Some AFOs can accommodate a dress shoe for a few hours at a special occasion; others cannot be safely worn in anything other than a specifically designed adaptive shoe. This is not a question a shoe fitter can answer — it depends on your child’s brace profile and the condition being treated.

Why Your Child’s AFO Profile Matters
Not all AFOs are the same — and the same dress shoe won’t work for every AFO profile. Two things about your child’s specific AFO determine which shoes will work:
The footplate length. The footplate is the rigid base of the AFO that sits inside the shoe. The shoe needs to be sized from the end of the footplate — not from your child’s bare foot measurement. I recommend sizing one full size up from the end of the footplate as a starting point, then confirming fit with the AFO in place before the event.
The height of the AFO above the ankle. A low-profile AFO (ending just above the ankle bone) can fit in most of the styles below. A taller AFO that extends further up the leg requires a boot-style or high-top shoe with a larger opening — a standard Mary Jane or oxford will not accommodate it regardless of width.
Three Non-Negotiable Features for AFO-Compatible Dress Shoes
Extra depth above the footbed. This is the most critical feature. The AFO adds significant height to the foot inside the shoe — the shoe needs enough vertical clearance that the foot isn’t jammed against the upper. Oversized openings. A standard dress shoe opening is too narrow for an AFO-clad foot to enter cleanly. How to Confirm the Fit Before the Event
