If your child was born with six toes then you should know by now how challenging it is to find the correct pair of shoes!I have been working for a specialized children’s shoe store for over 6 years now, and I have helped children with all different kinds of foot issues, from having flat feet or being knock-kneed, to having six toes on one or both feet.
I have fitted a few children who needed shoes for their foot with six toes. The process of fitting them in a pair of shoes is not that much different than that of a child who has five toes, but we must consider the extra room that we need for that extra toe. We wouldn’t want those toes to get cramped or overlap with each other, which will happen if we fit our children in shoes that are too tight or not wide enough to accommodate for the extra toe. Finding a shoe with a round, wide toe-box, will allow for your kids’ toes to spread out without cramping against one another.
Having six toes on one foot can make it hard to find a pair of shoes that fit. I know the shoes that run deeper and wider to accommodate for that extra toe, and I will describe them in this post!
The first step before you start looking for shoes is to take into consideration the type of socks that your child will need! A pair of seamless socks will be ideal for a child who has an extra toe in his foot, since it will allow for extra room around the toes, preventing them form cramping against one another!
Why Is It Hard To Fit A Child With Six Toes?
The hardest part is knowing which shoes to get! Finding a show with a wide, round toe-box is ideal to make sure your kids’ feet are comfortable and healthy!
Kids’ shoes made by the shoe company New Balance are best for fitting children with wide or extra wide. This is the brand that you probably need for your child, since it tends to fit the widest feet. Remember that your child’s extra toe is taking up extra space inside the shoe.
You must avoid shoes that are too narrow or have pointy toe-boxes! Shoes that are too narrow for a child with six toes will lead to several foot issues such as blisters, calluses, ingrown toenails, and corns, among others.
I will describe the best shoes for a child who has six toes in more detail below, but first, let’s look at the best socks for a child with six toes!
The Best Socks For A Child With Six Toes – Seamless Socks!
Wearing a pair of seamless socks will make a huge difference for a child that has six toes. It will allow extra room in the socks for the toes, without the socks bunching up or being too big. Your child won’t have to worry about feeling the seams, the wrinkling, and the bunching of the socks anymore!
Getting the right sock size is crucial. If the socks are too big, they will end up bunching up behind your kids’ foot, and if the socks are too short, they will end up cramping your kids’ toes, even if the socks are seamless!
Did you know that getting the correct sock size is just as important as getting the correct shoe size for your child? In order to find the right sock size for your child, always look at the tag of the sock where it says “fits shoe size …” to guide yourself when you’re buying socks for your kids! Please don’t guide yourself by the “age of the child”, or the “sock size” as they are often incorrect.
I wrote a post where I describe how to get the correct sock size for your child. You can find that post here:
Now, not all seamless socks are the same, since some of them are made of better quality than others. Below you can find a selection of the best seamless socks for a child who has six toes:
The Best Shoes For Kids’ With Six Toes – The Secret Revealed!
To allow your child to run around and play comfortably in his or her shoes, we need to find shoes with a wide toe-box that allows the sixth toe to have enough space, preventing it from being squeezed against the shoe or the other toes. There are certain shoes that are wider than others, and some shoes even in the same length and width, will have different shaped toe-boxes.
I have been fitting children with wide and extra wide feet for over 6 years, and the brand that seems to work the best for their feet is New Balance. This brand tends to have the widest, roundest toe-boxes!
You may be thinking: What if my child has very narrow feet, will he still need a wider shoe to accommodate for his sixth toe?
Your child may not need a wider shoe if they have very narrow feet, but you must find a shoe with a round toe-box and a deeper end.
In addition to shoes that have a wide toe-box, we must also find a shoe with a deep end. The deeper the shoe, the better! This will guarantee that your child’s foot will fit nicely inside the shoe, and it will prevent any of the toes from rubbing against the top of the shoe.
I always recommend that parents take their children to their kids’ local shoe store to have their shoes properly fitted. However, several parents have contacted me asking me where they can buy their kids’ shoes online, since they don’t have a local shoe store in their area that they trust. If you don’t have a local shoe store in your area and you must purchase your kids’ shoes online, I wrote a post where I describe the best place to buy your kids’ shoes online. You can find that post here:
