Do your toddler’s snow boots slip off in the snow, or flop around when they walk? Most toddler snow boots are made roomy, which is great for chubby feet but leaves narrow feet sliding around inside. As a certified children’s shoe fitter with over 10 years of experience, I’ll show you what to look for, how to stop heel slippage, and the snow boots I recommend for toddlers with narrow feet.

Why Narrow Feet Slip in Snow Boots

When a boot is too wide, a narrow foot slides side to side and the heel lifts out with every step. In deep snow, toddlers often walk right out of their boots. Extra room also makes little ones trip and leaves cold air pockets around their feet.

What to Look for in Snow Boots for Narrow Feet

A Narrow Platform

The platform is the base of the boot. A narrower base keeps the foot centered so it doesn’t slide around.

Adjustable Straps

Velcro straps, especially one across the top of the foot and one at the ankle or calf, let you snug the boot around a narrow foot and hold the heel in place.

Waterproof and Insulated

Look for “waterproof” and “insulated” on the label or tag, so feet stay warm and dry in the snow.

Good Traction

How to Check If Your Toddler’s Boots Are Too Wide

1. Check the ankle. With the boot on and fastened, look for a gap around the ankle or calf. A big gap means the boot will slip.

2. Pinch the front. Gently pinch the sides of the boot over the widest part of the foot. If you can grab a lot of extra material, it’s too wide.

How to Stop Heel Slippage in Snow Boots

  • Tighten the straps closest to the ankle first. That pulls the heel back into the boot.
  • Add a tongue pad. An adhesive tongue pad under the tongue fills extra space over the top of the foot and pushes the heel back. It’s the most effective fix I use for narrow feet.
  • Use warm, slightly thicker socks. They fill a little extra room.
  • Don’t size up too much. A boot that’s too long also feels too wide.

How to Get the Right Size

  • Order the next whole size up from your toddler’s current foot size. Most snow boots come in whole sizes only, so if your toddler measures a 6 or 6½, order a 7. That gives about a third of an inch of growing room.
  • Don’t go bigger than that. For narrow feet, extra length makes the heel slip even more.
  • Try them on with winter socks.

Choose the Right Winter Socks

Choose wool or moisture-wicking synthetic socks, not cotton. Cotton holds sweat, and damp feet get cold fast. Make sure the socks fit by shoe size. Socks that are too big bunch up and rub, and socks that are too small squeeze the toes. See my picks for winter socks for kids.
