Last weekend, I went to Disney World with my sister, aunt, and two cousins. Obviously, we enjoyed ourselves to the fullest and I would go back in a heartbeat! However, I noticed how important it is to wear the right type of shoes to Disney World,(it’s the only way to enjoy your experience to the fullest).
There is a lot of walking involved as well as rides that will give your kids wet feet and put their footwear to the test!
If you are planning a trip to Disney World with your kids, their expectations will be high. Therefore, everything must go perfect. On my visit, however, several issues cropped up because I wasn’t wearing the right type of shoes, and I want to share those with you so that you don’t make the same mistakes.
Let me start by telling you that I have been fitting children’s shoes for the last 10 years, and I know the key role that shoes play in keeping children’s feet and legs healthy.
There will be a lot of walking involved so your child should wear shoes that are supportive, lightweight and flexible, breathable, waterproof, and with good traction.
I will show you which are the best shoes your child should wear to Disney World, but first I want to tell you why I had such a rough experience for not wearing the correct type of shoes.
I wore a pair of Havaianas flip-flops (because I couldn’t find my pair of Keen sandals before heading out), my sister and my aunt wore a pair of Sketchers slip-on shoes (which they claimed, were the most comfortable shoes they had ever worn), and my cousins wore a pair of water-shoes and Crocs.
Here is a snapshot of all of us!
Wearing the Wrong Type of Shoes to Disney World – The Challenges!
The first challenge I faced happened when I was riding the Harry Potter roller coaster. Besides the fact that I was terrified to ride it (it looked pretty intimidating), I didn’t know that the shoes that I was wearing were going to cause such a big problem. While I was up there being turned around in all different ways, I felt like my flip-flops were about to slide off my feet!
I was having a hard time using my big toe to keep the flip-flops on my feet. Right now, it might not sound like a big deal, but when you are up there in the air, trying to enjoy the ride, you don’t want to worry about keeping your flip-flops on! That’s when I started to miss my pair of Keen sandals. This is there reason why I definitely recommend a pair of shoes that come with some sort of closure either Velcro or shoelaces.
The second issue came up when we went on the water rides. My flip-flops kept sliding when they got wet, and it was really hard to walk in them after the ride.
My cousins had issues with their footwear as well. Their heels started slipping out of their shoes once they got wet. Without a velcro strap, their water-shoes didn’t hug their feet properly.
The two people who were the happiest with their shoes were my sister and my aunt. They really loved their Sketchers slip-on shoes, which come with memory foam and are great for walking all day. However, their shoes did take a long time to dry out because memory foam is not meant to get wet.
My point is that we all could have worn better shoes. This did not ruin our experience, but the last thing you want to worry about is being uncomfortable because you are wearing the wrong type of shoes!
If you are planning on going to Disney World and have been wondering what type of shoes you should provide for your child (or for yourself), I will provide you with a selection of the best type of shoes to wear to Disney World!
The Best Shoes for Disney World – ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Have you ever heard of Keen sandals? They are the most popular summer sandal for kids (they take them to summer camp, the beach, swimming pool, you name it!). These sandals are the best type of footwear your kids can wear to Disney World.
Keen sandals provide great support, stability, and they dry fast! They come with velcro and toggle closure, which will secure your kids feet even when they are riding the wildest rides!
Did you know that Keen sandals are the number one choice for summer shoes for children? Parents love how versatile and indestructible these sandals are. Let me emphasize on the word INDESTRUCTIBLE. It doesn’t matter how rough your kids are with their shoes, I can guarantee you that your child will outgrow these sandals before they destroy them!
Here you can find a selection of the best Keen sandals for kids (these styles will fit a child with medium or wide feet):
All of these sandals fit “true to size”,which means that you need a half a size longer of the size that your child measures in the standard shoe measuring scale (Brannock device) in order to allow for growing room.
Please keep in mind that Keen sandals don’t come in half sizes, so if your child measures a shoe size 9, you will have to provide him/her with a shoe size 10 (I know I said you only needed a half a size longer to allow for growing room but keen sandals not available in half sizes so instead of 9 1/2 you will have to provide your child with a size 10).
Does it make sense to you?
If you happen to have a child with narrow or extra wide feet, there are certain styles that will fit the shape of your child’s better and I will describe them below.
Narrow and Extra Wide Sandals for Kids – They Do Exist!
Keen sandals will fit a child who has wide feet, but they WON’T fit a child with extra wide feet. There are two shoe brands that are the best alternatives to Keen sandals. Let’s start with Jambu, (maybe you have already heard of them) a brand that makes the best summer sandals for children who have extra wide feet!
Every time a child with extra wide feet comes to the shoe store that I work for requesting a pair of everyday, supportive water sandals, I suggest Jambu as the go-to shoes. Jambu sandals for kids have the same structure and support that Keen sandals provide, they just fit wider.
What is the best alternative to Keen sandals for a child who has narrow feet? There are two Keen sandal styles that will the shape of your child with narrow feet. One is called the Moxie and the other one is called UNEEK. I describe both of these styles below.
All of the sandals I recommend come with a toggle shoe lace and a velcro strap to secure your kids’ feet. They dry up super-fast and are great for running around all day!
