Best Shoes for Kids with Six Toes – Extra Deep and Rounder Toe-Boxes

Are you having the hardest time finding a pair of shoes for your child with six toes? Do you feel like every single shoe style that you try for his/her feet is too narrow? To accommodate your child’s extra toe we need a pair of shoes that provide extra depth and rounder toe-box.

If your child was born with six toes then you should know by now how challenging it can be to find a pair of shoes that fits.

I have been working for a specialized children’s shoe store for over the last 10 years now, where we specialize in helping children with “complicated” foot shapes as well as foot and leg problems, but we provide regular shoe fittings as well. I have helped children find shoes to accommodate their different kinds of foot issues, from being flat-footed to having knock-knees, to having six toes on one or both feet.

I have helped a few children who needed shoes to accommodate their feet with six toes, and I believe I can help your child too. Below you can find some examples of children with six toes:

You must avoid shoes that are come with pointy toe-boxes. Shoes that are too narrow for a child with six toes can lead to several foot issues such as blisters, calluses, ingrown toenails, and corns, just to name a few.

The process of fitting them in a pair of shoes is not that much different than that of a child who has five toes, but we must consider the extra room that we need in the shoes for that extra toe. We need to prevent those toes from getting cramped inside the shoes or overlap with the other toes.

There are two important features that the shoes must provide to prevent this from happening. The shoes must provide extra depth and come with round toe-boxes.

✅ Shoes with extra depth help prevent the child’s toes from rubbing against the top of the shoes:

✅ Shoes with rounder toe-boxes help prevent your kids’ toes from overlapping one another:

You might be wondering… How can you find shoes that provide these two features if shoes don’t come labeled as “extra deep” or with “rounder toe-boxes”?

The good news is that I know exactly which kids’ shoe styles provide these two features, and I will help you find them!

Finding a pair of shoes for a child with six toes can be a frustrating and time-consuming experience, but I am here to make that whole process easier.

I have noticed how there are certain shoe styles made by the company New Balance that are best for fitting children with wide or extra wide feet. This is my go-to shoe brand for children who have really wide feet since it tends to fit the widest feet. Remember that your child’s extra toe is taking up extra space inside the shoe.

I will provide you with a selection of the best shoes and socks for a child who has six toes, but let’s first make sure that you know your child’s exact foot size. If you don’t know your child’s exact foot size you won’t know what shoe size to order online.

Are You 100% Sure of Your Child’s Foot Size? – Let’s Find Out!

I always recommend parents to take their children to their local children’s shoe store to have their shoes properly fitted. However, parents contact me daily asking me how they can measure their kids’ foot size from home since they don’t have a local shoe store that they trust. If you identify with this, start by reading an article I wrote where I describe the simplest, yet most effective way to figure out your child’s foot size from home:

How to Measure Your Kids Foot – 2 Simple Steps to Determine Foot Length and Foot Width

In that article I help parents determine their child’s exact foot size and whether the child has narrow, medium, wide, or extra wide feet. I also will be able to tell you whether your child has a high instep or not.

Now that you know how to provide your children with the correct shoe size and what features the shoes I recommend provide for a child with six toes, let me show you a selection of the best shoes for kids with six toes.

I only review shoe styles that I have fitted before since that is the only way for me to tell how well-made the shoes are, the amount of support that they provide, and how they fit.

To allow for growing room, I highly recommend that parents order these shoes half a size larger than their child’s current foot size. This translates to 3/16 of an inch or 0.5 centimeters of space between your child’s longest toe and the end of the shoes.

New Balance tends to be the most consistent shoe brand when it comes to manufacturing shoes that provide extra depth and come with the roundest toe-boxes.

The shoes I described above are the best fitting shoes for a child who has six toes. The combination of extra depth of the shoe and the rounder toe-box, makes it the perfect shoe style for children who have six toes.

Please don’t forget about the importance of wearing the correct type of socks. Wearing seamless socks and the right pair of shoes will guarantee that your kids’ feet with six toes remain healthy.

