Are you having a hard time finding a pair of snow boots to fit the shape of your toddler’s narrow feet? Do you feel like every single snow boot style that you try for your toddler gaps too much around the calves and there is too much extra material in the front of the boots?

Most shoe companies don’t manufacture toddler’s shoes in narrow widths for the simple fact that most toddlers have medium, wide or extra wide feet.

Most parents end up wasting a lot of time and money trying different shoe styles for their toddlers with narrow feet and having to return them all.

When it comes to snow boots, there are only a few styles that are capable of accommodating the shape of toddlers with narrow feet. By a few styles I mean that there are 3 to 4 snow boot styles capable of accommodating toddlers with narrow feet. The good news is that I know exactly which styles these are from having fitted them before.

I review children’s shoes and rate them based on my experience of having fitted children’s shoes for the last 10 years. I have been working for a specialized children’s shoe store that focuses on children with foot and leg problems, but we provide regular shoe fittings as well.

I have helped hundreds of parents from all over the world find the perfect pair of shoes for their toddlers, and I want to help your toddler as well. You are in good hands because I truly believe that shoes can be life changing and I will make sure that your toddler ends up wearing the correct shoe style in the correct shoe size.

If you provide your toddler with a pair of snow boots that are too wide, there will be too much foot movement inside the boots, and that constant friction and rubbing can lead to several foot issues such as blisters, calluses, and corns.

There are 2 simple ways you can check if the boots that your toddler is wearing are too wide:

✅ First Step: Check if there is too much extra space around your child’s ankles. I shouldn’t be able to comfortably slide more than one finger around that area. Do you notice how I can fit three of my fingers in there?

✅ Second Step: Check if there is too much extra material in the front of the boots.

I always recommend parents to take their toddlers to their local shoe store to be fitted for shoes, so let’s start by making sure that you don’t have a good fitting children’s shoe store in your area. While most specialized children’s shoe stores have been closing down, there are still certain stores that do a great job fitting children’s shoes. I created a map that showcases the best fitting children’s shoes stores by state:

Most snow boots tend to be very heavy and clunky, but the ones that I will describe shortly are actually lightweight and flexible.

We also need to make sure that the snow boots are fully waterproof and insulated, since we need to keep your toddlers’ feet warm and dry.

Snow Boots for Toddlers – The 5 Most Important Features!

Before you order a pair of snow boots for your toddler, you need to make sure that you know your toddler’s exact foot size. You already figured out that your toddler has narrow feet, but are you 100% of your toddler’s foot length?

How to Determine if Your Child has Outgrown their Shoes? – 2 Simple Steps!

One of the most common questions that parents ask me is: What is the correct amount of growing room that we need to provide inside the boots in order for out toddler to be able to wear them for the whole winter season? Let’s find out!

How Much Growing Room Should you Provide for Your Toddler?

As a rule of thumb, I always recommend parents to provide their toddlers with 0.3 inches or 0.7 centimeters of space between the toddler’s longest toe and the end of the shoes, which usually translates to a shoe that is a half a size to a whole size bigger. Please keep in mind that your toddler’s longest toe doesn’t necessarily needs to be the big toe, it can be the second or even the third toe.

Snow boots are not available in half sizes, they are available in whole sizes only. Let me provide you with a couple of examples that will help you identify which snow boot size to get:

  • If your toddler measures a foot size 5, then I recommend providing your toddler with a snow boot size 6.
  • If your toddler measures a foot size 5 ½, then I recommend providing your toddler with a snow boot size 7.

What Are Other Families Saying About These Snow Boots?

Before you leave, I wanted to remind you that the type of socks that you provide for your toddler play a key role in keeping your toddler’s feet healthy.

Winter Socks for Toddlers – Merino Wool!

The socks that you choose are going to act as a barrier between your toddler’s feet and the snow boots. The correct type of socks help prevent the formation and buildup of bacteria inside the boots.

I always recommend socks made out of Merino wool. Keep in mind that the type of fabric used is a key element to consider when buying warm socks for your toddler.

The comfort level and the durability that the socks provide are determined by the material and construction of the socks. I have made things easier for you and compiled a selection of the best winter socks for toddlers:

I mentioned before about the importance of providing children with the correct shoe size, and the same applies with socks. It can be a little tricky to figure out what is the correct sock size to order, so if you have any doubts please do not hesitate to contact me. Socks that are too long will bunch up below your kids’ feet and cause discomfort, while socks that are too short will cramp your kids’ toes together and make them rub against each other.
