Best Shoes for Kids with Six Toes – Extra Deep and Rounder Toe-Boxes
Does your child have an extra toe and you can’t seem to find a single pair of shoes that fit? Children born with six toes face a distinct challenge when it comes to finding suitable footwear. I am going to show you a list of shoes that are designed with extra depth and width to accommodate the additional toe, ensuring comfort and support. Shoes for kids with six toes should also have oversized openings for easy on and off.
Shoes for Six Toes – The Challenges of Finding Shoes That Fit
The process of fitting children with six toes in a pair of shoes is not that much different than that of a child who has five toes, but we must consider the extra room that we need in the shoes for that extra toe. We need to reduce pressure on the toes and prevent them from getting cramped inside the shoes or overlapping with the other toes. I have helped a few children who needed shoes to accommodate their feet with six toes, and I believe I can help your child too.
Key Shoe Features for Kids with Six Toes
You must avoid shoes that come with pointy toe-boxes, as shoes that are too narrow for a child with six toes can lead to several foot issues such as blisters, calluses, ingrown toenails, and corns, just to name a few.
1. Rounded Toe-Boxes: This extra space helps in preventing common issues such as overlapping toes or the rubbing that leads to calluses and blisters.
2. Extra Depth: This feature helps reduce pressure on the top part of your child’s toes and is crucial in preventing pain and discomfort, allowing children to wear their shoes for extended periods without issues.
3. Adjustable Straps or Laces: Shoes with laces or velcro straps allow for a customized fit, and you and your child will have better control of how much pressure you place on the toes.
Wide Shoe Brands for Kids with Six Toes
New Balance tends to be the most consistent shoe brand when it comes to manufacturing shoes that provide extra depth and come with the roundest toe-boxes. This is my go-to shoe brand for children who have really wide feet since it tends to fit the widest feet. Remember that your child’s extra toe will take up extra space inside the shoes.
See Kai Run, Stride Rite, and Ikiki also have certain shoes that provide extra depth, round toe-boxes, and oversized openings for easy on and off.
Best Shoes for Six Toes – Extra Wide and Extra Deep
The shoes below will help ensure that your child’s extra toe is not constricted, which can sometimes lead to circulation issues or discomfort. If the shoes are not available in wide or extra wide widths that means that specific shoe style fits naturally wide. How to Find Out Your Child’s Shoe Size Online
In our digital age, many parents are turning to online shopping for convenience. The convenience of having shoes delivered to your doorstep is unmatched, but it comes with its own set of challenges. However, determining the right shoe size can be challenging without trying them on in person. I created a virtual shoe fitting service that will help you retrieve your child’s shoe size from home.
The Role of Seamless Socks for Kids with Six Toes
It’s important to look for socks that allow extra space for your child’s extra toe. The absence of seams prevents irritation, which is crucial for sensitive feet. Traditional socks may have seams that can rub against the extra toe, causing discomfort or even pain. Seamless socks help allow your child’s toes to spread out comfortably and prevent them from overlapping against one another.
Additional Resources for Children with Six Toes
Finding stylish yet comfortable options for kids with six toes can be tricky. The challenge is to find shoes that are both aesthetically pleasing and accommodating to the unique shape of the child’s foot. Take a look at an additional resource I created if you are looking for a pair of dress shoes to accommodate the shape of your child’s extra toe.
Encourage Barefoot Time
Allow your child to spend time barefoot, especially on safe surfaces like grass or sand. This practice helps strengthen the muscles in their feet and promotes natural development. Barefoot time encourages the natural movement of the feet, which is essential for building strength and flexibility.
Tight shoes can exacerbate pressure points, leading to issues like bunions or calluses over time. Have you found a specific shoe that worked well for your child’s extra toe? Please share your findings below so other parents can benefit from your experiences as well!

Are you currently living in Sri Lanka? There are a couple of white shoes that provide extra depth and are available in wide and extra wide widths to allow extra space for the extra toe, but I am not sure if those shoes are available in Sri Lanka.
