Extra Wide Boots for Kids – Finding an Extra Wide Boots That Fits!
Have you been looking for a pair of extra wide boots for your child? Do you feel like you try several different styles but you always end up empty-handed? Many busy parents report feeling exasperated and discouraged when shoe-shopping for their kids with extra wide feet. The good news is that I have put together a list of the best extra wide boots for kids based on my many years of shoe fitting experience.
Finding a pair of boots to fit your child’s extra wide feet can be a frustrating and time-consuming experience, especially if your child also has a high instep. I have been fitting children’s shoes and orthotics for the last 10 years working for a specialized children’s shoe store.

What Makes the Boots I Recommend Effective for Kids with Extra Wide Feet?
There are 3 key features that the boots must provide to fit the shape of your child’s extra wide feet:
1️⃣ The boots must provide extra depth: This feature allows your children’s feet to fit deeply inside the boots and prevents the instep of their feet (the top part of the foot), from rubbing against the top part of the boots. Let me show you the difference between a boot that provides extra depth versus one that doesn’t:
2️⃣ The boots must provide a rounder toe-box: This feature helps prevent your kids’ toes from rubbing against the side of the boots or from overlapping one another. Let me show you the difference between a boot that provides a round toe-box versus one that doesn’t:
3️⃣ Oversized Openings for Easy On and Off: This feature makes it easier for parents and children to get their boots on and off. Children with chubby feet have a hard time slipping into snow boots that don’t easily open. You will notice that the boots I recommend open up widely, which makes it easier for children and parents to get the boots on and off.
Even though most boots are the type of footwear that children wear for a couple of hours and only once in a while, it is important to have them fitted properly, since it only takes a couple of wears to develop a foot issue.
Be Careful About Fitting Your Child in Boots that Are Too Narrow
I want you to keep in mind that if you provide your children with extra wide feet with a pair of shoes that are too narrow, you might end up creating all sorts of issues to their feet such as blisters, calluses, and corns. Calluses and corns are extremely hard to get rid of, so it’s important to prevent them.
Walking in a pair of shoes that are too narrow can impact your child’s walking pattern, which will lead children to put pressure on parts of their bodies where they are not supposed to. This can lead to children developing foot, knee, back, and leg pain.
The boot styles that I recommend are mostly waterproof hiking boots that come with a substantial outsole to offer support to your child’s feet and legs. Whether you are looking for a boot for your child to wear on a regular basis or for shorter periods of time, the boot must be supportive, lightweight, and flexible. The boot must also provide good traction since your child might be walking around slippery surfaces.

The See Kai Run and the Tsukihoshi boots are not labeled as wide (W), or extra wide (XW) but I have fitted them before and they fit naturally wide. The Merrell styles are actually labeled as wide (W).
The boots above are all waterproof or water-friendly hiking boots that your child can wear for longer periods of time. If you don’t know your child’s exact foot size you won’t be able to order the correct shoe size online. This brings me to this next question:
Are You 100% Sure of Your Child’s Foot Size? – Get it Right!
I always recommend parents take their children to their local children’s shoe store that they trust, the issue is that most stores have been closing down and parents need to end up buying their kids’ shoes online. There is nothing wrong with this, but you must know your child’s exact foot size to know what size to order.
If after looking at that resource you still can’t seem to identify a shoe store in your area, then proceed to take a look at a different resource I created that describes the simplest, yet most effective way to figure out your child’s foot size from home.
Extra Wide Boots for Kids – The 4 Most Important Features!
In addition to providing extra depth and rounder toe-boxes, the boots that I recommended provide these 4 important features:
1️⃣ Support: Even though your child might not wear these boots for long periods of time, the boots still need to be supportive to minimize the impact that your kids’ feet take every time they come in contact with the ground.
2️⃣ Lightweight and Flexible: While the boots must be supportive, they must also be lightweight and flexible at the same time to prevent your child’s feet and legs from easily getting tired.
3️⃣ Waterproof: This is a very important feature since boots are extremely versatile. They will keep your kids’ feet dry and warm, and your child will be able to use the boots for those rainy days. The only way to tell if a boot is 100% waterproof is by checking if it has a label that reads: “waterproof”. Take a look at the image below for clarification:
4️⃣ Traction: The hiking boot must provide good traction to prevent your child from slipping and falling, especially when walking on slippery surfaces.

Hello. While googling for help in finding my Granddaughter wide boots (maybe lace up work/walking boots) I came across your article. Honestly I teared up a bit. My greatgirl has CMT a neurological disease that manifests in feet that turn in drastically. There’s more of course, the malformed feet make it difficult to fit shoes. When she is not in braces, she wants to be a “regular” kids. Her words, not mine. To me she is not a regular kid, she’s a super kid!!! I relish the idea of finding the work/walk boots for her that will be cool and give her max support. Thank you, whoops, tears again.
Hello Judy,
I am glad you came across my article! Is your granddaughter in physical or occupational therapy? I have heard this can help strengthen her muscles and prevent muscle loss.
What type of brace/orthotic is your granddaughter wearing? Is the brace the that goes all the way up to her knee? The reason I ask is because it will give me a better idea of what shoe might accommodate her feet better.
I need the answer to this question in order to help you better: Will she be wearing her braces when she wears the boots?
All the boots I recommend in this article are supportive, wide, and deep. However, whether they will fit your granddaughter’s feet it will depend on what type of brace she wears. So, we need a pair of good, supportive boots for your granddaughter (in order to prevent her feet from turning in) and they also must be wide or extra wide (in order to accommodate the shape of her feet).
If she won’t be wearing her boots with the braces these are the boots I will recommend for her:
Option 1: Timberland
Option 2: Timberland Tracks
How wide are her feet? If you are comfortable sending me a picture of her feet you can do so to my email, so I get a better idea of how wide the boot needs to be: [email protected]
I hope this helps!
