The Best Winter Socks for Kids – Reasonably-Priced, Durable, and Comfortable!

The Best Winter Socks For Kids

Are you looking for a pair of winter socks for your child? It’s important to provide your children with a pair of warm and breathable socks in order to keep your child’s feet healthy during the winter season.

I have been working for a specialized children’s shoe store for the last ten years. We specialize in children with foot and leg problems, but we also provide regular shoe fittings as well. I have fitted thousands of shoes and socks, and I am familiar with which sock brands and which sock styles are better than others.

What do parents look for in their kids’ socks?

Most parents want their kids’ socks to be reasonably-priced, durable, and comfortable for their kids’ feet.

The most common mistake I see parents make is to assume that thicker socks automatically translate into warmer socks for winter. Thicker socks don’t always translate into warmer socks. In fact, thicker socks might lead to your child’s feet sweating excessively inside the shoes and making your child’s  feet damp. Thick socks can also cut off circulation to the toes since they tend to put more pressure on the foot.

Socks play a key role in keeping your kids’ feet healthy, since they act as a barrier between your kids’ feet and the shoes. Socks prevent the formation and the build-up of bacteria inside the shoes.

I will share the secret of which sock materials you need to look for when purchasing your kids’ winter socks. We need socks that will keep your kids’ feet warm, but they need to be breathable as well.

For the last three years, I have been helping parents find their kids’ shoes and socks ONLINE.

The type of material that you want to start getting familiar with is Merino wool. If you provide your child with a pair of socks made of Merino wool, you will keep your kids’ feet warm and comfortable during the winter season. In other words, you won’t have to worry about his or her feet getting cold or sweating so much inside the shoes.

In this article I will provide you with a selection of the best warm and durable kids winter socks! The socks I will describe below will range from crew to over the calf in height to keep the cold bitter air and snow out.

The Best Wool Socks For Kids

These socks will keep your kids’ feet comfortable and warm all day. However, I always explain to parents that their kids won’t get all the benefits that the socks have to offer if they don’t provide them with the correct sock size. A sock that is too small will end up cramping your kids’ toes and making them rub against each other, and a sock that is too long will end up bunching up and making your children uncomfortable. They MUST fit just right!

The same applies to shoes, they can’t be too short, too long, too narrow or too wide, they MUST fit just right (in order to prevent all sort of foot issues).

The socks I will describe in this article are great at keeping your kids’ feet toasty warm, helping resist odors, and keeping their feet dry by moving moisture away at a vapor level.

How to Choose the Best Winter Socks for Children

Let me clarify what do I consider the best winter socks for children:

The best winter socks for kids are made from high-quality, thick material that comes with thermal properties and can also conform to the shape of your kids’ feet.

It’s important for the socks to keep moisture away from your kids’ skin, since this will prevent any painful blisters or nasty odors.

The issue is that there is a myriad of sock options out there to choose from, and it can get quite confusing to decide which style will be better for your child’s feet.

Socks are also available in different lengths: ankle, calf length, and up to the knee. I recommend ankle and calf length socks for every day shoes and knee-length socks for wearing winter boots.

Finding the Correct Sock Size – Get it Right!

When trying to find the correct sock size, socks and shoes go hand to hand. In other words, in order to find the right pair of socks you must know your child’s shoe size.

Do not get confused by looking at the “sock size” or “age guidelines.”  Always look under “shoe size” in the sock tags. Take a look at the two pictures below for clarification.

Kids-Sock-Sizes

The first picture shows a three-sock pack that only seems to show us the “sock size” and the “age” of the child as a guideline of what size to get. However, if you turn the pack around (picture below), you will notice how one of the columns says, “shoe size” (the one marked with a tick). That is the one guideline that you always want to refer to when buying socks for your kid if you want to get the correct sock size

What is the Best Sock Material for Winter Socks?

When looking for a pair of winter socks for your child, you must make sure that they are made of Merino wool.

This material is the best material for keeping your kids’ feet warm and dry, and the higher percentage of wool that is contained in the sock means a higher level of thermal protection.

What are Other Parents Saying About these Socks?

Let’s take a look at what other parents have to say about these sock styles.

“WARM AND COMFY SOCKS FOR MY SON”

Great socks! My son always struggles with cold toes but also “stinky”, sweaty feet. The material in the socks (Wool) make his feet itch, but other socks often leave him with stinky feet. Finally these socks seem to have hit the sweet-spot of not-itching, but not causing sweaty-feet, while still being warm enough.

I am happy because it is really hard to find socks that work well for him at an affordable price, so I am very pleased to have found these. Even if they were higher priced I will keep buying them because it’s been so hard to find a pair of socks that he feels comfortable in.These socks are great and he loves them.

The only downside I found is that they are only ankle-height and I would prefer that they were taller. That is the reason for the 4-star rating instead of  5.

“GREAT, WARM SOCKS FOR KIDS”

My son calls them the “cozy socks”. These socks are extremely soft, super warm, and they come in lovely colors. I love how they are also easy to wash.

The socks fit my three year old son perfectly (he wears a shoe size 8). One downside is how they are slick on hard surfaces and your child might end up slipping and falling.. For the price, these are winners.

“GREAT VALUE, REALLY SOFT AND WARM”.

We have tried these socks in my daughter’s snow and fashion boots and they work perfectly. They are really nice thick and soft socks.

My daughter who hates socks of all kinds reaches out for these when I make her put socks on. She is very sensitive to what socks and shoes she wants to wear, and we buy her seamless socks for her every day shoes (she feels every lump and bump). I was hesitant to purchase her a pair of winter socks but I was shocked when I saw her reaction after putting  these socks on.We will keep buying these socks as long as they are available in her size!

If your child has really sweaty and smelly feet, you should take a look at an article I wrote where I describe the best socks for children with sweaty feet:
