Is your toddler ready to start playing soccer? Are you wondering if your toddler needs an actual pair of soccer cleats?
This is a question that the soccer coach might be able to answer, but I strongly believe that any toddler below the age of 5 should wear regular sneakers and NOT soccer cleats.
Choosing the correct type of shoes for your child to play soccer is essential to the success of your child’s game.
If your toddler is not ready to wear soccer cleats, I will provide you with a selection of the best every day sneakers (in terms of support and durability), that your toddler will be able to wear around the field when playing soccer.
I have been working for a specialized children’s shoe store fitting shoes and orthotics for the last ten years, where we specialize in children with foot and leg problems, but we provide regular shoe fittings as well. Throughout the years, I have become familiar with the best shoe brands and styles for children with narrow, medium, wide, and extra wide feet.
I want you to remember one thing: It doesn’t matter how narrow or how wide your kids’ feet are, there is at least one particular shoe style out there that will fit the shape of your child’s feet perfectly, and I will HELP YOU find it!
If your toddler needs a pair of soccer cleats/shoes in narrow or wide widths, I will HELP YOU find them!
For the last three years I have been helping parents find the perfect pair of shoes for their kids ONLINE.
It’s important that you provide your toddler with the correct type of soccer shoes (whether they are an actual pair of cleats or every day sneakers), since when we are playing soccer (or any particular sport), we areplacing stress on our feet and legs at a whole different level.
If what your toddler needs is a pair of every day shoes to play soccer, then the shoes must provide the following features:
- Reinforced toe cap: This feature will prevent the shoes from falling apart.
- Good traction: This will prevent your toddler from slipping and falling down.
- Firm heel counter: To provide ankle support and prevent injuries
- Lightweight and flexible: This will prevent your toddler’s feet from easily getting tired.
If your coach insists that what your toddler needs is an actual pair of soccer cleats, then the cleats must provide the following features:
- Firm heel counter: this is the back part of the shoe that provides ankle support and prevents injuries. If you are not sure what the heel counter of the shoes is, take a look at the picture below for clarification:
- Substantial sole: this will reduce the impact that your toddler’s feet take every time they come in contact with the ground.
- Lightweight and flexible: this will prevent your toddler’s feet from easily getting tired.
The advantage of providing your toddler with a pair of soccer cleats is that it will help your toddler learn proper form, since if you pay close attention, you will notice how most sneakers have a wedge, while most soccer cleats are flat. Soccer cleats also have a unique shape that corresponds with the shape of a foot and produces a better feeling every time your toddler kicks the ball! However, my recommendation is that in order for your toddler to be able to start wearing cleats, he or she must be fully stable when walking or running.
I want to clarify one thing, it doesn’t matter how many features a particular shoe style provides, if the shoes are not fitted properly, your child won’t get any of the benefits that the shoes have to offer. What’s even worse, you will end up creating all sort of issues to the feet such as blisters, calluses, and corns.
Before I provide you with a selection of the best soccer shoes for toddlers, I want to make sure that you are providing your toddler with the correct shoe size (this involves providing your child with the correct shoe length and the correct shoe width).
I always recommend that parents take their children to their local children’s shoe store, where a shoe fitter can properly measure their feet and find shoes that FIT. However, if you don’t have a local shoe store in your area that you TRUST, take a look at an article I wrote where I describe the simplest, yet most effective way to figure out your children’s shoe size from home:
Making sure that the shoes and cleats fit properly ensures first touches, dribbling, shooting, and simply running are as comfortable and natural as these basics skills should be.
Now that we know what features a soccer cleat must provide and how to make sure your toddler is wearing the correct shoe size, let’s take a look at a selection of the best soccer shoes for toddlers.
I want to clarify that I believe that toddlers should NOT wear a pair of soccer cleats until they are walking and running with confidence.
