Dress Sandals for Kids with Wide Feet – Stylish, Supportive, and Comfortable!

Narrow Shoes For Kids

Are you having a hard time finding a pair of dress sandals for your child with wide or extra wide feet? Do you feel like you try a whole bunch of different styles and always end up empty handed?

Working parents! What sounds worse? Shopping for your dress sandals or shopping for dress sandals for your children with wide or extra wide feet?

Finding a dress sandal for a child with wide or extra wide can be a frustrating and time-consuming experience if you don’t know what particular shoe styles to look for.

The good news is that I know which dress sandals will fit the shape of a child with wide or extra wide feet from actually having fitted them myself, and I will show them to you shortly.

You might be thinking: That’s great… but my child has high instep too!

No worries, these shoe styles will accommodate a child with a high instep as well.

I have been working for a specialized children’s shoe store for over 10 years now, and I know everything that relates to children’s shoes and the way they fit. This is a specialized shoe store that focuses on children with foot and leg problems, but we provide regular shoe fittings as well. I am familiar with the best children’s shoe brands and the best shoe styles among those brands from having fitted them before.

Wide feet in children are common. I have helped a lo of children with wide or extra wide feet find the correct pair of shoes for their feet.

There are a lot of different dress sandals available for children, but not all styles will be suitable for your child with wide or extra wide feet. Besides, some of them are going to provide certain features that will make them a better choice, such as being more supportive, lightweight, flexible, waterproof, durable, and comfortable than others.

Did I forget to mention stylish? While I am no fashion expert, the sandals that I will describe below are very stylish according to most parents that have tried them for their kids, but you will be able to judge for yourself!

Some children have wide or extra wide feet and a high instep, which makes it even harder to find shoes that fit. Do you know what the instep of the foot is? The instep is the top part of the foot, and when it’s high, it makes it really difficult to find shoes that fit.

Here is an image of a child with extra wide feet and a high instep. The arrow is pointing at where the instep of the foot is located:

The dress sandals that I will describe below will also fit the shape of a child with a high instep as well.

Some of the shoe brands that manufacture dress sandals for children with wide feet and that you might want to start getting familiar with are:

  • See Kai Run
  • Frodo
  • Livie & Luca
  • Nina
  • Stride Rite

Did I forget to mention a particular brand that makes high quality and supportive dress sandals for children with wide or extra wide feet? Feel free to let me know in the comments section below.

For the last 3 years I have dedicated myself to helping parents find the perfect pair of shoes for their children online.  However, in order to buy your kids’ shoes online, you must know their exact foot size.

In addition, I always recommend parents to take their kids to be properly fitted for shoes at their local shoe store, where a shoe fitter can measure their feet and find shoes that fit. If you don’t happen to have a children’s shoe store in your area, please start by reading an article along with a video that I created where I describe the simplest, yet most effective way to figure out your child’s foot size from home. Go to the link below:

Do you usually notice red marks around your kids’ feet when you take their sandals off? This is the first sign that the sandals that your child is wearing might be too narrow.

I will show you a selection of the best dress sandals for kids with wide feet shortly, but let me first show you what features these sandals will provide to your child’s feet.

All of the sandals that I will describe below are made out of leather, since this type of material is softer and it molds to the shape of your children’s feet, making them feel more comfortable. Dress sandals made of synthetic materials often feel hard against your kids’ feet.

Please keep in mind that when children don’t feel comfortable in a particular shoe style, they will refuse to wear it, so make sure that the shoes that you provide for your child are always the correct size and made form comfortable, high quality materials.

Dress Sandals for Kids with Wide Feet – 4 Features They Must Provide

Besides fitting the shape of your child’s wide feet perfectly, these dress sandals will provide the following features in order to keep your kids’ feet and legs healthy:

  • Support: This feature will attenuate the impact that your kids’ feet and legs take every time they come in contact with the ground, allowing your child to be able to wear these sandals for longer periods of time (I still recommend your child switching to a pair of sneakers throughout the day).
  • Lightweight and Flexible: These two features will prevent your kid’s feet and legs from easily getting tired. Besides, depending on the age of your child, he/she might not have the strength to bend a harder sole.
  • High-quality materials: The sandals I will describe below are all made out of leather, which will keep your kids’ feet healthy and comfortable. Leather sandals are softer and more comfortable, and leather will also prevent the sandals from developing a smell.
  • Don’t forget that the sandals must be the correct shoe size, or your child won’t get any of the benefits that the sandals have to offer.