The first step before you start looking for shoes is to take into consideration the type of socks that will provide for your child. This is one of the most important yet overlooked steps. A pair of seamless socks will be ideal for a child who has an extra toe, since it will allow for extra room around the toes, preventing them from cramping against one another.

The Best Socks for Kids with Six Toes ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Wearing a pair of seamless socks can make a huge difference for a child that has six toes.

The greatest advantage is that it will allow your child’s toes to spread out comfortably and prevent them from overlapping against one another. It will also allow extra room in the socks for the toes, without the socks bunching up or being too big. Your child won’t have to worry about feeling the seams, the wrinkling, and the bunching of the socks anymore.

Now, not all seamless socks are the same, since some of them are made of better quality than others. Below you can find a selection of the best seamless socks for a child who has six toes.

Getting the correct sock size is crucial. If the socks are too big, they will end up bunching up below your kids’ feet, and if the socks are too short, they will end up cramping your kids’ toes, even if the socks are seamless.

Did you know that getting the correct sock size is just as important as getting the correct shoe size?

When trying to find the correct socks size for your child, please ignore the label the reads “sock size” or “age guidelines”.

To find your child’s correct sock size you must always look under the label “shoe size” in the socks tags. This is the most effective way to find your child’s correct sock size. Take a look at the image below for clarification:

    • Hello Sheets,

Yes, there are definitely certain shoe styles that will fit her but I need to know your daughter’s shoe size (length and width please). After I know her shoe size, I will recommend specific shoe styles that will fit her.

  1. my son was born with 6 toes on one food (5 on the other)- he is only 18mo old and wears a size 6. Everything we have tried gives him blisters on his extra toe. Any recommendations?

  2. My 13 month old son has 6 toes on foot and 5 on the other, the one with 6 toes is wide and the one with 5 is narrow. He wears size 5. What would be the best show for him?

  3. First and foremost thank you for all the wonderful resources! My 19 month old was diagnosed with Great Toe Polydactyly. He’s currently wearing the New Balance 990v4 in 5.5xw and they are working out wonderfully. Can you recommend a sandal for the Spring/Summer season? Thank you!

      • I wanted to follow-up and let you know we decided to go with the Jambu sandal for now and they are working out great. Thank you so much!

      • Hello. My son was born with 6 toes on each foot. And we were recommended some shoes to buy after measuring and sending pics of his feet and got a size larger and they are tiny. We couldn’t even get a bit of his foot in. We also need some sandals. Thank you so much for your advice and help. Can I ask if you have polydactyly please?hope you dont mind sorry. Many thanks Elle 🙂

        • Hi Elle —

I hope you and your family are well. I don’t have polydactyly but I can definitely help your son find the correct pair of shoes. The key is to find shoes with extra depth and rounder toe-boxes, and most likely they will have to be labeled as extra wide (XW).

Before I can send you specific shoe recommendations, I need to know whether your son has narrow, medium, wide, or extra wide feet.
If you are unsure please contact me directly so I can see images of your child’s feet: fittingchildrensshoes@gmail.com

          • Thank you for your response. I can send you pictures but he has extra extra wide feet. He has a full metatarsal on each foot. I have tried Teva and each of the options you recommend further up but all are too tight. He currently has to wear teva when going out but we have to limit the time because they look like they are pushing his toe over more ( the end ones , his little toes slightly cross over the other at the tip) I really do appreciate your help. You hero. So glad there is someone like you out there. Many many thanks, Elle

          • Hi Eleanore,

I really want to help you find shoes that fit your son’s feet and in order to do that taking look at your son’s feet is going to help me determine how wide his feet are and how much room he needs in front of the toes. There is another open toe sandal you can try made by Timberland that fits wider at the front. Just make sure you are ordering the correct size:

            Timberland: Option 1

            I hope this helps.

