Have you been looking for a pair of wide tap shoes for your girl? Do you feel like you always try several different pairs and you always end up empty handed? Finding a pair of wide tap shoes for girls can be a frustrating and time-consuming experience if you don’t know what shoe styles to look for. I am going to show you a list of the best wide tap shoes for girls based on my many years of shoe fitting experience.
Dancing is a sport that is physically and also mentally exhausting. Your child has the pressure to perform well and also the pressure of remembering the dance sequence and getting all the steps right. The last thing that you want your child to worry about is the shoes feeling uncomfortable.
For your child to be able to perform at her best, you must provide her with the correct type of shoes. This involves not only getting the correct shoe length but getting the correct shoe width as well. It doesn’t matter if you leave a good amount of growth in your child’s shoes, if the shoes are too narrow your child will outgrow the width area first and that means replacing the shoes faster than expected.
My Experience Fitting Children’s Shoes – Over a Decade of Shoe Fitting Experience!
I have been fitting children’s shoes and orthotics for the last 10 years specializing in fitting children with “complicated” foot shapes as well as foot and leg problems, but we provide regular shoe fittings as well. I am familiar with which are the best shoe brands for kids and the best shoe styles among those brands.
When children get involved in a particular sport, they are stressing out their feet and legs at a whole different level.
This is the reason why I always recommend parents take their children to their local shoe store, where a shoe fitter can properly measure their feet and find shoes that fit. However, several parents have contacted me concerned that they don’t have a local shoe store that they trust and always have to end up buying their kids’ shoes online. There is nothing wrong with this, but to order your kids’ shoes online, you must know your child’s exact foot size.
How to Retrieve Your Child’s Exact Foot Length and Shape
There is an article I wrote where I describe the simplest, yet most effective way to figure out your child’s foot size from home:
How to Measure Your Kids’ Foot – 2 Simple Steps to Determine Foot Length and Foot Width
Now that you know how to make sure you provide your child with the correct shoe size, let’s take a look at the best wide tap shoes for girls.
I only review shoes that I have fitted before, as that is the only way for me to tell how well-made the shoes are, the amount of support that they provide, and how they fit. Disclosure: Keep in mind that we may receive commissions when you click our links and make purchases.
You will notice how this tap shoe made by Capezio comes with a rounder toe-box that provides more wiggle room for your kids’ toes and prevents them from rubbing or overlapping against one another.
The Best Wide Tap Shoes for Girls ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
These are the only tap shoes for children that are available in different widths such medium (M) and wide (W) widths.
- Fits medium and wide feet
- Flexible outsole with foam padded footbed and Brushed microfiber lining is moisture absorbent
- Heel measures approximately 1″
- Order this shoe a whole size larger than your child’s foot size
Keep in mind that this is the widest tap shoe you will find for your girl with wide or extra wide feet.
1️⃣ The inner sole of the shoe is made of foam, which provides optimal support for your kids’ feet.
2️⃣ Non-slip pro balance pad added to the resin outsole to smooth out weight transference.
3️⃣ The back of the shoe has no seam lines in lining and an extra piece of black leather to secure the heel and minimize rubbing.
4️⃣ The shoes are very well built and easy to clean.
Another awesome feature I forgot to mention is how this tap shoe comes with a rubber grip at the ball of the foot. Cheaper tap shoes do not have them and your girl will be more likely to slip. Most dance studios recommend this feature too.
Unsure About What Shoe Size You Should Order?
This shoe style fits really short, so to allow for growing room, I highly recommend that parents order this shoe style a whole size larger than their child’s current foot size. This translates to 3/8 of an inch or 0.8 centimeters of space between your child’s longest toe and the end of the shoes. I have fitted this shoe style before so trust me when I tell you to order a size up, you will end up saving a lot of time and money.
My last two important tips are:
1️⃣ Don’t wear them outside: This tap shoe is not meant to be worn outside. This shoe style will be very slippery if your child is walking on tile and the shoe might end up being worn down faster.
2️⃣ Black is the classic color and the one I recommend buying. Your daughter will more than likely be required to wear black shoes for their dance recital.
For tap dancing, the only feature that has the same importance as skill is the quality of the shoes. You need to provide your child with shoes that can tolerate all of the stress that dancing requires without falling apart.
The tap shoes that I recommended are going to support your daughter’s arches, ankles, and tendons by absorbing shock every time her feet become in contact with the ground. The shoe also comes with a firm heel counter and light toe-box for support, snug fit, and comfort!
The type of tap shoes that you decide to provide to your girl play a key role in keeping her feet healthy and allowing her to perform at her best.
Several parents have mentioned how they love the lace that this tap shoe comes with, and if you want to change the ribbon color for dance recitals to match your girl costumes it’s an option you have. The best part is that they have an elastic under the bow so the shoe will stay on regardless of if it stays tied or not. Parents love this feature!
Socks or No Socks with Tap Shoes?
Did you know that socks play a key role in keeping your kids’ feet healthy? They act as a barrier between your kids’ feet and the shoes, preventing the buildup of bacteria inside the shoes as well as the formation of blisters. While this particular shoe style is well-padded and provides great cushion to your kids’ feet, the correct type of socks will add an extra layer of cushion and prevent the formation of blisters from the constant rubbing of the feet against the shoes.
I always recommend children wear socks with their tap shoes. If you don’t want blisters or your kids’ shoes developing a smell, have them always wear socks with their shoes. However, ask them what feels best for them as it’s all about comfort when they are at dance class.
These types of socks are made of the same material as tights and they come with the perfect thickness for dancing.
Now that you know which are the best wide tap shoes for girls, and which socks help keep their feet healthy, you are ready to make the most informed decision. I always explain to parents that it doesn’t matter how narrow or wide their kids’ feet are, there is always at least one particular shoe style out there that will fit the shape of their kids’ feet perfectly and I will help you find them. Have you tried this particular tap shoe style for your girl? Do you happen to have a children’s shoe store in your area that you trust? I get contacted by parents daily asking me if I know about a good-fitting children’s shoe store in their area. If you happen to have one, please let us know in the comments section below so other parents can benefit from your experiences.
Thank you so much for this very important article! Do you know if they make wide tap shoes for boys?
Hello Britney,
I will be writing an article about tap shoes for boys shortly and I will let you know when it’s posted. In the meantime, this is the tap shoe style I have found to be most suitable for boys with wide or extra wide feet:
Tap Shoe for Boys with Wide Feet
I hope this clarifies!
Hello Juan Pablo! Thank you for your article. I ordered the shoes you mention here on Amazon wide size (W) and my daughter couldn’t even get her foot in the shoe–still too narrow! You mentioned this shoe is sold extra wide as well but Amazon doesn’t carry that. Any ideas? My daughter is already enrolled in a dance class and will be starting class today with no tap shoes since I certainly wasn’t going to stuff her poor little feet into shoes that are much too narrow =(. I don’t want her to not be in a dance class just because I can’t find shoes that will fit her but I also don’t want her to be doing tap dancing with just socks on!
Hello Stephanie,
The issue with tap shoes is that most of their styles run narrow, but I am wondering if you are providing her with the correct shoe size. Did you check that her toes are not all the way in at the front of the shoe? Remember that we don’t want the shoes to be too long, but we do need some growing room at the front. Check the same shoe style but a half a size longer and see if that makes a difference.
Does your daughter has a high instep?
Thank you for writing this article! However, I can’t find the name of the tap shoe, or where to purchase them? Am I just missing it? Thanks!
Hello Deja,
If you click on the image of the tap shoe in the article you will be redirected to where to purchase it from. I attached an image of where you need to click for clarification:
