Do you have a toddler with wide feet and can’t seem to find a single pair of good winter boots that fit? Does your toddler also have a high instep and you struggle to get the boots on and off? Toddlers want to stomp in puddles and slide on the ice! Your main goal as a parent is to find a snow boot that is going to keep your toddler’s feet warm, dry, comfortable, and that fits the shape of your toddler’s wide feet perfectly. Let me show you the best winter boots for toddlers with wide feet.
There are a lot of different winter boots out there and finding the perfect one for your toddler’s wide feet can be tricky and time-consuming. I have been contacted by several families with toddlers with wide feet who always seem to have an issue finding winter boots that fit correctly.
If you are in a rush you can go directly to the selection of the best winter boots for toddlers with wide feet.
Do Most Toddlers Have Wide Feet?
Most toddlers tend to have wide or extra wide feet, and if they wear shoes that are too narrow they can develop all sorts of foot issues such as blisters, calluses, and corns.
One of the most common mistakes that I see these families make is to not put a lot of thought or effort into the type of winter boots that they provide for their children as they might wear them once in a while and for very short periods of time. You might want to rethink that. It only takes a couple of wears in the wrong shoe style or the wrong shoe size to develop a foot issue.
Winter boots that are too narrow might cramp your toddlers’ toes and make them overlap against one another or rub against the side of the boots.
Do You Usually Struggle to Get Your Toddler’s Boots On and Off?
If you feel like you always struggle to get your toddler’s shoes on and off, that’s a sign that your toddler might have a high instep in addition to having wide feet. The instep is the top part of the foot, and when it’s high, it makes it more challenging to find shoes that fit. Below you can find an image of a toddler with a high instep:

What Makes the Winter Boots I Recommend Effective for Toddlers with Wide Feet?
There are 3 key features that the winter boots must provide to accommodate the shape of your toddler’s wide feet:
1️⃣ Extra Depth: This feature allows the toddler’s feet to fit deeply inside the boots and prevents the top part of the foot and toes from rubbing against the top part of the boots. Winter boots that provide extra depth are great for toddlers with wide feet and high insteps.

2️⃣ Rounder Toe-Boxes: While it seems like all winter boots come with rounder toe-boxes, certain styles are rounder than others. This feature is going to prevent your toddler’s toes from overlapping one another or the side of the boots.

3️⃣ Wider Openings: This feature helps prevent you from struggling every time you have to put your toddler’s winter boots on.

Parents need to understand that it doesn’t matter how wide their toddler’s feet are, there is always at least one particular shoe style out there that will fit the shape of your toddler’s feet, and I will help you find it! I have helped several families find shoes for their toddlers with wide feet and high insteps.
It doesn’t matter if your toddler is already walking stable or learning how to walk, the winter boots must be lightweight and flexible to help your toddler take those steps with confidence.
The issue is that most winter boots tend to be really heavy and stiff. There is only a small selection of winter boots that are lightweight and flexible and are capable of accommodating the shape of a wide foot at the same time.
You also need to make sure that your toddler’s winter boots are waterproof and not water-resistant. While these two words seem very similar, water-resistant is not the same as waterproof. The main difference is that water-resistant boots are capable of keeping feet dry as long as your toddler doesn’t step on a puddle. Waterproof means that it doesn’t matter how long your toddler leaves his/her foot inside a puddle, water will not get inside the boots. I have made things easier for you since all the winter boots that I recommend are fully waterproof.

What Shoe Size Should You Order?
When it comes to winter boots I usually recommend parents provide their children with a whole size longer instead of a half a size longer. Take a look at the description of the last bullet point below each shoe to find out what shoe size you should order.

Fitting the Boots for the Whole Winter Season – Make Them Last!
Once I am done fitting a pair of winter boots for children parents seem to have one question in common: Are these boots going to fit for the whole season?
I always try to leave enough growing room for the child to wear the boot for the whole winter season. When it comes to fitting the shape of a toddler’s foot, there is a certain amount of growing room that you can leave without compromising your toddler’s stability.
If your toddler measures a foot size 5, then I recommend providing your toddler with a winter boot size 6. If your toddler measures a foot size 5 1/2, then I recommend providing your toddler with a boot size 7. Makes sense?
How to Retrieve Your Toddler’s Exact Foot Length and Width
Not sure what your exact toddler’s foot size is? Take a look at an article I wrote where I describe the simplest yet most effective way to figure out your toddler’s exact shoe size from home.
In that article I help parents determine their child’s exact foot size and whether the child has narrow, medium, wide, or extra wide feet. I also will be able to tell you whether your child has a high instep or not.
Other external factors that are going to determine whether your toddler will be able to wear the boots for the whole winter season.
For example, how many months of winter do you have? I live in Washington DC and we usually get 4 months of winter here. This means that if the correct amount of growing room is provided inside the boots, the toddler is definitely going to be able to wear the boots for the whole season.
Toddler’s feet tend to grow half a size to a whole size between every 3 to 4 months.
If you live in an area where there are more than 5 months of winter, chances are that the winter boots won’t last for the whole season.

Best Toddler Winter Boots – 2 Awesome Additional Features!
1️⃣ Easy On & Easy Off: Do you want to struggle every time you have to put your toddler’s winter boots on? Of course not! The snow boots that I recommend are all slip-ons that come with velcro closure which allows you to open up the boot widely. Trust me there is nothing more frustrating than trying to shove a squirmy foot into a narrow opening boot.
2️⃣ Gripping Soles: When toddlers are playing in the rain or snow they are more likely to slip and fall. The winter boots that I recommend all come with grooved, rubber soles.
I have provided you with the widest winter boots that I have fitted before for toddlers since they provide extra depth, a rounder toe-box, and open up widely.