Please remember that it doesn’t matter how wide your kids’ feet are, there are dress sandals out there that will accommodate the shape of your child’s feet, and I will help you find them.

Dress Sandals For Girls

Please keep in mind that I only review shoe styles that I have fitted before, since that is the only way for me to tell how well-made the shoes, the amount of support that they provide, and how they fit.

Another awesome feature I forgot to mention is that all of these sandals come with a supportive rubber sole that provides great traction, which will allow your children to walk around and prevent them from slipping.

Please note that most sandals are available in whole sizes only.

All of these dress sandal styles fit “true to size”, which means that you need to provide your children with a “half a size” longer of the size that they measured at the standard foot measuring scale (Brannock device) in order to allow for growing room.

In order to allow your child with growing room there should be 3/8 of an inch of space between your children’s longest toe and the end of the sandals. Keep in mind that certain shoe styles might run short or  long,  and depending on how they run you will need to adjust the size that you get for your children.

For example, if your kids’ feet measure a foot size 4 but the shoes run “short”, then you will need to provide them with a whole size longer instead of a half a size longer shoe (since the shoes run short), so your child will end up getting a shoe size 5 instead of a 4 ½. On the other hand, if the shoes fit “long”, then you will have to provide your child with the same size that he/she measured (since the shoes run long). If the shoes fit “true to size” then you will just go a half a size longer of whatever size your child measured at the foot measuring scale.

  1. I am a 55 year old woman just diagnosed with plantar fasciitis. I often have to buy kids shoes that don’t look grown up enough. Help! I am a size 4 semi-wide (not narrow for sure, but not extra wide). I was buying shows from Naturalizer but they have gotten more expensive and their size 4 shows have gotten more narrow. And did I say that they are expensive! Any suggestions would be helpful. Even the shoes the ortho told me to try like Teva or Hoka don’t come in size 4. I have lived with small feet my whole life; it’s not fun as most shoes start at size 5 for women’s grown-up looking shoes. P.S. I have tried New Balance in the past and they did not work for me. It’s been many years ago now so I don’t remember why they didn’t work. Nike seem to feel the best (in kids) but they don’t have lots of support. Sorry to rant but you seem to be the only person that gets how difficult it is having kids’ sized shoes, being an adult, and having plantar fasciitis (left foot). Lastly, I also have a very high arch.

    • Hello Kathy,

Finding shoes for narrow feet can be a frustrating and time-consuming experience if you don’t know what shoe styles to look for, especially when you are in those particular hard sizes.

      A woman’s shoe size 4 translates to a kids’ shoe size 2 1/2.

Correct me if I am wrong, but it seems like you need a pair of supportive shoes that come with a firm heel counter (for your plantar fasciitis), and the shoes need to be deep as well (to accommodate your high arch).

I know you said that New Balance shoes didn’t work for you, but there are hundreds different styles among that brand and they all fit different. I mention this because there is a particular shoe style made by New Balance (the 990 series), that fit extremely well.

I don’t know how much you are looking to spend but here is how the style looks like, and you might find a previous version for a cheaper price:

New Balance Deep and Supportive Shoe: Option 1

New Balance Deep and Supportive Shoe: Option 2

If you have tried these styles before and they haven’t worked, please get back at me and I can recommend some Asics shoe styles that might work.

      I hope this helps!

    • Hello again,

I forgot to mention one thing. Have you ever tried inserting a tongue pad inside the shoes? They are extremely effective in snugging up the whole shoe and filling any remaining gap around the ankles. A tongue pad is an adhesive backed pad that goes in the tongue of the shoe and pushes your heels against the back of the shoe securing and protecting them. You can learn more about tongue pads here:

  2. Thank you for your article. My daughter is 14 and wears a size 3-4 in kids. Her foots is very wide and her toes are short. She would like to wears wedges or heels of some kind, but we can’t find any shoes that fit her foot that aren’t little girl shoes.
