, and that constant movement and rubbing might lead to blisters. On the other hand, if the sandals are too short, you will end up cramping your kids’ toes and make them rub against each other or the side of the sandals, which will also create foot issues.
I always recommend parents to take their children to their local children’s shoe store that they trust, the issue is that most stores have been closing down and parents need to end up buying their kids’ shoes online. There is nothing wrong with this, but you must know your child’s exact foot size in order to know what size to order.
I created a map that showcases the best fitting children’s shoe stores by state, so I suggest you start by taking a look at that map:
If after looking at that map you still can’t seem to identify a shoe store in your area, then proceed to taking a look at an article along with a video I created that describes the simplest, yet most effective way to figure out your child’s foot size from home:
Now that you know what features these Keen sandals styles will provide to your child’s feet and how to figure out your child’s foot size from home, you are ready to take a look at the best sandals for kids with flat feet.
The Best Sandals for Kids with Flat Feet ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Please keep in mind that I only write reviews of sandals that I have fitted before, otherwise I wouldn’t know how well-made they are, the amount of support that they provide, and how they fit.
Here you can find a selection of the best sandals for kids with flat feet. These styles will fit a child with medium or wide feet only.
The selection of sandals below will only fit a child with a narrow or a medium width foot:
All of these Keen sandal styles fit “true to size” which means that you need to go a half a size to a whole size longer of the size that your child measures in the standard foot measuring scale (Brannock Device), in order to allow for growing room. It’s important to allow for the proper amount of growing room (3/8 of an inch) for your child to grow into the sandals and be able to wear them through the whole summer season.
Extra Wide Sandals for Kids with Flat Feet – Do They Exist?
If your child happens to have extra wide feet and needs a pair of sandals that provides good arch support, then there is another shoe brand that we need to rely on. The sandal I have in mind is made by the shoe company Merrell, and the style is actually available in wide widths.
I know this sandal will fit the shape of a child with extra wide feet because I have fitted it before. In addition to being available in wide widths, this sandal is also deep, which is great if your child has a high instep as well.
The sandal is not as supportive as the Keen sandals styles that I described above, but it provides really good support as well.
If you provide your children with a pair of sandals that are too narrow, you will end up creating all sort of issues to their feet, such as blisters, calluses, and corns.
I describe the best sandals for kid with extra wide feet in another article called:
Now that you know which are the best sandals for kids with flat feet, you are ready to keep their feet and legs healthy during the summer season.
