Thomas Heel Shoes for Children – Ideal for Kids with Flat Feet or Knock Knees

Has your child’s pediatrician, physical, or occupational therapist suggested that your child wears a pair of Thomas heel shoes? Are you unsure about the purpose of these shoes and where you can get them? Thomas heel shoes can help improve balance, foot posture, and provide additional support, as the heel extends further down the inside arch area of the shoe. They are often recommended for children who have flat feet or knock knees, to give them a little extra support.

The main purpose of such a heel is to correctly distribute the shock load on your child’s feet when walking and running as well as to prevent the foot from turning inwards. The inside part of Thomas heel is longer than the outer part as it hardens the outsole of the shoe under the inside part of the foot.

The goal of providing your child with a pair of Thomas heel shoes is to improve foot posture, walking gait, and allow your child to function normally.

Who Can Benefit from Wearing Shoes with Thomas Heel?

This corrective element is commonly used in the treatment of children who have:

  • Flat feet
  • Knock Knees
  • In-Toeing

Do Shoes Come with Thomas Heel or Do You Need to Buy It Separately?

Most children’s orthopedic shoes already come with a Thomas heel, but you can also visit a specialized local shoe store. Some stores offer shoe modifications, so you can ask if a Thomas heel can be applied to your child’s current shoes.

Keep in mind that your child’s current shoes will have to meet certain criteria to qualify for a Thomas heel. Orthotits generally prefer to apply modifications to shoes that have a 1/4 inch leather outsole and a hard rubber heel.

I have helped several children with foot conditions (flat feet, knock knees, weak ankles) and “complicated” foot shapes (narrow, extra wide) find the perfect pair of shoes for their feet, and I believe I will be able to help your child as well.

The severity of your child’s foot condition determines how effective these shoes will be. Not all flat feet or knock knees are the same, as some might be a lot harder to treat than others.
