Best School Uniform Shoes for Boys: Leather, Sneaker, and Casual

School Shoes · Written by Juan Valenzuela, Certified Children’s Shoe Fitter · Updated June 2026

School uniform shoes for boys are harder to find than most parents expect — and harder than for girls. The girls’ side of the uniform shoe market has Mary Janes, T-straps, and patent flats in every width. The boys’ side has brown oxfords, black loafers, and Sperry boat shoes — and finding any of those in a wide or extra wide width, at a price that makes sense for shoes that will be worn five days a week, takes more research than it should.

Below I’ll cover the three categories of boys’ school uniform shoes — leather dress, smart casual, and athletic sneakers — and share the seven styles I recommend most often, organized so you can match the right type to your son’s school’s requirements.

Check Your School’s Policy Before Ordering

Boys’ school uniform requirements vary more than girls’ — some schools specify leather only, others allow smart casual boat shoes or loafers, and a growing number accept solid black or white athletic sneakers. Before ordering any shoe on this list, confirm:

Color requirement: Black and brown are the most common. Several styles below come in both — I’ve noted color options under each listing.

Material requirement: If the policy says “leather,” check whether faux leather is accepted. If it says “leather or leather-look,” synthetic is fine.

Closure requirement: Some schools prohibit slip-ons; others require Velcro for younger grades. I’ve flagged the slip-on styles below so you can filter them out if needed.

Sneaker policy: If your school allows solid black or white athletic shoes, the New Balance styles below are the strongest options for support and durability.

Boys With Wide Feet and Uniform Requirements

The most common fitting problem I see in boys’ school shoes is exactly what Jemma Warren, one of our readers, described: a boy with wide feet or a high instep who doesn’t like any of the standard dress shoe options available in his size. The overlap between “wide widths available” and “passes the dress code” is genuinely small for boys.

The honest answer is that the options are limited — but they exist. The 990v6 and Fresh Foam 650v1 by New Balance cover wide and extra wide in a black or white athletic style. The Dirty Buck by Footmates covers wide in a tan dress shoe. The Gamefish by Sperry covers wide in a casual boat shoe. If your son needs wide widths in a strict leather dress shoe, the Dirty Buck is the only reliable option on this list.

Not every style below comes in labeled wide or extra wide widths — some fit wide feet naturally through their construction. I’ve noted the fit range under each listing so you can match the right shoe to your son’s foot shape before ordering. Disclosure: This post contains affiliate links. 1. Gamefish by Sperry. A genuine leather boat shoe that meets most smart casual and Catholic school dress code requirements — the laces stay tied significantly better than standard round laces, and the memory foam footbed makes it one of the most comfortable all-day options on this list. The tan colorway meets most “Sperry Top-Sider” specifications in Catholic school dress code catalogs.

Measure Your Son’s Foot Before Ordering

If you’re unsure of your son’s foot length, width, or whether he has a high instep, my virtual shoe fitting guide walks you through measuring all three at home in two steps.

Need a Specific Recommendation?

Every boy’s foot is different. If your son’s school has specific requirements not covered above, or if he has a foot condition that makes uniform compliance harder, feel free to email me with his measurements and dress code details. I’ll give you a direct recommendation.
