Keen Boundless Sandal for Kids: Easy On and Off with Orthotics

Sandals · Written by Juan Valenzuela, Certified Children’s Shoe Fitter · Updated June 2026

I recently got my hands on one of the most thoughtfully designed kids’ sandals I’ve fitted in years — the Keen Boundless. If your child has wide feet, a high instep, or needs to wear orthotics with their summer sandals, this sandal was built with exactly those challenges in mind. The back strap opens completely, the footbed is removable, and the whole thing goes on and comes off in seconds — even for kids who dress themselves.

Below I’ll cover everything you need to know: who this sandal works best for, how it fits, orthotic compatibility, sizing, and a few situations where a different sandal might serve your child better.

What Makes the Keen Boundless Different

Most sandals have a fixed heel counter — the back of the sandal is rigid and doesn’t open. This means kids with wide feet or high insteps have to force their foot in from the top, which is uncomfortable and often impossible with orthotics in place.

The Keen Boundless solves this with a Velcro back strap that releases completely, turning the sandal into an open-back slide for entry. Once the foot is in, the strap closes securely around the heel. It’s a simple design change that makes a real difference for families who have spent summers wrestling sandals onto reluctant feet.

Who This Sandal Is For

The Keen Boundless is the right sandal if your child falls into one or more of these categories:

Wide or extra wide feet. The Boundless fits medium, wide, and extra wide feet. The open-back entry means you’re not forcing a wide foot through a fixed heel opening — the sandal simply opens up and closes around the foot.

High instep. Because the back strap releases fully, there’s no need to cram a high-volume foot over a rigid heel collar. The foot drops straight in.

Orthotic users (full-length or 3/4 orthotics). The footbed is removable, which creates the extra depth needed to accommodate an orthotic insert without the foot sitting too high in the sandal. This is covered in detail below.

Kids who dress themselves. The lace-lock bungee closure at the front can be secured and released with one hand. Combined with the back Velcro strap, the entire sandal can be put on and taken off independently by most school-age children.

Active kids and summer camp. The Boundless is water-friendly, machine washable, and built with Keen’s signature durable construction — parents regularly pass Keen sandals down to younger siblings still in great shape after a full summer of use.

Who Should Consider a Different Sandal

The Keen Boundless is not the right fit for every child:

Toddlers under size 8. The Boundless runs in larger sizes — if you’re fitting a very young toddler, check whether your child’s size is available before ordering. For toddlers with wide feet, the Psyclone by Teva is a better starting point.

Children who need SMO or AFO accommodation. The Boundless accommodates full-length and 3/4 orthotics, but not SMOs or AFOs. If your child wears either of those, you’ll need a different shoe entirely — feel free to email me and I’ll point you to the right resource.

Narrow feet. The naturally wide build that makes this sandal great for wide feet means it may not hold securely on a narrow foot even with the straps tightened.

Orthotic Compatibility: What You Need to Know

Finding a summer sandal that accommodates orthotics is one of the hardest fitting challenges families bring to me. Most sandals are too shallow once an orthotic is inserted, which pushes the foot up and causes the straps to press uncomfortably against the instep.

The Keen Boundless handles this better than any other sandal I’ve fitted for orthotic users. The footbed is removable — take it out, place the orthotic in its place, and the foot sits at the correct depth inside the sandal. The back strap then closes securely over whatever foot volume remains.

What fits: Full-length orthotics and 3/4 length orthotics. What doesn’t fit: SMOs and AFOs — the sandal’s design doesn’t have the structural depth or opening size to accommodate these devices.

Sizing Notes

The Keen Boundless comes in whole sizes only. If your child measures between sizes, always go up — a half-size gap is better managed with the adjustable straps than by going down and having a sandal that’s too short. Size a half size up from your child’s current foot length as a starting point, then use the back strap and front bungee to dial in the fit.

If you’re unsure of your child’s current foot length or width, my virtual shoe fitting guide walks you through measuring both at home in two steps.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Keen Boundless come in wide widths?

It’s not labeled in wide widths, but it fits naturally wide and accommodates medium, wide, and extra wide feet, as well as high insteps. The open-back entry makes it particularly forgiving for wider foot shapes.

Can the Keen Boundless fit orthotics?

Yes — full-length and 3/4 length orthotics fit well because the footbed is removable, creating the extra depth needed. SMOs and AFOs are not compatible with this sandal.

How does the Keen Boundless compare to the Keen Newport H2?

The Newport H2 is a closed-toe sandal with a fixed heel — more protective for rough terrain, but harder to get on for wide feet and not compatible with orthotics. The Boundless has an open toe, a fully releasing back strap, and orthotic compatibility, making it more versatile for children with fitting challenges.