Hello! My 12 year old son was born with macrodactyl toes in his left foot only. The two impacted toes are huge and require him to need a shoe with an extra wide toe box. Can you help point us in the best place for basketball and football shoes?
Hello Andrea,
As far as basketball shoes are concerned, I suggest this specific style that has a round toe-box and it’s available in wide widths:
Basketball Shoe (Option 1)
Basketball Shoe (Option 2)
For football cleats there is also one specific style that provides extra depth and round toe-boxes: Football Cleat

Hello,
My nephew has an extra toe and shoes have always been a problem. Please can you help me with buying shoes for him.
Hello Sumaira,
In order for me to recommend specific shoes for your nephew I first need to know whether he has narrow, medium, wide, or extra wide feet. I also need to know from which country you are contacting me to check what specific shoes are available in your area.
If you are unsure of your nephew’s foot shape I suggest that you follow the instructions here: How to Measure Your Kids’ Foot – 2 Simple Steps to Determine Foot Length and Foot Width
Hi Juan,
Thank your for your reply, I live in United Kingdom. His feet are on the extra wide side.
Thanks
Sumaira
Hello Sumaira,
Since you are in the UK, please email me at fittingchildrensshoes@gmail.com so I can send you specific shoe recommendations.
Hello, my 9 month old has polydactyly on her right foot & the left is ‘normal’. She’s never worn shoes before. How should I go about looking for the correct size that would be comfortable for both feet. The foot with the extra toe measures at 4 inches heel to toe, 2 inches at the widest point and her instep is little more than an inch. The only different measurement on the left foot is her widest point is 1 3/4 inches.
Hello Clarissa,
You need to look for shoes that provide extra depth and rounder toe-boxes, to allow your daughter’s feet to fit deeply inside the shoes and prevent her toes from rubbing against one another or the side of the shoes.
Based on the measurements that you sent me (4 inches), your daughter needs a shoe size 3 in order allow for growing room. The issue is that I can’t tell whether your daughter’s feet are narrow, medium, wide, or extra wide based on the other measurements that you sent me.
In order for me to retrieve your daughter’s foot width you need to follow the instructions on this article:
How to Measure Your Kids’ Foot – 2 Simple Steps to Determine Foot Length and Foot Width
At this stage we need the shoes to be lightweight and flexible to allow for healthy foot development. Before I can send you specific shoe recommendations I need to know your daughter’s foot width.
Hi, my son is 13months old and has 6 toes on one feet and 5 on other. We live in Croatia.. currently its size 5, we bought Elefanten shoes size 5 wide (they have wide, medium and small).. please recommend trainers, sandals and “elegant” shoes..
Thank you
Best regards
Hi Eva,
I believe your son can benefit from wearing shoes that provide extra depth and come with rounder toe-boxes. In addition, the shoes should come labeled as extra wide (XW), not wide (W).
Please find below my recommendations:
Trainer: Option 1
Trainer: Option 2
Sandals: Option 1
Dress Shoes: Option 1
Dress Shoes: Option 2
I hope this helps!
HI, my 14 mo old son was born with an extra little toe on both of his feet but one foot has an extra metatarsal also so one foot is wider than the other. He is measuring a 5.5 XW currently. I have been working with a local shoe store but they are unable to find anymore shoes that will work for him because the front of his foot is so wide now and the heel is narrow. We have tried Naturino’s and Good Soles in the past. I ordered a New Balance tennis shoe I saw you had recommended to try on him but can you recommend a good summer shoe (a croc or something similar) and a dress shoe? Thank you so much!
Hello Haley,
Naturino shoes are too narrow and they are also not deep enough. I am not familiar with the shoe brand Good Soles.
Like I mentioned in the article, the key to fitting a child with six toes is finding a pair of shoes that are labeled as extra wide but that are also deep and with a round toe-box.
