Velcro Basketball Shoes for Kids with Wide Feet

Does your child have a “complicated” foot shape such as wide feet and you can’t seem to find a single pair of velcro basketball shoes in his/her size? Unfortunately, there is a very small selection of velcro basketball shoes for kids with wide feet, but the good news is that I will help you find them. If your child doesn’t know how to tie his or her shoes just yet, then it’s better to provide them with shoes with velcro closure, as running around the basketball court with untied shoelaces can lead to falls and injuries.

Do Shoe Companies Manufacture Basketball Shoes with Velcro Closure?

There are only two shoe brands that manufacture basketball shoes with velcro closure that are capable of fitting children with wide or extra wide feet.

There is one specific velcro basketball shoe made by the shoe company Adidas that is available in wide widths, and another style by Puma which is not available in wide widths but fits naturally wide. I will show you these specific models shortly.

Pro Tip: If you’re pressed for time, you can go straight to the selection of velcro basketball shoes for children with wide feet.

Are Shoes with Laces Better than Shoes with Velcro for Playing Basketball?

Shoes with laces actually provide better support and stability compared to shoes with velcro closure, especially for children who are involved in sports such as basketball. With that said, if your child is not ready to learn how to tie his or her shoes it’s always better to provide them with shoes that have velcro straps, as we don’t want those laces becoming untied during practices and games.

What Makes the Velcro Basketball Shoes that I Recommend Ideal for Wide Feet?

1️⃣ Round toe-boxes help prevent your kids’ toes from overlapping or rubbing against one another or the side of the shoes. Let me show you the difference in toe-boxes between one of the basketball shoes that I recommend and a different style. The basketball shoes in the image below are the same length, but do you notice how the shoe on the right has a much rounder toe-box?

2️⃣ Extra depth allows the child’s feet to sit deeply inside the basketball shoes and prevents the top part of your child’s feet (instep) from rubbing against the top part of the shoes. Basketball shoes don’t come labeled as “extra deep” so the only way to tell whether a basketball shoe can accommodate a high instep is from having fitted that shoe before.

Are You Unsure Whether Your Child Has a High Instep Or Not?

If you don’t know whether your child has a high instep or not I can help you figure it out. I also noticed that some families believe that their children have wide feet when, in fact, they have extra wide feet. I created a free resource to help families who don’t have a local shoe store figure out their child’s exact foot length and shape from home.

These are the only two models that can accommodate children with wide feet. With that said, if you want to access a larger selection of wide basketball shoes for children I also got you covered. Keep in mind that all of the basketball shoes that I recommend in that article are available with laces instead of velcro closure, but you can switch the laces with a toggle lace so your child won’t have to worry about having to tie the shoes.

What Are Toggle Laces?

Toggle shoelaces —also referred as to Lock Laces— are a no-tie lacing system that allows you to replace the laces from your child’s shoes so your child doesn’t have to worry about the shoes becoming untied.
