Best Shoes for Kids with Wide or Extra Wide Feet
Last Updated: August 2026 | Juan Valenzuela, Certified Children’s Shoe Fitter
Does your child have wide feet, and you’re constantly struggling to get their shoes on and off? Do you notice red marks or pressure lines across the top of their feet? If so, their shoes likely aren’t wide enough. While New Balance is a popular choice for wide and extra wide options, many parents wonder if other brands work just as well — or better. As a certified children’s shoe fitter, I’ll guide you through the best wide shoes for kids based on years of hands-on experience — because a proper fit is essential to prevent discomfort, blisters, and long-term foot problems.
Common Signs Your Child Has Wide Feet
Sign One: Imprints. After removing your child’s shoes, check for imprints or red marks on their feet — a sign the shoes are too tight and may be causing discomfort.

Sign Two: Velcro straps not reaching all the way across. A strap that can’t fasten fully across the shoe usually means the shoe itself is too narrow.

Sign Three: Small toes pressing against the sides of the shoe. A clear, visible sign that the shoe is too narrow for your child’s foot.

Features to Look for in Wide Shoes for Kids
1. Extra depth — lets the foot sit deeper in the shoe, reducing pressure on the instep and preventing toe irritation and rubbing against the front of the shoe.

2. A round toe box — gives toes room to move freely, reducing the risk of blisters and, over time, issues like bunions or hammertoes. Make sure the toe box is roomy as well as round.

3. Oversized openings — make it easier to get shoes on and off, which matters especially for kids who struggle with tight-fitting shoes.

Top Shoe Brands for Kids with Wide Feet
New Balance — renowned for wide sizing, durability, and comfort for active kids.
Tsukihoshi — lightweight, flexible designs across a range of styles for different wide foot shapes.
See Kai Run — stylish and functional, with wide toe boxes and flexible soles.
Ikiki — playful, fun designs with adjustable straps and a genuinely wide fit.
Stride Rite — a long-trusted name offering a solid range of wide-fitting styles.
Keep in mind: not every shoe within a wide-friendly brand is actually wide. Don’t assume a brand’s reputation guarantees the fit of any specific style — I’ll help you pinpoint the right ones below.

Where Kids Most Often Develop Blisters
The pinky toe is one of the first spots to suffer when shoes are too narrow — a common trouble area for painful blisters.

Does Nike Make Wide Shoes for Kids?
Most Nike shoes run narrow, which is a real challenge for wide-footed kids. If your child has their heart set on Nikes anyway, I’ve put together a guide to Nike styles that actually work for wider feet.

Fit matters beyond sneakers too — see my picks for sandals, dress shoes, and boots built specifically for wide feet.
Can Kids’ Feet Get Narrower As They Grow?
Yes, it’s possible. I’ve seen toddlers with wide or extra wide feet transition to a more standard width as they grow, while others continue to need wide shoes well into their teens — every child develops differently. Measure regularly rather than assuming your child’s foot shape today will stay the same.
Hello! I am struggling to for my 6 year old daughter. She has a 17cm long foot by 8cm wide with a deep instep. I have sent back multiple pairs of See Kai Run and Stride Rite. She currently has a pair of Wide New Balance, but she says they are not comfortable. I feel like it’s actually more difficult the older she gets. I am. Looking for a sneaker as well as a dress shoes or boot.
Hello Marla,
I’d be happy to recommend specific shoes for your daughter, but first I just need to know which country you’re contacting me from — that way, I can make sure the options I suggest are actually available for you to order.
Feel free to email me this info at customerservice@fittingchildrenshoes.com and I’ll get back to you with some tailored recommendations.
Are new balance 515 trainers ok for a wide foot child is normally a H fitting
Hello,
it depends on whether your child has a high instep or not. In my experience, the 515 model by New Balance can fit children with wide feet but it usually doesn’t fit children with extra wide feet.
Is there anyway you can label what the trainers are that you recommend I’ve seen the pics but the names would be great ? So we know what styles to look for. My son is 13.5H
Hello M,
If you click on the image of the shoe you should be redirected to a new page with the shoe name/style number. With that said, since you are in the United Kingdom, don’t be surprised that the same model is not available there. Most of the shoes that I recommend are available in the United States.
Hi Juan,
We shopped at Shoe Train when our toddlers needed their first shoes. 🙂 We have since moved to Portland, OR, and due to Pandemic supply issues, we’re having a hard time getting the New Balance 680 v6s that both kids have worn for several years… we’re looking at Saucony Cohesion 14s, but can’t get the regular ones- just the trail ones. Are the trail versions constructed with the same support as the regular ones? (they’re now 9 and 7, both with flat feet and overpronations, 7yr is wide as well…)
Thanks for any insight you can offer!
Hello Laura,
That’s awesome, Shoe Train is one of the best children’s shoes stores in the country!
Unfortunately, it’s getting really hard for shoe companies to restock their shoes. To answer your question, the trail version of the Saucony Cohesion does provide the same amount of support as the regular Cohesion style.
If you tell me what shoe sizes you are looking for and your 9 year old foot shape (narrow, medium, wide, extra wide), I am happy to send you specific shoe recommendations.
Horrible time finding little kid, extra wide (3 EW). Not hearing good things about NB quality recently (did they switch manufacturers?). Everyone seems to be either out of stock or nearly out.. are kids shoes caught up in shipping ports? By chance, any hidden places you can share with desperate Mom?
Hello Pam,
Yes, there is a shortage in inventory because of the pandemic situation.
I can help you look but are you looking for a boy or a girl? Do you want shoelaces or velcro closure? Does your child need a shoe size 3 extra wide (XW)?
Any chance you have experience with Altra shoes for kids? They says that they have a toe box for natural shape of kids feet.
Hello,
Unfortunately I have never fitted Altra shoes before so I am not able to provide any feedback.