The New Balance shoe styles that I recommend in this article are all deep and come with the roundest toe-boxes, but you should consider providing your child with a pair of shoelaces instead of Velcro closure to save the issue with his narrow heels. A pair of shoes that come with shoelaces will push your kids’ heels back, supporting, protecting, and securing them agains the back of the shoe.
Crocs might work because they come with such round toe-boxes, but they don’t provide any support or stability. Here are my recommendations:
Summer Sandal: Option 1 (order size 6)
Summer Sandal: Option 2 (order size 6)
Dress Shoe: Option 1 (not sure how dressy the occasion is)
Dress Shoe: Option 2 (not sure if it will be wide enough but it is one of the widest styles)
I hope this helps!
Thank you so so much for the suggestions and good to know about the laces!
You are welcome Haley.
my grand daughter has six toes on each foot she is 9months old she is 3 1/2 in lenth and
3 wide where can I buy her shoes until she gets the extra toes removed.
Hello Mela,
I always recommend having children fitted for shoes at your local kids’ shoe store that you trust. You need to look for shoes that are deep and come with a round toe-box in order to prevent your granddaughter’s toes from overlapping or rubbing against one another or the side of the shoes.
If you don’t have a shoe store in your area that you trust, then take a look at some of the best styles that I recommend:
Shoes to accommodate six toes: Option 1
Shoes to accommodate six toes: Option 2
Please choose the extra wide width option (“XW”)
I hope this helps.
I hope this helps!
First and foremost thank you for all the wonderful resources! My 19 month old was diagnosed with Great Toe Polydactyly. He’s currently wearing the New Balance 990v4 in 5.5xw and they are working out wonderfully. Can you recommend a sandal for the Spring/Summer season? Thank you!
Hello Kelly,
That is a great shoe style since it’s deep, comes with a round toe-box, and its available in extra wide.As far as sandals go, there are two styles I recommend for your boy:
Teva Sandal: Option 1
See Kai Run Sandal: Option 1
I hope this helps!
I wanted to follow-up and let you know we decided to go with the Jambu sandal for now and they are working out great. Thank you so much!
Hello Kelly,
I am glad that the sandals worked out for your boy!
Hello. My son was born with 6 toes on each foot. And we were recommended some shoes to buy after measuring and sending pics of his feet and got a size larger and they are tiny. We couldn’t even get a bit of his foot in. We also need some sandals. Thank you so much for your advice and help. Can I ask if you have polydactyly please?hope you dont mind sorry. Many thanks Elle ?
Hi Elle —
I hope you and your family are well. I don’t have polydactyly but I can definitely help your son find the correct pair of shoes. The key is to find shoes with extra depth and rounder toe-boxes, and most likely they will have to be labeled as extra wide (XW).
Before I can send you specific shoe recommendations, I need to know whether your son has narrow, medium, wide, or extra wide feet.
If you are unsure please contact me directly so I can see images of your child’s feet: fittingchildrensshoes@gmail.com
Thank you for your response. I can send you pictures but he has extra extra wide feet. He has a full metatarsal on each foot. I have tried Teva and each of the options you recommend further up but all are too tight. He currently has to wear teva when going out but we have to limit the time because they look like they are pushing his toe over more ( the end ones , his little toes slightly cross over the other at the tip) I really do appreciate your help. You hero. So glad there is someone like you out there. Many many thanks, Elle
Hi Eleanore,
I really want to help you find shoes that fit your son’s feet and in order to do that taking look at your son’s feet is going to help me determine how wide his feet are and how much room he needs in front of the toes. There is another open toe sandal you can try made by Timberland that fits wider at the front. Just make sure you are ordering the correct size:
Timberland: Option 1
I hope this helps.
What dress shoes do you recommend for a toddler girl with 6 toes?
Your article has been so helpful to me! I was born with 6 toes on each foot and so was my daughter. Eventhough mine were removed I still have a difficult time finding ones that for me well. I have been looking all over for shoes to fit my daughter well. The closest that worked for her were stride rite sandals and they were a little too tight. I kept cans of food ontop of them to crush it overnight and that seemed to help. Not the best, but it worked.
