The Best Soccer Shoes For Toddlers – Is Your Toddler Ready For Soccer Cleats?

Soccer Cleats For Toddlers

Is your toddler ready to start playing soccer? Are you wondering if your toddler needs an actual pair of soccer cleats?

This is a question that the soccer coach might be able to answer, but I strongly believe that any toddler below the age of 5 should wear regular sneakers and not soccer cleats.

Choosing the correct type of shoes for your child to play soccer is essential to the success of your child’s game.

If your toddler is not ready to wear soccer cleats, I will provide you with a selection of the best everyday sneakers (in terms of support and durability), that your toddler will be able to wear around the field when playing soccer. However, if you believe your toddler is ready to wear soccer cleats, I will also provide you with the best soccer shoes for toddlers.

I have been working for a specialized children’s shoe store for over 10 years now, and I know everything that relates to children’s shoes and the way they fit. This is a specialized shoe store that focuses on children with foot and leg problems, but we provide regular shoe fittings as well. We carry some of the most supportive children’s shoes and orthotics, and I am familiar with which shoe brands and which shoe styles are better than others.

I want you to remember one thing: It doesn’t matter how narrow or wide your kids’ feet are, there is always at least one particular shoe style out there that will fit the shape of your child’s feet perfectly, and I will help you find it.

For the last 3 years I have been helping parents find the perfect pair of shoes for their kids online.

The Best Toddler Cleats

It’s important that you provide your toddler with the correct type of soccer shoes (whether they are an actual pair of cleats or everyday sneakers), since when children are playing soccer (or any particular sport), they are stressing their feet and legs at a whole different level.

If  what your toddler needs is a pair of everyday shoes to play soccer, then the shoes must provide the following features:

  • Reinforced toe cap: This feature will prevent the shoes from falling apart.
  • Good traction: This will reduce the likelihood of your toddler from slipping and falling down.
  • Firm heel counter: This feature will provide ankle support and prevent foot injuries.
  • Lightweight and Flexible: This will prevent your toddler’s feet from easily getting tired.

If your coach insists that what your toddler needs is an actual pair of soccer cleats, then the cleats must provide the following features:

  • Firm Heel Counter: This is the back part of the shoe that provides ankle support and prevents injuries. If you are not sure what the heel counter of the shoes is, take a look at the picture below for clarification:

Soccer Cleats With Ankle Support

  • Substantial Sole: This feature will reduce the impact that your toddler’s feet take every time they come in contact with the ground.
  • Lightweight/Flexible: This features will prevent your toddler’s feet and legs from easily getting tired.

The main advantage of providing your toddler with a pair of soccer cleats is that it will help your toddler learn proper form, since if you pay close attention, you will notice how most sneakers have a wedge, while most soccer cleats are flat. Soccer cleats also have a unique shape that corresponds with the shape of a foot and produces a better feeling every time your toddler kicks the ball.

However, my recommendation is that in order for your toddler to be able to start wearing cleats, he or she must be fully stable when walking or running.

I want to clarify one thing, it doesn’t matter how many features a particular shoe style provides, if the shoes are not fitted properly, your child won’t get any of the benefits that the shoes have to offer.

I always recommend parents to take their toddler to their local fitting children’s shoe store that they trust, the issue is that most fitting stores have been closing down and parents need to end up buying their kids’ shoes online. There is nothing wrong with this, but you must know your child’s exact foot size in order to know what size to order.

I created a map that showcases the best fitting children’s shoe stores by state, so I suggest you start by taking a look at that map:

If after looking at that map you still can’t seem to identify a shoe store in your area, then proceed to taking a look at an article along with a video I created that describes the simplest, yet most effective way to figure out your child’s foot size from home:

Making sure that the shoes and cleats fit properly ensures first touches, dribbling, shooting, and simply running are as comfortable and natural as these basics skills should be.

Now that you know what features a soccer cleat must provide and how to figure out your toddler’s foot size from home, let’s take a look at a selection of the best soccer shoes for toddlers.

I want to clarify that I believe that toddlers should not wear a pair of soccer cleats until they are walking and running with confidence.

I only write reviews of shoe styles that I have fitted before, otherwise I wouldn’t know how well-made they are, the amount of support that they provide, and how they fit.

This selection of shoes fit “true to size”, which means that you need to get your children a HALF A SIZE longer of the size that they measure in the Brannock device (foot measuring device) in order to allow for growing room.

This selection of shoes fit “small”, which means that you need to get your children a WHOLE SIZE longer of the size that they measure in the Brannock device (foot measuring device) in order to allow for growing room.
