Wide Shoes for Kids – The Best Shoes for Children with Wide or Extra Wide Feet Reviewed

Does your child have wide feet, and you’re constantly struggling to get their shoes on and off? Do you notice red marks or pressure lines across the top of their feet? If so, their shoes likely aren’t wide enough. While New Balance is a popular choice for wide and extra wide options, many parents wonder if other brands work just as well—or better. As a dedicated children’s shoe fitter, I’ll guide you through the best wide shoes for kids based on years of hands-on experience. A proper fit is essential to prevent discomfort, blisters, and long-term foot problems—let’s find shoes that truly support your child’s feet!
Common Signs that Your Child Has Wide Feet
Sign One: Imprints. After removing your child’s shoes, check for any imprints or red marks on their feet. These marks can suggest that their shoes are too tight and might be causing discomfort. Take

Sign Two: Velcro Straps Not Going All the Way Across. Velcro straps that don’t reach all the way across the shoe could be another sign that the shoe is too narrow. A properly fitting shoe should allow the straps to fasten comfortably and securely.

Sign Three: Small Toes Pressing Against the Side of the Shoes. If your child’s small toes seem cramped or pressed against the sides of their shoes, this is a clear sign that their shoes are too narrow.

My Experience Fitting Shoes for Kids with Wide Feet
As a passionate children’s shoe fitter, I’ve seen firsthand how the right pair of shoes can truly make a difference. Properly fitted shoes not only keep kids comfortable—they play a critical role in healthy foot development. Since children’s feet are still growing and forming, the support they get now can shape their posture, balance, and overall physical health as they grow.
Features to Look for in Wide Shoes for Kids
When searching for wide shoes, there are specific features to prioritize that will provide comfort and support for your child’s feet.
Feature One: Extra Depth. Shoes with extra depth offer a more comfortable fit for wide feet by allowing the foot to sit deeper in the shoe. This reduces pressure on the instep and prevents toe irritation, helping avoid blisters and rubbing against the top front of the shoe.

Feature Two: Round Toe-Boxes. A round toe-box provides ample space for the toes to move freely. This reduces the risk of blisters and other issues associated with narrow shoes. Ensure the toe-box is not only round but also spacious enough to prevent squishing. A well-designed toe-box can prevent foot issues like bunions or hammertoes.

Feature Three: Oversized Openings. Shoes with oversized openings make it easier to put shoes on and take them off. This is especially helpful for children who struggle with tight-fitting shoes.

My Top Shoe Brands for Kids with Wide Feet
Several brands stand out for their commitment to designing shoes for children with wide feet. Here are some of the best options:
1. New Balance: This shoe brand is renowned for its wide size options. Their shoes are designed with durability and comfort in mind, making them an excellent choice for active kids.
2. Tsukihoshi: Known for their lightweight and flexible designs, Tsukihoshi shoes provide the comfort and support needed for children with wide feet. They offer a range of styles that cater to different foot shapes.
3. See Kai Run: See Kai Run offers shoes that are both stylish and functional. Their wide toe-boxes and flexible soles make them ideal for children with wider feet.
4. Ikiki: These shoes are designed with fun in mind. Their adjustable straps and wide fit ensure comfort without sacrificing style. The brand incorporates playful designs and colors that appeal to children, making wearing shoes a fun experience.
5. Stride Rite: Stride Rite has been a trusted name in children’s footwear for decades. They offer a variety of wide-fitting shoes that provide the support growing feet need.
Keep in mind that not all shoes within a brand are created equal—only specific styles are truly suitable for children with wide feet. Don’t assume that just because a brand offers wide options, every shoe will provide the right fit. I’ll help you pinpoint the best styles to ensure your child gets the comfort and support they need.
Most of the shoes I recommend come in wide (W) and extra wide (XW) widths, while others have a naturally wide fit. Disclosure: Some links in this post may be affiliate links, meaning we may earn a small commission (at no extra cost to you) if you make a purchase.

Can Kids’ Feet Get Narrower As They Grow?
Children’s feet grow and change shape rapidly. I’ve seen toddlers with wide or extra wide feet transition to a regular width as they grow, while others continue to need wide shoes well into their teen years. Every child is different—but yes, it’s entirely possible for wide feet to narrow over time.
With the right shoes, you can ensure your child’s comfort and support their foot health as they grow. Remember to measure their feet regularly and choose shoes that provide the space and flexibility they need.
Are new balance 515 trainers ok for a wide foot child is normally a H fitting
Hello,
it depends on whether your child has a high instep or not. In my experience, the 515 model by New Balance can fit children with wide feet but it usually doesn’t fit children with extra wide feet.
Is there anyway you can label what the trainers are that you recommend I’ve seen the pics but the names would be great ? So we know what styles to look for. My son is 13.5H
Hello M,
If you click on the image of the shoe you should be redirected to a new page with the shoe name/style number. With that said, since you are in the United Kingdom, don’t be surprised that the same model is not available there. Most of the shoes that I recommend are available in the United States.
Hi Juan,
We shopped at Shoe Train when our toddlers needed their first shoes. 🙂 We have since moved to Portland, OR, and due to Pandemic supply issues, we’re having a hard time getting the New Balance 680 v6s that both kids have worn for several years… we’re looking at Saucony Cohesion 14s, but can’t get the regular ones- just the trail ones. Are the trail versions constructed with the same support as the regular ones? (they’re now 9 and 7, both with flat feet and overpronations, 7yr is wide as well…)
Thanks for any insight you can offer!
Hello Laura,
That’s awesome, Shoe Train is one of the best children’s shoes stores in the country!
Unfortunately, it’s getting really hard for shoe companies to restock their shoes. To answer your question, the trail version of the Saucony Cohesion does provide the same amount of support as the regular Cohesion style.
If you tell me what shoe sizes you are looking for and your 9 year old foot shape (narrow, medium, wide, extra wide), I am happy to send you specific shoe recommendations.
Horrible time finding little kid, extra wide (3 EW). Not hearing good things about NB quality recently (did they switch manufacturers?). Everyone seems to be either out of stock or nearly out.. are kids shoes caught up in shipping ports? By chance, any hidden places you can share with desperate Mom?
Hello Pam,
Yes, there is a shortage in inventory because of the pandemic situation.
I can help you look but are you looking for a boy or a girl? Do you want shoelaces or velcro closure? Does your child need a shoe size 3 extra wide (XW)?
Any chance you have experience with Altra shoes for kids? They says that they have a toe box for natural shape of kids feet.
Hello,