I am going to get the new balance sneakers that you recommended and seemless socks. I need advice with dress shoes or sandals please.
Hi Maya,
I hope you are well and thank you for sharing your own experiences.
As far as dress shoes concern we need to look for the same features that we will look in a sneaker, extra depth and rounder toe-boxes. Before I can send you specific shoe recommendations I need to know whether your daughter has narrow, medium, wide, or extra wide feet. If you are unsure of your daughter’s foot shape I suggest that you take a look at this article:
How to Measure Your Kids Foot – 2 Simple Steps to Determine Foot Length and Foot Width
Once I know your daughter’s exact foot shape I can recommend specific dress shoes and sandals.
She has extra wide feet. The new balance extra wide were not wide enough, I brought them to a shoe maker who stretched them and that seemed to help a little.
Hi Maya,
I hope the shoes end up being wide enough for your daughter’s feet. Which New Balance style did you try?
The shoes I tried for her is
New Balance Kid’s 680 V6 Alternative Closure Running Shoe
There is a wider and deeper style made by New Balance which is the 990V5 series. If you tell me your daughter’s shoe size I can send you specific shoe recommendations.
Thank you for the quick response. She is a size 7. Or 14cm
Is there a way I can send you a picture of her feet?
Her toes isn’t so much the problem. Her bone for her 6th toe is popping out on the side which is causing her pain.
Hi Maya,
You can send images and reply back to my email: fittingchildrensshoes@gmail.com
My 13 month old son has 6 toes on foot and 5 on the other, the one with 6 toes is wide and the one with 5 is narrow. He wears size 5. What would be the best show for him?
Hello Adriana,
We want to look for a deep shoe instead of a wide one to accommodate his wider foot with the six toes, that way the shoes won’t be too wide on his narrower foot.
This is the shoe style I recommend for your son:
Deep Shoes for Kids: Option 1
Deep Shoes for Kids: Option 2
I hope this helps!
My 20 month old S ons right foot is quite wide with the extra baby toe and his left foot is narrow with only 5 toes, I think he is a size 6 but will measure before ordering anything but I was wondering for the NB Kv990v4 would you recommend a regular size 6, a 6 wide or 6x-wide? Also do you have any recommendations for rain boots, snow boots or summer shoes ?
Hello Ama,
I am happy to help but I am going to need more information about your son’s feet. Please follow the instructions on this article:
How to Measure Your Kids’ Foot – 2 Simple Steps to Determine Foot Length and Foot Width
my son was born with 6 toes on one food (5 on the other)- he is only 18mo old and wears a size 6. Everything we have tried gives him blisters on his extra toe. Any recommendations?
Hello Jenny,
Yes, we need a deeper shoe that comes with a very round toe-box. This will prevent his toes from overlapping each other or rubbing against the side of the shoes.
Here are the shoes I recommend:
Option 1
Option 2
I hope this helps!
My new born has 6 toes on one foot &5 on other, what should I do in this case? Are there shoes that will fit her?
Hello Sheets,
Yes, there are definitely certain shoe styles that will fit her but I need to know your daughter’s shoe size (length and width please). After I know her shoe size, I will recommend specific shoe styles that will fit her.
Hi Juan Pablo, I really could use your help. My son has Polysyndactoly of the big toe on one foot (so two big toes fused together) and a regular foot on the other. His foot with the condition is around 2 inches across and his foot is 4 inches long. His other foot is about a centimeter/ a centimeter and a half smaller width wise. However, he is only 11 months old and he gets surgery right after his second birthday in 2024. Please let me know if there is anything you need from me to help!
Hello Camille,
I received your email and responded. To recommend specific shoes for your son I first need to know the country you are contacting me from to check what shoes you might be able to order.
I want to buy shoes for sixtoes for my kid. He’s about 12 year’old

Hello Tank,
Were you able to see the shoes I recommend in the article?
Let me know if you have any other questions.
