Want your toddler to match your boots, or need a pair for a special occasion? Cowboy boots are adorable on little feet, but most toddler styles have pointed toes and narrow openings, so they’re hard to get on and pinch chubby feet. As a certified children’s shoe fitter with over 10 years of experience, I look for toddler cowboy boots with a round or broad square toe, extra depth, and an easy opening. Here’s what to look for and the boots I recommend.
Are Cowboy Boots Safe for Toddlers?
Yes, as long as your toddler is walking confidently and the boots fit their foot shape. Keep two things in mind:
- Cowboy boots don’t give as much support as sneakers. I recommend limiting them to about 3 to 4 hours a day, and saving sneakers for active play.
- Avoid pointed toes. They squeeze little toes together, which leads to blisters and red marks.
Why Toddlers Need Roomy Boots
In my fittings, most toddlers have wide feet, often from baby fat that slims down as they grow. Some kids’ feet stay wide, though. Either way, most cowboy boots are made narrow, so the key is choosing styles that are roomy to begin with.
What to Look for in Toddler Cowboy Boots
A Round or Broad Square Toe
A roomy toe box lets little toes spread out instead of being squeezed together. Avoid pointed toes.
Extra Depth
More room from top to bottom keeps a chubby foot or high instep from rubbing against the top of the boot.
An Easy Opening
A side zipper, Velcro strap, or oversized opening makes it much easier to get the boots on a wiggly toddler.
A Wider Calf
If your toddler has chubby legs, a wider shaft slides on without a struggle.
How to Tell If Your Toddler’s Boots Are Too Narrow
- They’re a struggle to get on and off. That’s usually the first sign.
- Do the finger check. Slide your finger along the widest part of the boot while your toddler stands. If you feel a bump, that’s likely the pinky toe being squished against the side.
- Check for red marks on the sides or top of the foot after taking the boots off.

Are Toddler Cowboy Boots Durable?
Yes. Your toddler will likely outgrow them long before they wear out. On average, toddlers outgrow their shoes every 3½ to 4 months, so there’s no need to buy the most expensive pair.
Does Your Toddler Have Flat Feet?

How to Get the Right Size
- Order a whole size larger than your toddler’s current foot size. Some toddler cowboy boots only come in whole sizes. If your toddler measures a half size, round up to the next whole size.
- Have your toddler walk around in them. The fit should be snug but not tight, with no pressure points.
- Always wear socks with them. Socks prevent rubbing and blisters.
