Are you looking for an easy shoe that your child can quickly put on and take off? Do you want to give your kids the independence of putting their shoes themselves?
Slip-on shoes are great, and parents love how these easy-on, easy-off sneakers can be worn with everything in your child’s closet from swim trunks to jeans. They are the ideal sneakers for various occasions, including warm weather getaways, walks around the shopping mall, or traveling with your kids and going through security!
I have spoken with numerous parents who agree that buying shoes for kids requires function to be the priority! While slip-on shoes are not meant to be worn as everyday shoes, they are great because they can be worn to many different places and they are easy for kids to put on and take off.
Slip-on shoes are a great addition to your kids’ everyday shoes (But keep in mind that they don’t substitute your kids everyday shoes) since they are great for those days when you are in a rush and have to run out of the house!
It is important to understand that slip-on shoes don’t replace your kids’ everyday sneakers. They are also not meant for running around or for performing any sort of high impact activity, since they don’t provide any support or stability.
While slip-on shoes provide several benefits, they are meant to be worn for only short periods of time. For example, if you were going to the shopping mall, to grab dinner, or to take a short walk, they would be the perfect choice!
The main disadvantage of slip-on shoes is that they are hard to FIT and they won’t fit all types of feet. For example, if your child has a high instep, he or she will have a very hard time fitting in these type of shoes. If you don’t know what the instep of the foot is, then you can’t possibly be getting the correct shoe size for your child. You can learn about the instep of the foot and the best shoes for children with high insteps in a post called:
If your child has narrow or extra wide feet, I would recommend that avoid slip-on shoes. If your child’s feet are too narrow, the shoe will slide out, and if your child’s feet are too wide, the slip-on shoes will pinch their toes! However, if your child has medium or wide feet, you can definitely FIT them in a pair of slip ons!
If your child has wide feet or a high instep, there are only certain type of slip-on shoes that will fit the shape of their foot.
In this post, I describe the best slip-on shoes for children!
What Feet Will Fit In A Slip-On Shoe? – Medium Or Wide Feet!
Before I start digging too much into the bestslip-ons for children, we need to figure out whether your kids’ feet will FIT into slip-on shoes or not.
If your children have narrow or extra wide feet, I would NOT recommend slip-on shoes. Feet that aretoo narrow will keep sliding out of the slip-on shoes, no matter how many tongue pads or inner soles you add to the shoe ( I explain what a tongue pad is below). On the other hand, extra wide feet will be difficult to get inside the slip-on shoes for the simple fact that the shoe doesn’t open any wider.
Children who have high insteps also have a hard time fitting into these type of shoes. Depending on the style, you should be able to fit your child’s high instep inside a slip-on shoe.
In summary, children with medium width or wide width feet will fit into slip-on shoes without a problem.
The main issue that parents have with slip-on shoes is how their kids always seem to outgrow them in a such short period of time. This makes sense, since slip-on shoes must be fitted heel-to-toe (meaning that the end of the foot must be at the end of the shoe, which leaves no growing room). However, there is a way to leave growing room in your kids’ slippers, and I’ll share the secret below!
The Secret For Your Child To Wear Slip-On Shoes Longer!
The first main issue with slip-on shoes is that they won’t fit all type kids’ feet. For example, if your child has a very narrow heel, the slip-on shoes will keep moving up and down around your child’s heel.
The second issue is that we can’t leave any growing room for our kids’ feet to grow into the shoe (this is a big issue for most parents since most children’s feet grow fast as it is). However, there are several tricks you can try to make the shoes FIT and feel better.
I will share the two most popular and effective ways of making slip-on shoes last longer. The first is to insert a tongue-pad inside the shoe under the tongue of the shoe is, which is a great method that will not only prevent your child’s shoe from slipping off the foot, but it will also leave extra growing room for your child to grow into the shoe!
If you don’t know what a tongue pad is, I wrote an article where I describe the best tongue pads for kids’ shoes here:
In the pictures below you can see what a tongue pad looks like and where the tongue pad fits inside the slip-on shoe.
A tongue pad is an adhesive pad that is placed under the tongue of the shoe. It pushes your kids heel back against the end of the shoe, preventing the shoe from slipping off! Take a look at the picture below for clarification!
After your child wears the shoe for over two months, they may start complaining about the shoe feeling too tight. All you have to do is remove the tongue pad and that will open up space for your child to continue wearing the shoe for a couple more months!
This is a proven method that I have tested several times and found that it works! Most parents refuse to purchase a pair of slip-on shoes for their kids because they think that they will outgrow them too quickly, but a tongue pad is all you need to allow your kids to wear their slip-on shoes longer!
The Best Slip-On Shoes For Your Kids – Comfort And Durability!
The best slip-on shoes for kids are the ones that are deep enough to fit a child with a high instep, made out of quality materials, FLEXIBLE, and equipped with a comfortable inner sole (some of them even come with memory foam inside)!
The shoes also must have a durable rubber sole with good traction to make sure that your child doesn’t slip and fall! The substantial sole will also provide support to your child’s feet and legs.
One of the most popular shoe brands that makes some of the best slip-on shoes for children and adults is Sketchers! Their slip-on shoes are not only durable and supportive, but are also some of the most comfortable slip-on shoes in the market right now.

All of these shoe styles fit “true to size”,which means that you need a half a size longer of the size that your child measures in the shoe measuring scale in order to allow for growing room.
Slip-On Shoes For Mom? – Purchase The Kids Version And Save BIG!
I have been working for a children’s shoe store for over 7 years, and through my journey I have helped thousands of children as well as a number of mothers who came to the store looking for shoes for themselves.
You might be confused because I clearly said that I work for a children’s shoe store, so why would women be looking for shoes for themselves?
Just so you know, if you wear a women shoe size 8 ½ or smaller, you will be able to fit in the kids’ version of the shoe which translates to a shoe size of 7. I explain how this shoe translation works in more detail here:
I have fitted several mothers who came to the shoe store looking for slip-on shoes. They love how easy and comfortable they are to wear. So if you are a mom who wears a shoe size 8 ½ or smaller, remember that you can wear the kids version of the shoe (get the same support and comfort) for a much LOWER PRICE!
Keep in mind that you typically will need to order a half or a whole size down from the shoe size you normally wear.
Have you ever provided your child with slip-on shoes? Do you have a particular slip-on shoe style that you recommend? Please share your thoughts and experiences so we can all benefit from them!
