Best Dress Shoes for Kids with High Insteps: Deep and Stylish
Dress Shoes · Written by Juan Valenzuela, Certified Children’s Shoe Fitter · Updated June 2026
Dress shoes for children with high insteps present a specific challenge that most shoe shopping advice doesn’t address: a dress shoe can be the right length, the right color, and the right style — and still be completely unwearable because the instep clearance is too shallow. The strap won’t close. The shoe won’t go on without a fight. And if it does go on, it leaves a red line across the top of the foot by the end of the event.
I’ve been fitting children’s shoes for over a decade and have helped hundreds of families find dress shoes that actually work for high insteps. The key isn’t finding a shoe with good reviews — it’s knowing which specific styles have enough internal depth for a high-instep foot. Below I’ll explain what to look for and share the styles I return to most often, organized by the occasion you’re buying for.
What a High Instep Actually Means for Dress Shoe Fitting
The instep is the top part of the foot — the bridge between the toes and the ankle. A high instep means there’s more foot volume in this area than a standard shoe is designed to accommodate.

Standard dress shoes are built with relatively shallow internal clearance — the upper sits close to the footbed because this creates a sleeker silhouette. For a child with a high instep, this shallow construction means the upper presses directly against the top of the foot. The strap that’s supposed to close across the instep either won’t reach or sits so tight it leaves marks within minutes.
The solution is not a larger size. Sizing up adds length but not depth — the foot slides forward, the toes get cramped, and the instep problem remains. The correct solution is a dress shoe with genuine extra depth above the footbed.
Two Signs the Dress Shoe Doesn’t Have Enough Depth
The shoe won’t close on the loosest setting. If the Velcro or buckle is maxed out before the shoe is snug, the internal clearance is too shallow for your child’s foot volume — not a sizing issue.

Red marks or indentations on the top of the foot. When you remove the shoe after wearing and see a pressure line across the instep, the upper was sitting on the foot rather than above it.

What to Look for in a Dress Shoe for High Insteps
Extra depth above the footbed. Look inside the shoe and compare it side-by-side with a standard style — you should see visible clearance between the footbed and the upper. Shoes with removable insoles are particularly useful since removing the insole adds meaningful extra depth.

An oversized opening. Even a deep shoe won’t work if the opening is too narrow for a high-instep foot to drop in cleanly. Look for wide Velcro closures that open the shoe fully, or lace-up styles where the tongue can be pulled back completely.

Wide width if your child also has wide feet. High insteps and wide feet frequently occur together. If your child has both, choose a style available in wide (W) widths — I’ve noted width options for each listing below.
Important Note Before You Order
Dress shoes will never feel as soft and flexible as sneakers. No matter how well-made, dress shoes are naturally stiffer — the construction that makes them look polished also makes them less immediately comfortable than athletic shoes. Setting this expectation with your child before wearing helps avoid the “these shoes hurt” reaction that’s really just unfamiliarity with dress shoe construction.
