Or it goes on, but by the time the photos are taken the toddler is pulling at the shoe and refusing to walk.
High insteps are particularly common in toddlers because young children’s feet are naturally chubbier and more voluminous than older kids’ feet. The same toddler who fits into a standard sneaker for daily play may need significantly more depth in a dress shoe, because dress shoes are built with shallower construction than athletic shoes by design.

What Does a High Instep Look Like in a Toddler?
The instep is the top part of the foot — the raised area that runs from the toes toward the ankle. A high instep means there’s significantly more foot volume in this area than a standard shoe is designed to accommodate.
In toddlers specifically, this often shows up as a “chubby foot” or “thick foot” — the foot looks proportionally rounder and fuller across the top than a standard toddler foot. This extra volume needs vertical clearance inside the shoe, which is why depth matters as much as width.
Why Toddler High Instep Fitting Is Harder Than Older Kids
Older children can tell you where the shoe hurts. Toddlers can’t — they express discomfort by refusing to walk, pulling at the shoe, crying when you try to put it on, or wanting to be carried. By the time the photos are taken at a baptism or wedding and the toddler is miserable, there’s no time to find a replacement.
Three things make this age group harder to fit than older children:
Toddler feet are naturally chubbier. The fat padding on young feet creates more volume than the same shoe size on a five-year-old, making the high instep more pronounced even when the length is correct.
Dress shoes are stiffer than sneakers. Unlike a flexible athletic shoe that gives slightly, a leather dress shoe upper doesn’t flex to accommodate extra instep volume — it presses directly against the foot.
Special occasions don’t allow for returns. A school shoe that blisters during the first week can be exchanged. A dress shoe that causes problems at a First Communion cannot.
Three Signs Your Toddler’s Dress Shoes Have a High Instep Problem
The strap or Velcro won’t close on the loosest setting. If the closure maxes out before the shoe is snug, the shoe doesn’t have enough depth for the instep volume — this is a depth problem, not a width problem.
Red marks or imprints appear on the top of the foot after wearing. When you remove the dress shoe and see a line or pressure mark across the instep, the upper was sitting on the foot rather than above it.
The toddler keeps pulling at the shoe or refuses to walk. Young children can’t say “the top of my foot hurts” — they express it by removing the shoe. Consistent refusal during what should be a brief event is almost always a depth problem.
What to Look for in a Dress Shoe for a Toddler with a High Instep
Extra depth above the footbed. Look inside the shoe and compare — you should see visible clearance between the footbed and the inside of the upper when looking at the shoe from the front. An oversized opening. A deep shoe that still has a narrow entry point requires forcing a high-instep foot in. Look for dress shoes with wide Velcro closures that open the shoe fully, or hook-and-loop designs where the entire top of the shoe opens for entry.
Adjustable straps. The closure needs enough strap length to close over a higher-volume instep. A fixed-length strap or a very short Velcro tab won’t close over a high instep even if the shoe’s depth is adequate.

How to Confirm the Fit Before the Event
Don’t wait until the event to discover the shoes don’t fit. Put them on your toddler at home at least a week before — here’s what to check:
The strap or lace should close in the middle of its adjustment range. Not maxed out (too shallow) and not at the loosest setting (too big). If it closes on the tightest setting, the shoe is too shallow for your toddler’s instep.