    • What dress shoes do you recommend for a toddler girl with 6 toes?
Your article has been so helpful to me! I was born with 6 toes on each foot and so was my daughter. Eventhough mine were removed I still have a difficult time finding ones that for me well. I have been looking all over for shoes to fit my daughter well. The closest that worked for her were stride rite sandals and they were a little too tight. I kept cans of food ontop of them to crush it overnight and that seemed to help. Not the best, but it worked.

I am going to get the new balance sneakers that you recommended and seemless socks. I need advice with dress shoes or sandals please.

  4. my grand daughter has six toes on each foot she is 9months old she is 3 1/2 in lenth and
3 wide where can I buy her shoes until she gets the extra toes removed.

    • Hello Mela,

I always recommend having children fitted for shoes at your local kids’ shoe store that you trust. You need to look for shoes that are deep and come with a round toe-box in order to prevent your granddaughter’s toes from overlapping or rubbing against one another or the side of the shoes.

If you don’t have a shoe store in your area that you trust, then take a look at some of the best styles that I recommend:

Shoes to accommodate six toes: Option 1

Shoes to accommodate six toes: Option 2

Please choose the extra wide width option (“XW”)

      I hope this helps.

      I hope this helps!

  5. HI, my 14 mo old son was born with an extra little toe on both of his feet but one foot has an extra metatarsal also so one foot is wider than the other. He is measuring a 5.5 XW currently. I have been working with a local shoe store but they are unable to find anymore shoes that will work for him because the front of his foot is so wide now and the heel is narrow. We have tried Naturino’s and Good Soles in the past. I ordered a New Balance tennis shoe I saw you had recommended to try on him but can you recommend a good summer shoe (a croc or something similar) and a dress shoe? Thank you so much!

    • Hello Haley,

Naturino shoes are too narrow and they are also not deep enough. I am not familiar with the shoe brand Good Soles.

Like I mentioned in the article, the key to fitting a child with six toes is finding a pair of shoes that are labeled as extra wide but that are also deep and with a round toe-box.

The New Balance shoe styles that I recommend in this article are all deep and come with the roundest toe-boxes, but you should consider providing your child with a pair of shoelaces instead of Velcro closure to save the issue with his narrow heels. A pair of shoes that come with shoelaces will push your kids’ heels back, supporting, protecting, and securing them agains the back of the shoe.

Crocs might work because they come with such round toe-boxes, but they don’t provide any support or stability. Here are my recommendations:

Summer Sandal: Option 1 (order size 6)

Summer Sandal: Option 2 (order size 6)

Dress Shoe: Option 1 (not sure how dressy the occasion is)

Dress Shoe: Option 2 (not sure if it will be wide enough but it is one of the widest styles)

      I hope this helps!

  6. Hi, my son is 13months old and has 6 toes on one feet and 5 on other. We live in Croatia.. currently its size 5, we bought Elefanten shoes size 5 wide (they have wide, medium and small).. please recommend trainers, sandals and “elegant” shoes..
    Thank you
    Best regards

  7. Hello, my 9 month old has polydactyly on her right foot & the left is ‘normal’. She’s never worn shoes before. How should I go about looking for the correct size that would be comfortable for both feet. The foot with the extra toe measures at 4 inches heel to toe, 2 inches at the widest point and her instep is little more than an inch. The only different measurement on the left foot is her widest point is 1 3/4 inches.

    • Hello Clarissa,

You need to look for shoes that provide extra depth and rounder toe-boxes, to allow your daughter’s feet to fit deeply inside the shoes and prevent her toes from rubbing against one another or the side of the shoes.

Based on the measurements that you sent me (4 inches), your daughter needs a shoe size 3 in order allow for growing room. The issue is that I can’t tell whether your daughter’s feet are narrow, medium, wide, or extra wide based on the other measurements that you sent me.

In order for me to retrieve your daughter’s foot width you need to follow the instructions on this article:

How to Measure Your Kids’ Foot – 2 Simple Steps to Determine Foot Length and Foot Width

At this stage we need the shoes to be lightweight and flexible to allow for healthy foot development. Before I can send you specific shoe recommendations I need to know your daughter’s foot width.
